Ilfracombe Zoo Park operated from 1949 until 1973 in the grounds of Comyn Hill House (which was sold and became the Golden Coast Holiday Centre). After the zoo closed owner, Charles Trevisick, opened Ilfracombe Tropical Wildife Gardens at Biclescombe Park

Ilfracombe Zoo Description

1955 - The proprietor of Ilfracombe Zoo, C Trevisick, is attacked by a lion when he goes to clean out its cage. 1958 - An 18 year old nurse is mauled by a bear at Ilfracombe Zoo. 1963 - The 'Bitterest Snow-up in Memory' hits the area. Hamlets are isolated for days at a time and six helicopters are brought in to distribute food. Three crocodiles freeze to death at Ilfracombe Zoo. 1973 - Ilfracombe Zoo closes after 25 years of operation.
