About Iop University Student Community

The University Student Community of the Institute of Physics supports physics and related students and societies across the UK and Ireland.

Iop University Student Community Description

The IOP university student community brings together physics and astronomy students throughout the UK and Ireland, as part of an equal and inclusive community of physicists working together to support each other and promote physics in society.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Physics Society (UPPS)

The IOP Undergraduate and Postgraduate Physics Society (UPPS) is our student advisory body which liaises with us to support physics and astronomy students throughout the UK and Ireland. UPPS connects students together to allow them to share ideas, network and build relations, such as at the Societies Forum where all society presidents and representatives get together and share ideas.

Together we organise various annual trips and events, this includes a trip to CERN and various joint events with IAPS. Additionally, CAPS is the annual Conference for Astronomy and Physics Students, held in a different university each year.

Affiliated societies

The IOP is proud to be able to support the work of university student physics and astronomy societies throughout the UK and Ireland and welcomes applications from student societies that wish to become officially affiliated. Affiliated societies receive a £100 affiliation grant to contribute to their activities, upon completion of the affiliation form.

Additionally, if a student society is running an event that promotes the excitement of physics enabling participants to gain experience or knowledge related to their studies, or future career aspirations, it can also bid for an additional £500 during this academic year. Applications are accepted from student societies that have affiliated and are running events that promote the wonder of physics and enable participants to gain experience or knowledge, related to their studies or future career aspirations. Campus Ambassadors

Students at several universities have been recruited to act as ambassadors for the IOP, promoting the advantages of membership and raising awareness of the IOP’s activities for students among their peers on campus. Known as IOP Campus Ambassadors, they will help to organise and advertise IOP careers events, including giving lecture shout-outs, create displays about IOP membership and work with key societies and groups to highlight the support that students receive through membership of the IOP.
