‘INTO THE DARK’ – a contemporary art exhibition

The Menier Gallery is delighted to host a debut London exhibition by first year Fine Art students from the University of Creative Arts, Farnham campus.
The theme of INTO THE DARK responds to the season of Advent, traditionally a time of darkness and reflection before the light of Christmas, but also to current world events.
With the rise of the far right in the US and Europe; increasing tensions with Russia; and rising racial intolerance and economic uncertainty in the UK following the Brexit vote; it feels as though we are entering a new and much darker age.
We can already look back at the post war period as a time of optimism, open borders, and a liberal consensus which is now at a point of inflexion or collapse.
As first year fine art students the exhibitors bring a fresh perspective to this challenge and threat, drawing on their different cultural backgrounds and life experiences. Students exhibiting have lived in the UK, US, Russia, Sri Lanka , and have worked in financial services, the NHS.
Their responses are individual and varied, some drawn to the depth and resonance of darkness and some fighting back for global rationality and liberalism.
