'East Asia Political Dynamics in the Asia Pacific Region: North Korea and the Nuclear Dilemma’
Will North Korea completely give up its nuclear weapons programme? Just a year ago the talk was when, not if, the United States and North Korea would go to war. In recent months President Trump and Chairman Kim led a dramatic turnaround in bilateral relations. How was this possible and how durable is the thaw? The paper will discuss the recent improvement in North-South relations. A...s it examines the rationale for North Korea to change course in early 2018, the paper shows that North Korean society is changing although the combination of policies and practices may lead to unintended consequences. Enrichment is a great thing, but it also creates dislocation, new inequalities, differences and ultimately some discontent. Containing and channelling the latter will be a challenge. Next, the paper turns to South Korea, paying attention to both the role of the country’s leadership and public opinion. Lastly, it embeds the analysis in broader regional dynamics.
13th November 2018 from 5-7pm in Harrington Lecture Theatre (HALT). Pizza and beverages Provided!

In this interactive talk Dafydd Fell takes his audience on a journey through Taiwan’s political history from 2000-2016 through the lens of political advertising. This talk is an extension of an earlier lecture that examined how Taiwan’s parties had portrayed political history since 1945. This time though the focus is on the controversial Chen and Ma presidencies. Through content analysis of ten TV advertisements, he will discuss alternative partisan perspectives on this period and the development of multi-party politics after the first change of ruling parties in 2000. When looking at the advertisements he will ask the audience to consider questions such as: What is good political advertising? Can we see a link between political communication and election results? How have Taiwan’s parties and political agenda changed?
