Immigration: White Paper sets out post-Brexit rules for migrants
#iONVIEWS: The Home Secretary announces a new route for skilled workers, strengthened border security and an end to free movement as part of a new immigration system.
Tens of thousands of low-skilled migrants could come to the UK to work for up to a year under proposed new post-Brexit immigration rules.
... The measure, which would last until 2025, is intended to protect parts of the economy reliant on overseas labour.
Home Secretary Sajid Javid today (Wednesday 19 December) set out plans for a new single, skills-based immigration system which marks the end of free movement.
The new immigration system will introduce a new route for skilled workers which favours experience and talent over nationality. It will enable employers to have access to the skills they need from around the world, while ensuring net migration is reduced to sustainable levels.
The White Paper proposals will, in line with the recommendations made by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC);
remove the annual cap on the number of work visas issued widen the skills threshold to include people with qualifications equivalent of A levels ends the requirements for labour market tests by employers wanting to sponsor a worker. Home Secretary Sajid Javid said:
TodayРђЎs proposals are the biggest change to our immigration system in a generation.
We are taking a skills-based approach to ensure we can attract the brightest and best migrants to the UK.
These measures will boost our economy and benefit the British people.

Theresa May survives confidence vote of Tory MPs
Рќф№ИЈ Prime Minister Theresa May has won a vote of confidence in her leadership of the Conservative Party by 200 to 117. After securing 63% of the total vote, she is now immune from a leadership challenge for a year.
Speaking in Downing Street, she vowed to deliver the Brexit "people voted for" but said she had listened to the concerns of MPs who voted against her.
... Her supporters urged the party to move on but critics said losing the support of a third of MPs was "devastating".
The prime minister won the confidence vote with a majority of 83, with 63% of Conservative MPs backing her and 37% voting against her. The secret ballot was triggered by 48 of her MPs angry at her Brexit policy, which they say betrays the 2016 referendum result.

Is Middle of December Going To Be The End of May?
Рќф№ИЈ Conservative MPs are voting on whether Theresa May should stay as their leader with a result expected after 20:00 GMT.
The UK prime minister made a last-minute appeal for support at an emotional meeting of backbench MPs. She told them she will not lead the party into the next scheduled election in 2022 - but wants to stay on to deliver her Brexit deal, MPs said. She faces a vote of confidence in her leadership after 48 Cons...ervative MPs called for one to be held.
On the other hand Theresa May has enough support from Conservative MPs to win a vote of confidence in her leadership tonight, a Sky News tally suggests. A total of 184 Tory MPs have publicly said they will continue to back her as leader - but as the ballot is secret, they could vote differently behind closed doors.
The party has 317 seats, meaning the prime minister needs 159 votes to gain a majority. MPs will vote between 6pm and 8pm tonight, and the result is expected to emerge at about 9pm. If Mrs May wins, she will get immunity from another formal challenge for a year. If she loses, a date for the first round of a leadership election would be set.

Рќф№ИЈ PM delays Brexit vote as she faced 'significant' defeat
#iONVIEWS: Theresa May has dramatically postponed a House of Commons vote on her Brexit deal, admitting she would have suffered a "significant" defeat.
The prime minister confirmed in a statement to MPs she had delayed the meaningful vote on her EU agreement, which had been scheduled for Tuesday night, as she attempts to keep alive both her deal and her premiership. Mrs May told parliament she will instead head to an ...EU summit in Brussels this week to discuss the "clear concerns" of MPs about her deal's so-called backstop arrangement. A three-hour "emergency debate" on the decision to pull the vote is scheduled for Tuesday, after an intervention by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Theresa May says 95% of Brexit deal is done #Brexit- The Moment of truth (7th Episode)
#iONVIEWS: Theresa May has said she is prepared to "explore every possible option" to break the deadlock in Brexit talks.
... She told MPs 95% of the terms of exit were agreed but the Irish border was still a "considerable sticking point". While willing to consider extending the UK's transition period beyond 2020, she said this was "undesirable" and would have to end "well before" May 2022. Labour's Jeremy Corbyn said the Tories were "terminally incompetent and hamstrung by their own divisions"

#iONVIEWS: Protesters seeking a referendum on the final Brexit deal have attended a rally which organisers say was the biggest demonstration of its kind.
