“JETRO Invest Japan Report 2019” published -Innovation by foreign companies spreading across Japan-
JETRO has published the “Invest Japan Report 2019,” a comprehensive report covering recent trends in inward FDI to Japan. These are some features: The number of successful investment projects supported by JETRO was 241, the highest since JETRO started its support for foreign companies. One of these companies is Standard Cognition Corp. , a startup company in California, US, ...is the developer of "Standard Checkout," an AI-based autonomous checkout system. In June 2018, the company established its Japanese subsidiary in Tokyo with the aim of introducing the system to the Japanese retail market, which is the second largest retail market in the world and has also faced a labor shortage in recent years. 33% out of 241 companies come from Europe. The UK is the 2nd country after Germany.
JETRO has officially launched in April 2019 a new program to attract foreign startups that contribute to innovation creation in Japan. At the Innovation Leaders Summit -One of Asia's largest open innovation events- held in October 2019 in Tokyo, 35 foreign startups participated under the recommendation of JETRO overseas offices. In coordination with 28 local governments/municipalities, JETRO also provides support inviting foreign companies to these regions.
The Japanese Government is improving a business environment, introducing an online one stop platform for procedures like company registration through the “Act of Digital procedure”, enacted in May, 2019. According to the on-line survey toward about 2,100 companies, mainly consisting of foreign-affiliated companies supported by JETRO, on business environment in Japan, an improvement has been observed in “Acceptance of Japanese companies and society toward foreign investment” and “Ease of finding partners.”
