From our resident compost champion Allan Brocklebank:
The grass was cut yesterday, the clippings deposited in the compost bin. Mixed with shredded paper to add to the mixed diet required by the micro organisms. I also threw in a handful of compost from one of my other bins to add to the tribe of useful organisms to get things off to a good start. The paper should help prevent that black smelly mess often associated with composting grass clippings on their own.
Keep it mixed u...p and aerated. They may get fed a few tea bags as a treat later. Got to love your living compost bin.
If it’s nice out today I may get round to sieving another load.

Let’s think of new inspiring ways to reduce our waste. If you have an idea, or a problem we could solve, please let us know. From ensuring we get fresh food, to maximising our recycling efforts.

Save and store any bulky waste until the Household Recycling Centres reopen.
Act responsibly and not place items such as DIY waste, garden waste, or recycling into your rubbish collection. This will take up space in the collection vehicles needed for general household rubbish.

From our resident compost champion Allan Brocklebank:
I set out to achieve a few things today; I wanted to show you all it will be worthwhile in the end.
- Test out my new toy... - Empty my big maturing bin so I can aerate two of my others to make room for more new material to ease the pressure on the green collections - Top up my raised bed so I can put my seed potatoes in
I managed to summons the energy to sieve two barrow loads of fresh compost. My new windy handle sieve was much easier than my old one, it took out all the stones, bits of plastic, peach stones and bits of twig and branch that had not decomposed. I was left with some really nice fine stuff to dig in. It had perhaps been on the go for a year or more, but the moral: don’t expect instant results. We can however speed up the process by following the advice based on years of experience and experiment.
If the weather is nice I will probably sieve another darlek bin full and toss the part rotted stuff from another into my big bin aerating and mixing it in the process.
Potatoes going in early this week is my target. And I can hopefully mow the lawn if the weather is fine. Don’t like it too short just yet.

All recycling centres across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have now closed until further notice. The decision to close sites has not been taken lightly but it is essential to encourage residents to stay at home and limit the spread of Coronavirus.
If you were planning to visit a recycling centre, please hold on to the items you were planning to take until they are reopened. During this time, we ask residents to act responsibly and not place items such as DIY waste, excess g...arden waste or excess recycling into their kerbside general rubbish collection. This will take up space in the collection vehicles needed for general household rubbish.

"Start growing some veggies at home. It doesn’t take much, and what you need can be ordered online. It can even be done in a window box, or a couple of pots on the balcony if you don’t have a garden. Think spring onions and tomatoes. When they are ready, pick as you want them, reducing food waste. And it reduces packaging waste too 💚♻️🌱

Make your cupboards last longer. Look at what you have lots of and try using that often. This way you won't end up with a cupboard full of the same thing and feeling like you need to go shopping sooner.
It could be tinned beans, dried oats or frozen veg. Be inventive and ask for and share recipes.

If you have a home composting system, remember you can add cardboard to it, #reducing the pressure on your recycling bin.💚♻️
