How does the old saying go again... red sky at night, Janeites delight?!

We have just selected the winners of our visitor survey prize draw! Thanks so much to all who completed a survey for us in the last year, and many congratulations to the two lucky winners of these beautiful sets of Austen novels. Happy reading! šŸ“–

Please note, the Museum is now closed for January and will reopen on 1 February.

"This is quite the season indeed for friendly meetings. At Christmas every body invites their friends about them; and people think little of even the worst weather. I was snowed up at a friend's house once for a week. Nothing could be pleasanter." - Mr Elton (Emma)

ā±LAST CHANCE TO SEE: Visit before the end of the year to see our ā€˜Persuasion and Warā€™ displays, featuring this beautiful first edition owned by Janeā€™s brother Edward. Ends on 31st December, as does the year that marks the 200th anniversary of Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

We took Granny to see the house and we all loved it. Very nice staff, good welcome, informed guides, a lovely shop and garden. Itā€™s obvious that the site is well looked after, well done. We really liked dressing up and making things in the kitchen. Looking at Janes desk and reading about the family was really interesting. It helped that it was s lovely day. Iā€™d recommend the tearoom opposite for afternoon tea. Marmite the cat - a tip - donā€™t stroke him!!! He is very much in charge.

User

Very interesting family history and displays. Learned a lot aboutJane, her life, death and experiences which impacted on her writing. Well worth a visit.

User

Very interesting and lots of information, lovely garden also there is a nice pub and cafe across the road make your visit even better

Today we visited Jane Austen's house and museum and I am so glad we did. It was my birthday treat, such a special place. I highly recommend this to all fans of Jane. The rooms are so light and beautiful and the gardens are just as you would expect them to be. The staff are very friendly and helpful and Marmite the cat made us feel very welcome.

Seemed appropriate to make my 1st visit in this 200th Anniversary year, and I wasnā€™t disappointed. The village setting and the garden are like Ms. Austenā€™s novels - gently and iconically English. The displays in all the rooms were interesting and easily seen, and captured the essence of the period. The staff were helpful and passionate about their subject and keen to share their knowledge without being overbearing - everyone was charming. I found her small writing table and chair particularly moving - so amazing that it has survived! Also Cassandraā€™s letter about her sisterā€™s last hours. A wonderful place so beautifully presented - well done. Will certainly be coming again. And again .....

My husband and I visited for the first time yesterday. My grandparents lived in Hampshire so I can't believe I have never been before! I have missed a real gem. The house is charming and beautifully preserved with some lovely Austen family artefacts. It feels like a house, not a museum, and you can really imagine what it was like when Jane Austen lived here. A lovely selection of gifts in the shop too. (Hello to Marmite the cat who was definitely in charge there!) Well worth a visit for all Austen fans.

Lovely house, exhibits are well displayed and volunteer guides are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I was surprised how large the house was. There were not too many visitors (rainy Friday in March) and we could take our time walking through all the rooms. We then went on to Chawton House (inherited by Jane's brother Edward) - within walking distance and well worth a visit. Tickets to both houses are valid for a year.

User

Jane Austen's house is full of charm and very homely. So many fascinating personal artefacts, it makes the visit really interesting for all ages. It's the kind of place you want to keep going back to.

User

It was the 1st time I'd been. Went to a special event in the evening. It was very interesting and all the team there were so friendly and engaging. I would recommend a visit here to anyone.

User

It was my dream for many years to come here from the USA, and what a dream come true it was! I was enchanted with everything and especially appreciated the knowledgeable docents/guides who really made history come to life! I was lucky enough to speak to Jeremy Knight who brought so much to the experience. Thankfully the place hasnā€™t turned commercial. Instead itā€™s a modest, dignified testament to the great lady!

User

It was a spur of the moment visit. Lovely house very interesting and informative. Beautiful gardens. Chawton village is charming. The most surprising thing it that your entrance fee is valid for a year; in all probability we will be back there with our Grandaughter as I am sure she will love it. There were even dressing up clothes for them

User

I made my second visit here at the end of August this year. It was just as fantastic as my previous visit. It was lovely to see the rooms where they had redecorated with the replica wallpapers based on fragments found in them. The gardens looked beautiful in the summer sunshine and the little book bench decorated by the local school was a wonderful addition.

User

I have always wanted to see the house after reading her books, I had the opportunity to go this weekend and absolutely loved it, from the staff in the shop to around the museum they where brilliant, would highly recommend it. If you read pride and prejudice and then read Jane Austen life you can see the resemblance.

User

I came a few years ago and I finally came back today. I can definitely see the work that has gone in, to improve the displays. I was enchanted back then and equally enchanted this time round. If you are a fan of Austen, this house is worth the visit.

User

Beautiful house and gardens, well worth the visit for a relaxing day, the village is stunning.

User

Absolutely amazing, that is for real fans of Jane! The house is a lovely place located in a picturesque village. I strongly recommend visiting there and drink a cup of tea at Cassandra Cup, in front of the museum.

User

A must for Jane Austen fans, ticket gives you year long access which is great. Staff where friendly and knowledgeable. We found it easier to walk in from Alton where we where staying, although wouldn't advise this if you have mobility issues. Lovely coffee shop across the road as they have no tea room themselves, but do have rest rooms.

User

Well worth a visit you actually get to see a lot of the house. Also a visit to Chawton house is worth while.

User

It is wonderful to see this beautiful house being so well maintained and storing so much precious literature. I like the idea of adopting a book and intend to do so. We were made very welcome by a charming man in the hall and all helpers were informative and enthusiastic. The walled garden was charming and enticing cakes tempted us in the old kitchen with a historic range. Iā€™m glad we made a detour to visit Chawton House.
