James Brindley Academy has achieved Artsmark Gold Award!
Our Academy has been recognised that it is strongly committed to the Arts and our Artsmark journey has had a very positive impact on the young people we work with.
"We believe every child should have the opportunity to create, compose, and perform, as well as to visit, experience, participate in and review extraordinary work. Artsmark can help unlock the potential of children and young people, help to develop character ...and talent, and increase their knowledge and understanding. That’s why Artsmark was created: to bring this ambition to life in every classroom." - Artsmark
JBA is strongly committed to the Arts and our Artsmark journey has had a very positive impact on the quality of provision for the young people we work with.
The newly appointed Arts Champion is making a difference by not only monitoring the Arts teaching and learning across the primary phase but also by increasing art accreditations and being trained to deliver Arts Award.
Our plan to help increase awareness of the Arts as a career of choice has been strategically planned for and implemented through a five-phase stepped programme to ensure all our young people can access this at a level that is appropriate to them.
The appointment of a careers outreach staff member leading to develop further links with arts and cultural organisations providing opportunities for work experience will help to sustain our five-phase stepped programme.
We have acted on pupil suggestions and as a consequence, have introduced performing arts, photography, music, textile/printmaking, dance, animation, drumming, DJ'ing and film making.
An arts education helps build academic skills and increase academic performance, while also providing alternative opportunities to reward the skills of children who learn differently.
James Brindley Academy is a champion of the Arts, and the impact it can have on a young persons education, and we couldn't be more thrilled to have achieved the Gold Award.

Willows Centre and Parkview Clinic successfully maintain Autism Accreditation status
In addition to a significant mental health difficulty, around 6 in every 10 young people who require the support of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) have an underlying social communication/Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
In response to this, colleagues working within inpatient CAMHS team at Parkview Clinic and Willows Centre have remained committed to further developing the...ir practice and continuing to provide a high-quality service in which young people with ASD and their families are fully supported and understood. Their great work, which has positively impacted on patient experience, patient safety and clinical effectiveness, has been formally recognised through their maintaining their Autism Accreditation status. They are the only service of its’ kind in the country to achieve this.
Autism Accreditation is an internationally recognised quality standard provided by the National Autistic Society (NAS). It provides services with a ‘kite mark’ of excellence, formally recognising and promoting the high standard and quality of care provided to those with ASD. If Autism Accreditation Status is awarded it is effective for 3 years. After which time the service is again formally reviewed.
Once a service signs up to working towards achieving Autism Accreditation, they carry out a detailed self-audit against an extensive list of Autism Accreditation Standards. These Standards enable areas in need of development to be highlighted and prioritised.
Angela Watson, Principal Speech & Language Therapist/Lead for Autism Accreditation for Inpatient CAMHS at Parkview Clinic said:
"Rather than single out those young people with an underlying ASD, we aim to provide a whole service ASD friendly approach which is of equal benefit to all given the impact of a significant mental illness on cognitive and everyday functioning."
Parent of a former pupil at Willows said:
"Parkview clinic and Willows Centre provided incredibly helpful advice, understanding and life changing support, both for my daughter and me. We will be forever grateful. My daughter is now managing life successfully and achieving her life goals, none of which would have been possible without the help of the autism team. They are amazing!"
Congratulations to our In-Patient CAMHS team at Parkview Clinic and Willows Centre for retaining their Autism Accreditation Status from the National Autistic Society!

West Midlands Police at James Brindley- Northfield
On Monday PC Matthew Rothwell and his partner PC Ryan Harris joined us along with PCSO’s Luke Field and PCSO Ed Williams and Dog Handler PC Suzanne Cheek who bought along Vader and Trevor her 2 police dogs!
Pupils were given a talk by PC Cheek about the roles Vader and Trevor play in the force and allowed some of the pupils to stroke them both.
... PCSO’s Field and Williams then had a kick around with pupils during lunch and gave the opportunity for them to ask any questions of the officers.
PC Rothwell then did a talk on knife crime and the impact this has on our society and individuals and pupils then had the opportunity to go out to the police car and have a go with all the kit! The sirens were going and PC Harris showed pupils how to use a sting strip!
Pupils had ample opportunity to speak to the officers about the role of a police officer and put some common misconceptions right.
A fantastic afternoon had by all and a huge thank you to West Midlands Police for taking time out of their massively busy schedule to spend time with our pupils and show them the positive and human side to policing.

#JeansForGenes at James Brindley Academy.
Last Friday JBA participated in a charity event called 'Jeans for Genes' Day.
Everyone wore jeans in a show of support for the half a million children in the UK with a life-altering genetic condition.
... A donation was made by each student and staff member towards this worthwhile cause.
A mere £50 provides family support sessions. These sessions, which are led by medical experts, help parents navigate through their child's day-to-day challenges. The support enables parents to be the best advocates for their child's needs.
Thank you to everyone who got involved, and please spread the word.
You can read all about the project here: https://www.jeansforgenesday.org/…
All support goes towards Genetic Disorders UK: https://www.geneticdisordersuk.org/
