About John Fowler Sandaway Beach

A beautiful holiday destination set above the beach in Combe Martin run by John Fowlers

John Fowler Sandaway Beach Description

Sandaway Beach Holiday Park stands on a cliff’s edge at the very edge of the ocean with breathtaking sea views. A stepped path leads you to Sandaway’s private ‘Mermaid’s Cove’ beach. The cove has a rocky foreshore and sprinkling of sand and is the perfect spot for fishing in rock pools while Mum and Dad sit back and enjoy a haven of peace and quiet spotting the passing boats and maybe even a dolphin! Return from the beach and take a dip in our superb outdoor swimming pool with toddler’s area or relax with a drink and something to eat in our Smuggler’s Bar and take in the incredible views. In this setting, you’ll soon find the daily pressures melt away.

Just a 10 mile drive (or walk along the dramatic Coastal path for the more active) are the picturesque villages of Lynton and Lynmouth linked by cliff railway. You’ll be amazed by the views from the Valley of Rocks or you can explore Exmoor – why not see if you can spot a deer or an Exmoor pony!

Combe Martin Beach Holiday Park offers a haven of peace where you can enjoy a restful holiday. The park is set into the valley with picture postcard views from the park. A winding path leads you to the top of the park and to our woodland walk where the kids are free to roam and enjoy the natural surroundings. At the bottom of the park you'll find the clubhouse where you can sit back and enjoy a drink in the bar, have a game of pool or let someone else do the hard work and cook you a bar meal. All of which you can enjoy whilst looking out on some of the very best sea views North Devon has to offer.

Take a wander down to our very own Newberry Beach where you can spend the day relaxing in the sun whilst the kids play in the sea or stroll down into the traditional seaside village of Combe Martin where you will find pubs full of Devon charm where you can enjoy a local ale or enjoy a traditional British tea of fish and chips from the local chippy - just make sure the Seagulls don't steal your chips!

Please note the pool is open from 18th July to 30th August. Outside of these times, guest are welcome to use the pool at our sister park, Sandaway, which is located just a few minutes away.

You get what you pay for. In our case it was very cheap.

Club house. Entertainment, Food and pool were great. Bed linen was lovely and clean. Caravan very dated and in desperate need of some refreshing. But like I said we paid such a small amount we weren’t expecting a palace. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The views were amazing and mermaids cove was an extra bonus onsite.

User

We visited JF Sandaway Beach in June/ July 2018. It’s a lovely site with great facilities. Every member of staff that we interacted with was incredibly helpful, positive and polite. The food and beverage available at the site cafe was competitively priced and of good quality. Overall, this is a very good site that is conveniently located for Coombe Martin, Ilfracombe and the North Devon Coastal Walk. Thanks to all the staff for making us feel very welcome.

User

Lovely location and easy to get to the beaches . The beach at the park is rocks and down steep steps . Our caravan was fine for the cheap price we paid but stank of wet dog . So next time we will make sure we don't have one that allows dogs . The pool lovely and really warm. One life guard was amazing playing with the children and always chatty and happy all the children knew him by his name and he knew all the kids by name. The other one was grumpy sat there and when our little boy got stung by a wasp in the pool and screamed he didn't move of his chair . The bar staff were brilliant and got ice etc. Entertainment was good our four year old loved it. Shop needs to be open later not close at 6.30pm . Overall the caravan was fine for the money we paid and the location is brilliant also staff lovely. Just need a bit of a update generally.

User

The caravan and park were spotless. However niggly bits needed fixing, such as no holder for tea towel, tap faulty, door handle faulty, clip to hold the door open broken, table top wobbly. The entertainment room for the kids was smelly and the arcade machines not working. The shop was reasonably priced but opening quite limited. The “beach” was a patch of rocks at high tide and only accessible by lots of uneven steps, but Woolacombe and Ilfracombe not too far away. Can’t comment on entertainment as didn’t go in the bar. Very helpful staff when we were faced with a very late check in due to car issues. Maintenance not so great- faulty tap reported but not fixed. We booked via sun holidays so price not too bad but wouldn’t pay full price. A nice break overall but just minor maintenance could make it so much better

User

You get what you pay for and we had a cheap deal so for what its worth we made the best of it and had a good short break with the kids. However the site was extremely muddy and wet and people were slipping over and cars were getting stuck. We had a hard time parking and unloading the car due to the muddiness and it ruined all of our shoes.

The caravan was dirty and moldy and the toilet did not flush properly. The bathroom tap was continuously running and the boiler was leaking. The window in the bathroom was broken and was unable to close it which meant it was cold in there as there was no heating accept for a fire. The kitchen cupboard units were all chipped and peeling and the wardrobes were missing glass panels.

The gas hob and oven needed a lighter to be lit as they did not light otherwise and the sofa bed was broken, and i have to say it was the worst bed i have ever had the pleasure of sleeping in. The staff were friendly and helpful and the entertainment was ok but the food wasn't the best. The pool outside wasn't heated as stated and the private beach was just a small area of large rocks. The steps down were incredibly steep and the railing was broken half way down and covering the path forcing you to walk in the mud.....very dangerous especially for children and the walk back up was exhaustible.

The only good thing i have to say about the caravan is that the views were lovely.

