As the summer holidays begin it's the perfect time to put some dancing in the diary for autumn!
In October, we host Algerian born dancer and choreographer Nacera Belaza for a weekend workshop Release - Receive - Become With Nacera Belaza
A self-taught interpreter, Nacera develops a choreography that originates in an inner progress—a sensitive awareness of the body, of space and of the emptiness inside herself.
... As part of the weekend there will also be The Power of Emptiness - Event with Nacera Belaza sharing 30 years of her practice.

Thursday 5 September is our Higher Education Round Table at Independent Dance our annual meeting point for artists working within higher education institutions; a platform for artists to engage with a current issue facing artist teachers in the HE context, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration.
This year's topic will be Agency Under Pressure:how can we influence the network of political relationships that we rely upon? How do we influence institutional management; fu...nders and stakeholders; The Department of Education and our MPs; as well as the young people who need to create a vision for themselves in the dance field?
Decision-makers in institutions and in government often need to speak for dance in languages different to our own. How do we equip them to argue for the value of our work?
Visit our website and download the invitation for more information.

It’s the first Friday of Independent Dance's summer listening series! Throughout July and August we’re revisiting a gem from Crossing Borders 2018, which ran in partnership with Roehampton Dance.
How to begin? Or begin again? How to work with just the right amount of freedom from what has come before and what may well come after? How to take time and timing as material to work with, how to practice without expectation, to find clarity within uncertainty?
Invitation to Begin (...Again), roamed across these ideas, probing and playing with art-making as forms of resistance and resilience; constraint as a creative catalyst. Lucy Cash and Fiona Wright combine talking with doing, offering reflections on their own work and that of others.
Free to listen and download!

As we take a break from classes and workshops until September at Independent Dance, we thought we’d offer you some summer listening inspiration from last year’s Crossing Borders!
Every Friday, we'll highlight a talk from the series for your weekend listening, free to listen to and download.
Presented in partnership with the Roehampton Dance, 2018’s Crossing Borders saw artists and practitioners sharing their process and practice in relation to the notion of making change: how... we acknowledge the past whilst imagining the future.
Enjoy!

Tomorrow is the last day of Karen Nelson's week long intensive at Independent Dance !
Join us from 7-8:30pm tomorrow evening for an inclusive lecture-demonstration-participatory jam event facilitated by Karen, which inquires into the evolution of Contact Improvisation as a living, breathing, changing dance form.
This platform—part ritual, part performance, and part social club—calls on practitioners of CI to share embodied stories centering on intersectionality, passion, iden...tity, and one’s own history in the form.
Screenings of archival video documentation of early CI performance will provide a context and portal for entering this event.

It's our final week of Morning class before we're back in September! Class will be led by Zoë Solomons at Independent Dance 24-28 June 10am – 12pm #ProfessionalClass #ACEsupported
The form of our bodies evolved over millions of years in response to the need to move in our environment. These forms are a map of our movement history and a key to our movement present. In these classes we learn to read the shapes of our bones and tissues and apply our understanding to functional... physicality. Anatomical study leads us into improvised and set movement studies. Exploring our inheritance with animal sensitivity and playful expansivity.
Drop in: £5 per session 10 class card: £40 valid indefinitely, also valid for Monday Night Improvisation

Dear artists, friends, colleagues, collaborators, Thank you all for celebrating ID’s birthday with us on Saturday! And equally a big thank you to all those of you who couldn’t make it, and sent such lovely thoughts.
Thank you to the ever-wonderful ID ambassadors; everyone who generously shared, contributed and performed during the day in small and big ways; Cafe at Jamyang for the fantastic, delicious food; our trustees; and Siobhan Davies Dance's staff for their help with th...e event.
ID has been created and sustained by many people along the way, organising, facilitating, taking part in activities, and we hope we have celebrated all of them in some way, and that you’ll continue to be with us as we move ahead. Onwards!
Your ID team
