“CHRISTMAS TIME, MISTLETOE & WHINE” 🎅
As we enter the final working week before the Christmas break, festive good-feelings are beginning to wane like a slushy snowball.
You've got a mulled-wine tinged, faux smile. Nothing in the calendar and your boss is wearing a Santa hat and dolling out cheap minced pies. But let’s face it, you're being paid for your hours, and slacking still isn't an option - no matter how festive things feel (or how bad you do).
... So, here’s how to look busy in the final working days before Christmas...
Be the office Grinch...
Have a repertoire of clichéd ‘bah humbug’ catchphrases ready to drop whenever anybody hands out a mince pie or hangs up a piece of tinsel i.e. "I'm allergic to tinsel" / "Dashing through the - no."
Nobody will suspect that you're actually listening to Bublé’s Christmas deluxe album on loop whilst secretly doing a bit of last-minute Xmas shopping online. Hehe.
Fix up, look busy...
The key to looking like you are ‘busy’ is to always be doing something. So scribble or type away furiously.
If you appear to be sitting completely still, it’s pretty obvious that you aren’t working.
Be differently- abled...
When your computer looks sleepy it's not going to look like you're being productive. So disable the sleep mode on your computer and walk away for however long your need. Thanks to your brightly lit screen, you can always pretend that you just popped away for a brief moment.
Call me baby...
Being on the phone, if it’s part of your job is a great way to look busy. If the phone is slow sometimes, dial your desk phone from your mobile and then answer the desk phone. Depending on how good you are at acting, it’s easy to kill 10-15 minutes a few times a day on fake phone calls.
Meeting anyone?
No, not ‘real’ meetings. None of your clients from other companies will want to brave the Christmas shopping crowds or the cold, so it's time to set up some internal meetings ideally with people in the office you like the best. This is a great way to kill time – otherwise known as team-building.
Make sure you have a pen handy - hey, you're still a professional.
Perfect your posture...
If Candy Crush is still your vibe, or you are behind in several lengthy WhatsApp group threads etc – now is the time to catch up - but whatever you do, resist the urge to slouch.
Bad posture makes you look like a sloppy worker, while a straight back will make you seem alert and efficient.
So prop yourself up and stay sitting bolt upright. You may not be getting much work done but in those final days before Christmas, appearances count for an awful lot.
After all – your boss doesn’t want to do any work either at this time of year. So do everyone a favour, and fake it until Christmas.
