Happy Chinese New Year! 新年快乐!
Did you know? The Chinese New Year originated in the beginning of the Shang Dynasty as a way to honor ancestors and heavenly deities. Legend says there was a monster called nian, the Chinese word for year, who was afraid of the color red and loud noises, so Chinese people decorated their houses in red and played with firecrackers to scare it off! CNY (or Spring Festival 春节/Lunar year), is the most important festival in China, with a 7-day long ho...liday. During this time, China is dominated by iconic red lanterns, loud fireworks, massive banquets and exuberant celebrations across the world. Chinese New Year is never on a fixed date as it follows the Chinese Lunar Calendar which often falls within January or February of the Gregorian year. Celebrations include decorating lanes with vibrant red lanterns and colorful lights, house spring-clean (which includes a thorough cleaning of all spaces to rid the house of old year’s dust), holiday shopping (for new clothes), family reunion dinner (most people go back to their hometown), giving and receiving the Red Envelopes, watching CCTV’s New Year’s Gala, set off firecrackers and much more! And what do Chinese people eat for CNY? Dumplings (symbol of fortune), fish (symbol of a surplus in the year end and good luck for the coming year), glutinous rice balls (symbol for completeness and family reunion) and spring rolls (shaped like a gold bar meaning a fresh start). It comes as no surprise that food is so important in China as it is full of symbolism. The InternChina Team wishes you an awesome Chinese New Year with lots of dumplings and that you step into the next year with the right foot! 新年快乐!恭喜发财!

Character of the Week !
海 - (Hǎi) Meaning = Sea;Ocean; Big lake
... Components: The 海 Hǎi character is composed of two elements, the radical on the left side (氵Shui) which means #water (水) and the right side (每 Měi) which hints the pronunciation.
This is the same character in #Zhuhai 珠海 (Pearl Sea) and can be found in thousands of characters most of which are #sea related!
Examples: 海边(Hǎibiān)- Seaside🏞 海南(Hǎi nán)- A Chinese Province located "South of the Sea" 上海(Shàng hǎi)- 1 of 4 China's Municipalities and the second most populous city in the world. 海鲜(Hǎixiān)- Seafood🍤
Sentence: 我想住在海边。 Wǒ xiǎng zhù zài hǎibiān. I want to live by the sea.
Good way to remember it? Why not form a sentence with its components? Every (每)drop of water (氵)💧forms a big BIG Ocean 🌊

Travel Tip!
Thinking about interning in #Qingdao or #Dalian? Why not take a small trip to the "City of Ice"?
#Harbin, a northeastern Chinese city famous for its Russian architecture and the 冰灯节 Ice and Snow Festival, as well as its peculiar cuisine which incorporates both western and Chinese dishes will leave you delighted!
... What you need: Bear in mind Harbin has extremely cold winters of - 40 º C which can last for up to 6 months. That's half a year in extreme temperatures, so make sure to take appropriate clothing such as: Big warm coat which should be longer than waist length Northeastern-style fur hat with ear flaps Snow boots (very important if you don't want to slip all the time!) Face mask (it will be hard to breathe under low temperatures.) Well-insulated, high quality gloves that cover the wrists will help you through the coldness.

Are you familiar with the legend surrounding The #FisherGirl, one of #Zhuhai's most important scenic spots? In case you're not familiar, here's a quick version of Zhuhai's best known love tale. 🥰
Legend has it that an angel descended to earth one day and fell in love with the beauty of the land. Reluctant to return, she turns herself into a fisher girl, using her knowledge and powers to serve the local community, earning a living by weaving nets and searching for pearls.
One ...day, she fell in love with a young fisherman named Hai Peng, who, due to malicious comments from others, demanded that she remove her magical bracelets and give them to him, as proof of her love. The fisher girl explained that the bracelets had been given to her to avoid immortality, and removing them would cause her death. Yet, Hai Peng did not believe her and as proof of her love, the fisher girl removed her bracelets, and instantly died in Hai Peng's arms.
Hai Peng's remorse and sorrow moved an elder named Jiu Zhou Huan who taught him how to bring the fisher girl back to life. With his own blood, Hai Peng was able to bring her back and marry her.
As a present, the fisher girl gifted one gigantic pearl to the elder Jiu Zhou Huan.
A beautiful story with a happy ending!

