Hymag Description

The James Hyman Magazine Archive currently houses over 80, 000 magazines, ‘fanzines’, journals, newspapers and ‘little magazines’. * This continuously growing, self-acquired collection contains many publications that cover a substantial time-span to encompass birth, flowering, decay and death over a range of cultural and commercial cycles:

The archive covers complete mini social histories, trends and fashions and the transformation of certain popular titles – for example Heat, which initially began as a film-led entertainment magazine later evolved into a celeb /gossip magazine for women. The historical importance of this collection is invaluable and includes the following categories:

Advertising, Animation, Anthropology, Art, Automobile, Business, Celebrity, Computing, Design, Entertainment, Fashion, Film, Fringe, Humour, Internet, Media, Men's Magazines, Music, Nature /Science, New Age, Paranormal, Philosophy, Politics, Photography, Science Fiction, Sociology, Spirituality, Sport, Technology, Television, Urban, Youth

Who knows whether digital will completely supersede print as a communication medium; whatever the outcome, the archive reflects the durability of the magazine as a history of what has worked or failed for the 2, 500* different publications it houses.

Hyman’s primary mission has been to collect the history of printed popular culture, however the archive is both a collection of artefacts and an artefact in itself as well as a cultural resource. A physical ‘installation’, the collection illustrates the transition of the magazine into a valued artefact that is both threatened and enhanced by the online magazine boom. Hyman’s archive is also a work of art with an aura that any magazine aficionado or culture commentator can recognise, experience and value.

Why all these Magazines?
Well, Simon Reynolds seems to sum it up succintly in this extract from his "Retromania" book (http://amzn. to /mB1wFr):

"Vintage magazines provide the kind of information that's hard to find on the internet owing to the particular way its archiving system is structured. Online, you can uncover a vast amount about an artist in terms of diachronic trajectory
(discography, biographical arc). Much harder to reconstruct is the synchronic context: what was going on at the precise moment in time of a record's release, whether in terms of the genre in which the group operated, the general state of music culture, or the political and social backdrop.

A musty, yellowing 1970s copy of NME, Melody Maker, Creem or Let It Rock is a precious capsule of circumstantial evidence: reviews and features about contemporaneous groups, but also record company adverts and the graphic design and typography, which ooze period vibe.

You can't fully understand the impact of glam rock without a sense of how drab and style-less regular rock groups looked then, of how visually depleted the whole media environment was. Likewise, the stark angular minimalism of post-punk groups and record covers derived its salient edge from juxtaposition with scruffy Old Wave and Stiff-style pub rock.

A time-slice of history, stubbornly analogue, the vintage music magazine in some sense resists the decontextualising vortex that is netculture, that endless end of history that never stops churning. "
