Join up-and-coming authors Julia Gray, Sue Wallman and Tracy Darnton for a special panel discussion about their brand new YA thrillers, chaired by Guardian critic Imogen Russell Williams. Be prepared for plenty of chat about writing amoral characters, toxic friendship and dark deception. But can we believe anything they say?
Julia Gray’s Little Liar is a twisty psychological thriller about seduction, envy and a friendship dangerously out of control, whilst Sue Wallman’s Your ...Turn to Die is a psycho-chiller bound to wake up your darkest phobias. Tracy Darnton’s fast-paced debut novel, The Truth About Lies, explores the boundaries of memory and the power of lies.
Tickets are priced at £3 (available online at Waterstones.com) which is redeemable against the price of any book sold at the event.
Please contact us if you require any futher info.

Waterstones Islington invites you to join us in welcoming Jessie Greengrass for an evening of discussion about her new novel, Sight.
Jessie is the author of the acclaimed short story collection An Account of the Decline of the Great Auk, According to One Who Saw It. Sight, described by Max Porter as 'One of the finest English novels I've read,' is her debut novel.
Jessie will be signing copies of her books after the event. Refreshments will be provided.
... About the Book:
It seemed, at times, an act of profound selfishness, to have a child so that I might become a parent; but selfish, too, to have a child and stay the same, or not to have one - unless the only honest choice would have been to try to become this kinder version of myself without the need to bring another into it . . .
In Sight a woman recounts her progress to motherhood, while remembering the death of her own mother, and the childhood summers she spent with her psychoanalyst grandmother. Woven among these personal recollections are significant events in medical history: Wilhelm Rontgen's discovery of the X-ray and his production of an image of his wife's hand; Sigmund Freud's development of psychoanalysis and the work that he did with his daughter, Anna; John Hunter's attempts to set surgery on a scientific footing and his work, as a collaborator with his brother William and the artist Jan van Rymsdyk, on the anatomy of pregnant bodies. What emerges is the realisation that while the search for understanding might not lead us to an absolute truth, it is an end in itself.
Wonderfully intelligent, brilliantly written and deeply moving, Sight is a novel about how we see others, and how we might know ourselves.

Waterstones Islington is delighted to welcome local author David Hargreaves, to discuss and read from his debut novel, Under The Table.
David will be joined by Robert Cottrell, editor of The Browser, and will be signing copies of the book after the talk. Refreshments will be provided.
About The Book:
... Former teacher Dominic da Silva discovers in his late fifties that he has terminal cancer. The diagnosis prompts him to return to the diaries he kept from his boarding school years into his early thirties working as a teacher. These notebooks conjure lost tableaux of Britain in the 1960s, 70s and early 80s: with the emotional repression and genteel rural poverty of his youth, through to upbeat accounts of later joyful excess and profound friendships.
After grappling with confusion about his sexuality and his rather grim schoolyears, by the age of thirty, he has carved out a promising career and is married to a wealthy young lawyer. But he will soon discover how supremely ill-suited he is to everything he wants most. Dominic’s diaries chart his lurching journey towards self-recognition – from an apparently perfect life, to arrest and ignominy, and eventually to a hostel for the homeless.
Poignant, clever, and often funny, Under the Table is a powerful account of a life in many ways thwarted, as well as a homage to friendships of all kinds – and a recognition of the toughness upon which they depend.

Waterstones Islington invites you to join us in welcoming Graeme Macrae Burnet, on the release of his new novel, The Accident on the A35.
Graeme, as well as being shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize with 2016's astounding novel His Bloody Project, is a former Waterstones employee. We're delighted to have him here to celebrate the paperback release of his newest novel, the second to feature Inspector Georges Gorski.
Graeme will be signing copies of his books after the event. ...Refreshments will be provided.
About the Book:
There does not appear to be anything remarkable about the fatal car crash on the A35. But one question dogs Inspector Georges Gorski: where has the victim, an outwardly austere lawyer, been on the night of his death? The troubled Gorski finds himself drawn into a mystery that takes him behind the respectable veneer of the sleepy French backwater of Saint-Louis. Graeme Macrae Burnet returns with a literary mystery that will beguile fans of His Bloody Project and The Disappearance of Adele Bedeau. Darkly humorous, subtle and sophisticated, The Accident on the A35 burrows deep into the psyches of its characters and explores the forgotten corners of small-town life.

A possible sighting brings their children, Nan and Flora, home. Together they begin to confront the mystery of their mother. Is Ingrid dead? Or did she leave? Free this Thursday? This is one of the most inventive, original books we've read in a long time. Think Eimear McBride, Joanna Walsh or Ben Marcus. It's also very funny. David Hayden, by some coincidence, also opened Waterstones Islington, way back when, so this is going to be something of a homecoming too. In conversation with David Collard, the author will also be reading from this most magnificent of books. Please try to make it if you can- if you're looking for something new to fall in love with, we can think of nothing more exciting. There will also be wine.