While working in Qingdao for 6 months, InternChina offered great support managing my travels and providing me with useful information upon my arrival. Their homestay program was fantastic to improve my Chinese language skills on a day-to-day basis with a local family and IC offered a great amount of networking opportunities with other internationals as well as the local community during weekly activities. Overall, a great program, very kind employees and I can recommend IC without hesitation.

Went to Zhuhai for June and July this year and it's been one of the best decisions i've made. Zhuhai (and China as a whole) is a great place and ive got to see many more cities and towns in neighbouring provinces with Intern China.

Paul and the IC staff (shout out to Coral, Vicci, Monica and Janice- thanks for everything guys!) really are amazing, as soon as we arrived we we're shown everything we need and we stayed in a really nice flat for our time there. The IC staff look after you if you need it and will go out of their way for you more than any other organisation ive encountered but they also really become your friends as well. Trips are organised all the time and the weekly dinner is a great way to meet the other interns (even if we spent so much time together anyway).

My internship was definitely not what i was expecting but in a great way, i was able to ask questions any time i needed some help and really got an insight into the company and how it operated-something i seriously doubt i could get at home.

Overall the experience has been amazing and i really appreciate everything IC has done for us, im currently planning to go back to China next year and would seriously recommend anyone to do an internship with InternChina. Genuinely cant think of a downside!

Today is my last day in Chengdu after 3 months as an intern in the InternChina office... Leaving is heartbreaking as I've lived the best summer of my life! Being an intern at InternChina is definitely "more than just an internship", it is a unique experience in the Chinese culture and working environment, as well as the best opportunity to discover China. I've enjoyed every second of my time here, met so many people that I will never forget and will miss deeply, especially our IC Chengdu team - Paul Y. for being the best manager ever, Cassie, Miya, Harri, Mai & Louis for being the best colleagues/flatmates!

You made me fall in love with Chengdu (and China) and I will come back for sure!

So I am coming to the end of my 6 month internship in Zhuhai China this week and what an awesome experience it was. Zhuhai is such a nice place and I met so many cool people here and that together with all the amazing staff from Intern China really made the last 6 month here a comfortable life style. I couldn’t have asked for a better company to do a internship with, I learned so much and was able to really push myself to the next level of my career. Started as a intern this year and coming back next year to a full position as a Business Development and Operation Perfection Manager, whoop whoop!! ;) Intern China really did a great job in connecting me to this opportunity ;) and I am really looking forward to coming back next year.. Oh yeah and Paul is a great guy ✌️Shot bro

My three month internship in Qingdao, China was the perfect summer segue from my undergraduate science degree to my business master's. The internship itself was excellent, coming with a high degree of training, responsibility and insight into business and culture. It allowed the development of old skills and the teaching of new ones. Furthermore, I have learned a lot of the Chinese language along the way and the network I have developed will undoubtedly be useful in the future.

To top it off, InternChina provided incredible and unrivaled support to help me adjust to the culture shock. The Thursday dinners and weekend events enhance the overall experience and provide a chance to socialise with other foreigners in the same situation as you. The organised trips across the country afford a glimpse into the kaleidoscopic geography of the nation. Finally, the local knowledge of the IC team served to augment my experience in Qingdao, helping me to discover the best restaurants, shops, and things to do/avoid.

10/10, would recommend.

My 6 months internship within the IC Zhuhai office went far beyond my expectations : I have developed my guangxi, met a lot of great people and Zhuhai is an awesome place to live !

The office work experience was fantastic : I learned and matured a lot, and I am thankful for how fantastic the IC family has been to me. This internship wouldn't have been the same without this amazing team. From the very beginning I've been given many responsibilities and everyone has been so supportive and attentive to me. It's been a challenging yet very rewarding internship. I gained self confidence and many useful skills for my futur career.

