About Huntley Film Archives

Film archive with documentary films on most subjects from 1895 to 1980s.

Huntley Film Archives Description

Huntley Film Archives is one of the largest independent film libraries in the UK, with a collection of more than 80, 000 titles.

We are a commercial archive, providing film clips to broadcasters and other production companies. We can currently digitise our films in a variety of ways, our youtube uploads being a mixture of H. D and low res previews of the films, which will be vastly improved upon when transferred to master for broadcast.

John Huntley and his daughter Amanda established the company in 1984, and the archive continues to grow as we discover more hidden gems in the new collections that we represent.

Last week we looked at 9.5mm, today's Huntley Tuesday Tutorial moves on to the iconic amateur gauges of 8mm and Super 8. Many's the time you hear a famous film director recounting their early experience of film making on a Super 8 home movie camera, but what makes Super 8 so super..? Enjoy! https://youtu.be/24LkTDDJKco

It's that time of the week again -Tuesday tutorial from Huntley Film Archives! So far we've covered how to clean your film, get it the right way round and attach leader using a joiner. We have just uncovered a lovely home-made film spool. This 9.5mm spool is cut from a wartime Ministry of Food National Dried Milk tin. Milk powder and films the same storage requirements - a cool, dry place!

We have been invited to submit a bid towards funding for a film scanner. Two days ago we wrote and asked a range of industry professionals: 'Huntley Film Archives has been invited to apply for funding towards the purchase of a film scanner. As part of the process it would be helpful if I could gather comments either for against the proposal as this will make our case to the funder stronger. The scanner is the Vintage Cloud Steenbeck and ownership of the Steenbeck will enable... us to provide clients with 2K or 4K scans and a faster service than we are currently able to. I would be hugely grateful if you could drop me a line in reply saying whether this would help you and that you would be more likely to use an archive providing this facility as this is what the industry now requires.'
We have been completely blown away by the enthusiastic and warm response to our request. Typical of more than 30 replies is this from David Seevers:
'I’m glad to hear that you have the possibility of getting a Vintage Cloud Steenbeck scanner, which will enable you to provide higher quality video files more quickly. I think that will make a substantial difference, for researchers like myself, working on fast-turnaround projects, scrambling to get master material in at the end of an edit. Your archives are undoubtedly first class, and I’m sure that speedier delivery in higher resolution will enable you to keep up with the competition.'
A huge thank you the everyone who is supporting us in our bid. We are an archive that is small in funds, but big in content and hope to be able to share this content more widely soon.
