Hello everyone!
This Wednesday 18th July, we've got an unmissable gig for you, as we welcome back acclaimed Mercury Prize nominees Dinosaur, at the end of a UK and Europe-wide tour featuring music from their brilliant new album 'Wonder Trail'.
Led by BBC New Generation Artist, Laura Jurd (trumpet), with Elliot Galvin (keyboards), Conor Chaplin (bass), and Corrie Dick (drums), their music is utterly distinctive, mixing jazz and improvised music with folk melodies and synth-pop... influences; its imaginative, colourful and full of surprises.
Dinosaur have played at jazz festivals across the world including the North Sea Jazz (just this weekend!), Montreal, and Molde, as well as collaborating with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia and the Ligeti Quartet. This gig really is a unique chance to catch them at our intimate venue in Sheffield.
Here's some music: https://youtu.be/siOX056cx-c
We're so excited to welcome back one of the UK's very best bands; come down and see them! Its just £8, doors are 8.15pm, music 8.45pm. Once again we've got the very best new music at The Lescar on a Wednesday. Get there early by the way for a good seat, its going to be a busy night!

Hello all,
**** GIG CANCELLATION THIS WEDNESDAY 11th JULY ****
We’re really disappointed to let you know that, following yesterday’s football result (you may have noticed it!), we’ve taken a reluctant decision to CANCEL this Wednesday’s Greg Abate / Nicola Farnon gig at The Lescar.
... Unfortunately the gig clashes with the England World Cup semi-final which kicks off at 7pm on Wednesday night, and if past semi-finals are anything to go by (well both of them in the last 28 years), it will go to penalties, which would take the gig start time to 10pm, leaving us just 1 hour of playing time for the band, and the possibility of the band having to compete volume-wise with victorious footie fans! We’re also acting on advice from The Lescar as they will be dealing with a really busy pub that night, and the whole situation will make it difficult for them to manage properly. We guess that some of you might also want to enjoy the match.
We’re really sad, because we love this band and we were really looking forward to hosting them again. Greg was really keen to play in Sheffield again and I know he is disappointed. Its also such a treat to have a US musician of his stature playing for us at The Lescar.
SO …. We have agreed with Greg that he will DEFINITELY return to Sheffield next summer, and we’ll have news on that soon.
AND… If you have a ticket purchased in advance, you have a few options:
1) We will be there to refund you on Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm, on presentation of your ticket. 2) Please email us at Lescarjazz@gmail.com and we’ll arrange payment back to you. 3) Go to the Porter Brook Gallery with your ticket and they will refund you. 4) If you would like to use your ticket at a future gig you’ll be welcome to do so, although please do email us in advance if you intend do this, so that we know that you are coming, in case its a busy one and we need to reserve you a space. This offer stands until the end of 2018.
ALSO ….. if you know anyone who is coming down on Wednesday, please can you let them know, in case they don’t pick up our messages on the website, Facebook and Twitter. THANK YOU!!!!
Our next gig is now Dinosaur, on Wednesday 18th July …… This will be AMAZING and VERY BUSY, so please do come down early. Can’t wait for that one. What a week! Imagine ….. England World Cup Winners, Dinosaur back at The Lescar. Perfect.

Hello everyone!
This Wednesday 4th July at The Lescar we present some beautiful original music, simultaneously rich and fragile, based around a unique sax/string quartet/drums line-up led by acclaimed Manchester based drummer Johnny Hunter.
Inspired by a photograph taken by Voyager 1 in 1990 - the Earth as seen from a distance of 6 billion kms, less than 1 pixel in size, the music is in four movements, and seeks to provide the listener with the perspective and serenity that m...ight be possible from the edge of the Solar System.
The full wonderful line-up is Mark Hanslip (tenor sax), Gemma Bass (violin), Aby Vulliamy (viola), Alice Eldridge (cello), Seth Bennett (double bass), Johnny Hunter (drums).
We're so looking forward to this. The music mixes composition with expressive improvisation to create something entirely new and quietly reflective.
Here's what it sounds like: https://soundcloud.com/johnnyhunterm…/p ale-blue-dot-extracts
Take a break from all that football (you may need it after all the excitement of Tuesday's game, or you may wish just to escape it full stop!), and spend a couple of hours with us in a different place listening to 6 wonderful creative musicians.
Its just £8, doors are 8.15pm, music 8.45pm. The very best new music, once again at The Lescar on a Wednesday night!

Hello everyone!
This Wednesday 27th June we're excited to welcome back Mercury and MOBO prize nominees Roller Trio. Their last gig at The Lescar brought in our biggest ever crowd. Rejuvenated, they're touring a brilliant new album on Edition Records, and a new sound, now featuring energetic and innovative Chris Sharkey on guitar and electronics (last with us for that incredible gig with NYC sax legend Ellery Eskelin), alongside original members James Mainwaring (sax, electr...onics) and Luke Reddin Williams (drums). Their music is catchy and energetic, mixing heavy bass, processed beats, and electronics with improvised music; the new album represents another leap forward for this acclaimed band. Come and hear the new music first at The Lescar.
You can listen to (and buy!) their new album, out now on Edition Records here: https://rollertrioband.bandcamp.com/relea ses
'A band destined for greatness’ — Mike Chadwick, JazzFM
'Dark, menacing, bass heavy - the new sound of UK jazz' — Gilles Peterson, BBC6 Music
Its just £8 to get in for one of the most exciting groundbreaking bands on the UK music scene. Please do come down and support us putting this incredible music on at The Lescar. Doors 8.15pm, music 8.45pm. Arrive early for a good seat; its going to be busy this one!