IC slogan is right and I recommend IC for its programs and great opportunities. I wish Padoga Project all the success it deserves !

I am looking forward to coming back to China in the near future ! :)

User

My 12 week internship in Chengdu has been amazing! I have experienced a wide range of culture, cuisine and language and made many new friends! In terms of the internship itself I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with really interesting conservation and sustainability projects, which has given me a unique and valuable insight into the working dynamics of NGOs within China. InternChina's programme has been a really positive experience as, for me, IC have provided the ideal balance between gaining valuable independent work experience overseas, whilst also providing a constant support network. The people in the IC Chengdu office are awesome! From my airport pick up to my last Thursday dinner, the IC staff have been really friendly, approachable and supportive, you don't just feel like a participant! I would definitely recommend InterChina to others :)

In March-May 2016 I completed an 8 week internship in Zhuhai with Intern China. It was my first time living in Asia, and first time living in a country in which English was not the native language.

I had an incredible experience as an intern, working as a digital marketing specialist in the overseas brand marketing team of a very well respected organisation. I was given so much support throughout my time at the company, both by Intern China themselves, and my colleagues in my internship.

On the more social side of things, I was grateful that Intern China arranged 'Thursday Dinner' nights with the rest of the interns, as well as regular trips and events. This made it much easier not only to get to know more people, but to develop and practice language skills. It also helped me to better understand the culture.

I am incredibly grateful to Intern China for providing me with such an opportunity that helped me to develop my professional skills, my personal attributes, and for giving me unconditional support for the entirety of my time in Zhuhai.

I would certainly recommend a programme like this to many of my friends, and I hope that more people have the opportunity to do something like this in the future.

User

If you are thinking about doing an internship in China, I can whole-heartedly recommend you do it with InternChina. I just got back from three fantastic months in the beautiful city of Qingdao, that I got to know very quickly thanks to all the fun activities organized by InternChina and together with the lovely people I got to know through them. If you want to experience more than just an internship - do one with InternChina! You will love it!!!

User

I recently completed the Generation UK 3+5 programme in Qingdao. It was an amazing experience and InternChina helped to achieve this. InternChina provided so much support before and during the programme and made sure we adjusted to life in China so that we enjoyed our time there. I can't wait to go back to China in the future and I would definitely encourage anyone who is looking to Intern in China to choose InternChina.

User

I recently completed a 6 week internship in Zhuhai with internchina and can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I've made. During my time here I have learned more than I would've learned in a year in the UK. I was given lots of responsibility in my internship, enabling me to gain a range of skills and was even offered a job at the end of the role!

Internchina were incredibly supportive. They organised great trips, socials and cultural activities to ensure we settled in and integrated quickly. I highly recommend internchina, the company and the staff made my time in China a trip of a lifetime.

User

I had a brilliant experience in Chengdu with InternChina. The program was very well organized, and the InternChina staff were supportive, helpful and good fun. The language course in the first three weeks was challenging, interesting and very enjoyable, and the internship was great work experience. InternChina also organised meals with all the interns, and fun outings and activities such as a weekend away to the Four Sisters Mountain. I would highly recommend interning with InternChina!

User

I cannot think of a better way to have spent my summer than with InternChina in Zhuhai. I really enjoyed my work placement and know that the experience I got with the company they set me up with will be extremely beneficial to me in kick-starting my career. Being in China was amazing and the InternChina team made adjusting so easy and natural that I was able to fall in love with the culture from the moment I got there. I cannot thank InternChina enough and highly recommend the experience to anyone who wants to meet amazing people, gain unique work experience and live and love China with the 24/7 support of the brilliant and fun InternChina team. Thank you!! <3

User

I can honestly say I went to InternChina with very little thought, I saw the advert for it on FB saying that they had a connection with my university and I thought that I might as well apply just because it seemed like it could be fun and helpful for my future.

It would be an understatement to say that the IC team exceeded my expectation, however, it would not be an understatement to say that through this team I had one of the best experiences in my life.

