Ilkeston St John Ambulance Description

This page was created by our cadets as part of their Grand Prior Award.

We meet at the Arena Christian Centre in Ilkeston on Monday evenings at 6pm. We're a lovely group of like-minded people who are first aid trained. We have a fab group of Cadets who are currently first aid trained and working towards their Grand Prior award as well as a lovely group of Adult first aiders.

We provide first aid cover for really fun duties that range from Ilkeston Football Club home matches to the Coppice Steam Rally and we have a great time doing them! !

So, if you'd like to come and join us, feel free to get in touch or nip in and see us during our class.

A team of brilliant SJA volunteers and their resusci Anne dolls have successfully reached the top of Ben Nevis, raising thousands of pounds to provide life saving defibrillators in their local community.
After scaling the 1,344m mountain, they even performed a four minute round of CPR just to prove that it can be done anywhere - great work, guys!

June (left) was today reunited with her life saver Estelle after the 75-year-old fell unconscious and stopped breathing at an event last month. During that day, Estelle immediately sprung into action to deliver rescue breaths while a doctor gave June chest compressions. The two continued CPR until an ambulance arrived with a defibrillator to restart June’s heart.
Estelle had learned first aid on an SJA Essential First Aid course earlier in the year but only expected to use her skills to treat minor injuries.
We're really pleased to hear June is making a good recovery. She, her husband and family will be forever grateful to Estelle and her first aid skills. Well done Estelle!

Earlier this month, Joel Massey, 14, went into sudden cardiac arrest while playing football. Thankfully for Joel, his friends were able to perform CPR after remembering what they had learned in a lesson in school the year before.
Thankfully, on this occasion, Joel’s friends were able to be the difference between life and death, but had they not been taught first aid at school, the outcome may have been very different.
Here at SJA we believe no one should die from a lack o...f first aid training. Please share if you think first aid lessons should be made more available in schools.

TV weather presenter Sian Lloyd has spoken out today about her battle with chronic hay fever. About one in five people in the UK suffer from the condition, although fortunately most aren’t as badly affected as Sian.
Those who have asthma are most at risk of a more serious reaction, with severe allergies narrowing airways and increasing the risk of an asthma attack.
Clive James, our Training Officer at SJA recommends regularly checking pollen counts and staying on top of medication to keep attacks at bay. If you do feel an attack coming on, keep in mind our advice:

35-year-old Andy Cave experienced every parent’s fear when his young daughter choked on a coin in November 2013. Thankfully Andy had learnt first aid just weeks earlier and was able to save his daughters life using back slaps.
Now he’s urging all other parents to learn the same skills so they can be the difference between life and death.
If you'd like to know what to do in Andy's situation, check out our choking advice. http://www.sja.org.uk/…/fir…/breathin g-problems/choking.aspx

Did you know 7/10 children lack the basic first aid knowledge needed to act in an emergency? Yesterday, we urged Ideal World TV shopping channel viewers to help make a huge difference by texting LIFE to 70800 and donating £5 to help us to equip more young people with the skills to save a life.
Now we’re asking our fans to also make the same pledge to support our work so you can be the difference between life and death too. Thank you!

And they're off! Stephanie Shea, 27, will be one of the 200 people running the Virgin London Marathon on behalf of St John Ambulance today. Her race is part of a year-long challenge to cover 1,000 miles in sporting events. So far she has battled injury and illness to compete in 44 events, covering 850 miles. We think she's an inspiration! Best of luck to Stephanie and all of our runners, raising funds so that SJA can continue to enable people to be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

HRH The Countess of Wessex and TV presenter Tess Daly joined us at our Everyday Heroes awards last night to celebrate the nation’s most inspirational life savers.
Amongst the winners was Simon Underwood who was presented with the prestigious Everyday Hero of the Year award. Simon used CPR to save the life of a 15-month-old child who he found floating in a stream in summer 2013.Well done to him and all the other award winners and finalists!
We are urging everyone to follow these life savers’ lead so you too can be the difference between life and death.

St John Ambulance’s RISE project teaches life saving skills to vulnerable young people who wouldn’t normally have access to training. They learn first aid skills that are most needed in their communities, including treating gun and knife injuries.
Following advice he learnt at RISE, Mickey knew how to help when his friend was stabbed in the kidney. Using a train travelcard he was able to slow the flow of blood until an ambulance arrived and saved this life.
Please donate to St John Ambulance so you can help support more young people like Mickey and be the difference between life and death http://bit.ly/NqViJ4

Fabrice Muamba is campaigning for more to be done to prevent cardiac deaths.
The former footballer is calling for more AEDs to be made available to non-professional football clubs, two years after he suffered a cardiac arrest at White Hart Lane.
People were able to help Fabrice, but at a lower league match it would have been a completely different story.
... If used in the crucial minutes before an ambulance arrives, AEDs double the chances of someone surviving after their heart stops. Yet, access to them remains out of reach for most victims who have a sudden cardiac arrest in public spaces.
Share this post if you think more AEDs should be available at lower league football matches!

Despite first aid skills being simple to learn, fewer than one in five of us know what to do in an emergency.
Our free first aid app has all the essential life saving advice you need for when you’re on the go and has recently been updated with the latest advice following the release of the new First Aid Manual.