Hello everyone!
GIG CANCELLATION: Rob Luft on Wednesday 1st August
We're really sorry to let you know that due to an unavoidable problem with scheduled flights for a European tour, Rob Luft will not now be able to perform at The Lescar on Wednesday 1st August.
... Rob has given us some of our favourite moments at The Lescar in recent months, so of course we're really sad that he won't be able to appear on this occasion, but we're in touch with him and really hopeful that he will be back with us at another date in the not too distant future, either with his own band or in some of the other amazing line-ups with whom he is appearing regularly.
We've also decided that as this is quite a late decision we won't be running a gig on that night, and will take a well-earned night off from the jazz, to recharge the Jazz at The Lescar team's batteries for an amazing run of gigs already booked in up to the end of the year!
If you have purchased tickets for this gig, or know of someone who has purchased them or made travel plans, please can you let us or them know, and we will of course refund the price of the ticket, or alternatively, those tickets will be valid for any other gig in our 2018 programme. The one slight caveat to this is if you plan to redeem your ticket at any of the Roller Trio, Dinosaur, or Nicola Farnon gigs. As we are expecting these to sell out, please can you let us know in advance, so that we can ensure that there is space reserved for you. Email address: lescarjazz@gmail.com.
Thank you as ever for your support and understanding of this situation, and please note: THIS WEEK'S GIG FEATURING THE MANCHESTER JAZZ COLLECTIVE IS STILL ON! 🙂 Hopefully see you there!

Hello everyone!
This Wednesday 20th June we're truly excited to welcome the Manchester Jazz Collective to The Lescar; a vibrant collaboration of the finest musicians from the Manchester jazz scene, covering a range of original music rooted in contemporary jazz, yet reflecting the energy and individual influences and experiences of the ten musicians involved. Expect to hear everything from middle eastern harmonies, to afro jazz, heavy metal and rock grooves, and Manchester's ...club culture. Pianist Andy Stamatakis-Brown was responsible for Cottonopolis, winner of the prestigious Irwin Mitchell Originals' commission at the Manchester Jazz Festival in July 2017, combining the dance music of Manchester’s iconic Hacienda nightclub with the sights and sounds of Manchester’s industrial revolution, and which featured the members of this band. You may have seen other members of the band in the long-running and ground-breaking Beats & Pieces Big Band (about to embark on a short tour of the US and Canada), and also in the likes of Sloth Racket, and Article XI, and Favourite Animals, who did that amazing double bill gig for us at the end of last year.
Kyran Matthews / Saxophones, Jeff Guntren / Tenor Saxophone and Woodwinds, Emily Burkhardt / Saxophones and Woodwinds, Nick Walters / Trumpet, Graham South / Trumpet, Ellie Smith / Trombone, Rich McVeigh / Bass Trombone, Andrew Stamatakis-Brown / Piano, Paul Baxter / Bass, Johnny Hunter / Drums.
Here's some music: https://youtu.be/CLAxVxBCFVM
We're so excited to be bringing these guys over from Manchester; their music is exubrant, creative and alive. Its just £9 to get in - that's less than £1 per incredible musician on the stage! Please come down and support us putting on this amazing new music every week at The Lescar. Doors 8.15pm, music 8.45pm.

Hello everyone!

Sally’s career goes back to her first album in 1996, and includes writing for BBC TV and Radio 4 drama, tours in Europe with Italian band Planet Funk, featuring on Richard Hawley’s ‘Lady’s Bridge’ album and working with electronic artist Scanner.

Hello everyone!
This week at The Lescar we're truly delighted to welcome back one of the country's finest and most creative drummers. A member of Mercury prize shortlisted Dinosaur, Corrie Dick brings a truly all-star band, including three other incredible musicians from across best of the UK jazz scene, including acclaimed guitarist Rob Luft, lyrical folk-jazz pianist, and fellow Scot Tom Gibbs and Corrie’s musical colleague from the Elliot Galvin trio, Tom McCredie (bass)....
The musicians in this band have appeared on some of the best and most critically lauded albums in recent years, and featured in bands alongside the likes of Ari Hoenig, Laura Jurd, Gilad Hekselman, Ulf Wakenius, and Jasper Høiby. Corrie, Tom and Rob have all performed incredible gigs for us at The Lescar, most recently, Rob with Alice Zawadzki, and Corrie and Tom with Elliot Galvin's Trio. Anyone who was there will also remember that amazing night a couple of years ago when Corrie brought his 9 piece 'Impossible Things' band to us; an unforgettable night of music.
The trio of Luft/Dick/McCredie has played together for many years, developing their own sun-tinged style, and now they unite with Gibbs’ flowing melodic style to create some glorious, new and, as yet unreleased music. With this line up you know that it will be fluid, lyrical and engaging, rich in harmony, rhythmically assured, creative and warm hearted.
Here's some music, Corrie, Tom and Rob, in Rob's band at the 2017 London Jazz Festival: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs2RNfXZ2 Jw

You can also listen to (and download) Corrie's music here: www.corriedick.bandcamp.com.