On one hand, IC allowed me to go to a part of the world that I had never seen before; I always loved the idea of going to Asia but had never really had the opportunity to go. There has been one thing that I have been saying to everyone since I’ve gotten back and that is “everyone has to go to China at least ONCE in their life!” China was, to say the least, incredible! The people, culture, food, etc. was so different yet so amazing - that being said it may take a while to get used to certain customs however if you are open minded you will be fine.

On the other hand, the IC team made the process of finding an internship and getting into China extremely easy. Before and during the time I spent there, I had constant contact where I was given great advice and never felt as though I didn’t have someone to help me. I have to give a special shout out to the team in Dalian (Colin, Zoe and Nhung), because not only did I feel as though I had people to guide and help me, I feel as though I have life long friends who I have created great memories with! Additionally, I had a wonderful internship, I was constantly busy and the people I worked with were just the best!

I could honestly write about how amazing this experience is forever, but I won’t bore everyone. I will say though, that this is 100% an experience worth going to, not only are the team very helpful and lovely, but the experience is one of a kind.

User

Completed a two-month internship in Qingdao. Excellent experience and would highly recommend. InternChina staff in the Qingdao office help ease the stress tremendously of moving across the world into a completely foreign culture. They are friendly, welcoming and go out of their way to help you in any way they can. Thanks for a great experience InternChina!

User

Coming to China with InternChina has been the best decision I could have possibly made. They manage to find the perfect balance between professionalism and serenity. When I encountered a problem- no matter its type- I received immediate support and the issue got solved within 24hours. The Chengdu InternChina team made me feel extremely welcomed and enabled me to make the best out of my first China adventure! The interaction with the other interns in regard of the social life was amazing because you automatically find yourself embedded in a network of people that are facing the same struggles, making the same experiences and all share the same love and fascination for China.I can highly recommend InternChina to everyone - they are great!!

User

Chengdu! It was a true home away from home for me during my four month internal internship at the InternChina office there.

I lived in the same flat as my fellow office interns and just next door from my boss! That might sound like a terrifying prospect, but it felt like I was going to work with my extended family! Speaking of whom, Thelma, Paul, Cassie, Henry and Lucy from my office were an honour to work alongside. All of them positive, enthusiastic and hilarious people, who were there to support me every step of the way. They all cared massively about their work and I gained a real appreciation for how much effort goes in behind the scenes of a seemingly seamless experience for all the other interns!

This sense of belonging went far beyond the limits of the office, however, as I was acquainted with all of the InternChina staff over Skype calls or chats in my first week and felt truly initiated right away. Besides that, there are plenty of opportunities to train and learn new skills in marketing, web design, graphic design, business development and of course Chinese (if you're a Sinophile like me!) and the staff across all the cities were always keen to get the interns involved in all aspects of the machinery of the company.

Even if you've never laid eyes on a baozi (do it) and feel like interning in China would be the last thing on your mind, I can promise you'll feel different by the end!

As my classmates and I finish our five month program abroad in Zhuhai, we have all come to realize how much we will miss Zhuhai. The people we met along with the experiences that we gained in Zhuhai will never leave us.

InternChina helped my classmates and I assimilate in Zhuhai-by giving us a great experience. They helped my classmates and me in numerous ways, giving us orientation packets, answering our WeChat questions, planning great trips and Thursday dinners- which benefitted all of us greatly. The IC team is a group of talented and motivated people who were always there to help and we cannot thank you enough. My classmates and I enjoyed the two trips that InternChina took us too. Coral took all 15 of us to Taipei, Taiwan and planned an extraordinary week of traveling around the country. Paul took all of us to Shanghai and Beijing and planned great activities in both cities. They were both so accommodating and patient with all 15 of us.

I am beyond grateful for the incredible opportunity of working, living and studying here in Zhuhai. InternChina put my classmates and I into homestays and I can honestly say that for a lot of us, that was the best part of this whole experience.

Thank you InternChina for making my study abroad experience a positive experience.