The area has alot of things for families to do and there were a few beaches to drive to and we mostly just used the caravan as a base and spent our days out enjoying ourselves. i would definatly visit North Devon again as it is a beautiful place with lots to do and beautiful views but I don't feel that i would stay with John Fowler again.

User

We stayed in a dog friendly van think it had a quick hoover and some bleach put in loo that's about it.. Seating covered in dirty covers stank of dog wee. Dog hairs all over cold tap in toilet didn't work no cover over light in main bedroom light fixture in living room wonky floor in shower room didn't feel safe things found under beds that didn't belong to us.. There was still a dirty stained sheet on pull out bed rubbish under cushions and veranda was a bit rocky.. Such a shame stayed with John fowler in Cornwall had no issues.. Lovely little site but think it has been forgotten about did tell a staff member bout the cleanliness just because we had a dog doesn't mean the van should be dirty he said he would tell housekeeping but no one came didn't spoil the holiday as such just disappointed as it wasn't cheap...

User

We recently stayed here and while the area of the site is stunning there is a lot of work needed on this site. Our budget/bronze caravan was fine for what we needed as we were out and about exploring but the mould and damp everywhere was not want we wanted to see when we first arrived. I didn't find the bar/club very welcoming and the "entertainment " left a lot to be desired. The staff were very blunt and looked like they didn't even want to be there.my children went to play in the indoor games area and many things were dirty and out of order.

The food however was nice and good value.

The cove down the steep steps was beautiful and we loved exploring down there.

Upgrade your facilities and bar/club asap and get the staff to smile a little.

User

Our caravan was lovely. We upgraded to a platinum, couldn't fault that. The clubhouse is very very small, not what we were expecting. The entertainment wasn't the best. The day we left my partner had packed all of our stuff to come home and he left my hairdryer and my expensive GHD Hair straighteners in one of the cupboards. When I realised they had been left I contacted reception at the park and they said I would get a call back as there was no one there that could help. I never got the call back, and on about 5 separate occasions was fobbed off with "getting a call back" and when I did finally manage to speak to the housekeeping people they were adamant that my hairdryer and straighteners were not where I said they were. 100% a lie. I remember very clearly putting them in my bedside table, and my partner said he didn't check those cupboards before we checked out! So where are they sandaway holiday park?!?!

User

I got a call the evening before my holiday to say they would have to cancel because there had been an accident - no further details. They then offered an upgrade to gold accommodation....in St Ives! I said I had plans in Ilfracombe which is why I had booked to stay nearby. The manager said "leave it with me and I'll call you back in half an hour". No call. I then called the park twice before speaking to the bar manager, as the other manager had left, who promised to find out what he could and call me back. He was true to his word and called me back at 9pm but wasn't able to say whether or not the previous manager had sorted the broken boiler. On the day of our holiday, at 8.40am, I get a call offering the same as the night before but from a different manager. I again explained that I had plans in the area and would not go to St Ives. I was again told "leave it with me and I'll call you back in half an hour". No call. I was understanding that they were busy with people checking out but surely a booked arrival is more important?! I just wanted to know - yes or no! 12.45pm I eventually get a call to say they can accommodate us in a pet bronze chalet but promised to give it a deep clean as it wasn't what we had originally booked. By this time I have missed getting my own dog to kennels before the lunch time closure. We also had lunch plans in ilfracombe that day which had to be cancelled. We didn't get there until 6pm meaning we missed the first half day of our holiday. I spoke to the manager and said I would like to complain for stress caused, time wasted and plans cancelled. No offer of anything apart from an extra days stay. Smelly, cold, mouldy accommodation? No thanks. No offer of money back but "leave it with me and I'll see what I can do". Mid week I report a possible leaky toilet or that it may be excessive condensation even though the window was constantly open to air. I was asked if I would be in all day. I said yes, as the weather was bad, but no one turned up. No parking. Thick mud everywhere and wet steps/paths. No lighting on path to walk back to accommodation from club house at night - I struggled even when sober! At checkout this morning I was offered 30% off our next holiday at John Fowler. Nothing in writing to back it up so not likely to happen. Bar and restaurant staff were great (apart from the gooey chocolate pudding being a chocolate muffin microwaved!) and the entertainment staff were great with the kids. Bingo could do with being on at a different time as evening entertainment afterwards didn't start until 9pm and by then my youngest child was starting to get tired. There is kids stuff up until about 7pm but that's too early for my 11 year old to go to bed so we would have to hang around for 2 hours for bingo sales etc to finish. Mermaids cove was great apart from the railing hanging over the steps! Swimming pool was closed when we went to use it. Luckily the holiday was less than £300 for 7 days (or 6 in my case!) otherwise I would have been devastated!

User

Not happy booked for October and again I got a letter stating to look for another park as a big group in park.but the website states my accommodation is available for those dates.sounds like I'm not welcome back at the park.perhaps somebody could explain why as I've been quite and left unit clean.well John fowler you have lost a regular customer.

User

Check in was a joke,we had a four o’clock check in and they made us wait until dead on four, went to use pool one day at 4.15 it was closed yet it is advertised as being open till Five o’clock, the life guard went home at Four twenty. Chefs corner only open 3 days a week for breakfast, and not open lunchtimes. Some of the staff were helpful some were not.
