The Spring Festival is the lunar Chinese New year, celebrating from 1st day in the lunar calendar and lasts the 15th day (the full moon). Red is the main colour for the festival, and is believed to be an auspicious colour. Red Chinese lanterns hang in streets; red couplets are pasted on doors. Chinese knots, potted kumquats, and golden orange trees are also common. Chinese children receive something else too—red envelopes. Also called red packets or pockets, they include mon...ey. This money is the fortune transferred from the elders to the kids. In Chinese culture, the lion symbolizes power, wisdom, and superiority. People perform lion dances at Chinese festivals or big occasions to bring good fortune.
DP Grade 11 Chinese Acquisition students showed the 12 zodiac signs; the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
Chinese Acquisition Grade 6-10 performing the TaiChi KungFu Fan dance.
Chinese Mother Tongue performed a traditional Chinese song; ‘Jasmine Flower’ performed by Dayna (piano), Charlotte, Finn, Amaury, Joseph, Jack, and Allen.

What a thrilling week it has been and many thanks to our Mandarin Department for putting on such a wonderful celebration for the start of Chinese new Year. At this morning's assembly, the ISL students learned about Chinese culture and had the opportunity to 'feed' the lion. The Lion's dance is commonly performed during the New Year to bring good luck and drive away evil spirits. Chinese Mother Tongue and Language Acquisition students performed songs and a Thai Chi dance with red fans. The assembly was finalised with a lovely distrubution of fortune cookies and the red envelope, which in Chinese culture is meant to bring good luck. Gong Xi Fa Cai!!

At ISL, we keep a close eye on digital developments, and how best we can support students in leading balanced digital lives.
With information technology set to continue to grow in importance, managing the digital challenges of the present and the future, both individually and collectively, is something that involves all of us.
With this in mind, as part of our PSHE programme, we are having an E-focus day on Wednesday 23 January, in which areas such as responsible digital usage, managing social media and ensuring e-safety will be addressed.

ISL Wax Works!
Grade 6 students created their own wax sculptures based on the renowned work of Henry Moore.
For their final session of last term they created a photomontage of their sculpture which they juxtaposed very cleverly with either a workshop photo (in this case Brancusi’s) or a Scottish landscape photo. Fine examples below:

A highly competitive game between evenly matched teams with lots of good dodging, blocking and athleticism shown. Well done to all!

Research at ISL!
Our young researchers will be playing a key role in this very important upcoming event; as ISL plays host to the bi-annual Multilingual Learning in International Education Conference in March 2019.
This conference draws renowned researchers, as well as expert teachers, from around the world and is an excellent way to deepen our understanding in working with multilingual students. We are very proud of our Research Institute students, who will also be presentin...g at the conference, as well as working alongside the ECIS MLIE Committee as hosts.

Professional Development at ISL!
The Primary teachers have been busily involved in some very special professional development. Leah Mermelstein has inspired us to truly understand and learn an approach to personalise learning for each student in their writing development.
Students across all ages typically learn how to compose narrative, opinion and informational writing. The 'Writing Workshop' approach gives students a chance to use what they already know or what they are passionate about and apply this to their writing. It was a wonderful way to kick off the New Year and get inspired going into Term 2.

Parent Workshop: Monday 14th January 8:30-10:00am There are many challenges associated with an international move, and we know only too well that global mobility impacts children and is a concern for many families. During our Transitions workshops we speak a lot about the ways that parents and the school can help our children settle and feel happy in their new school. This particular workshop, the second one this year, focuses on the life in London. Participants will hear about success stories and those needing our advice and help. All ISL parents are invited to join us on Monday. See you here!

The Festival of Lights and Winter Fair again lived up to its reputation as one of the highlights of the ISL Calendar, both for MYP and PYP students. The hard work and preparations which had gone in to the evening were apparent for all to see. Here are some of our favourite shots.

Truffes au chocolat pour Noël! Kindergarten students discovered new French vocabulary by mixing chocolate with butter and by creating their own chocolatier chef’s hat. They reflected about their families for their children's rights unit and made them a sweet gift! #Languages #French #chocolate #chocolatier

Unit of Inquiry: Where we are in place and time EC1 students have made a progress in their learning of the Unit of inquiry where we are in place and time with the central idea ‘All families are unique and have their own histories and traditions’. Children role-played Mums and dads, sisters and brothers the things they think they do at home or at work.
To understand the differences in traditions and celebrations, we had a visitor who shared some facts about celebration of Diwali. During this unit, students learnt to talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members. They noticed similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families and their traditions.
