What a lovely baby friendly pub, after a terrible experience at a nearby cafe the staff today made our lunch for us and our 7 month old son very easy. We really enjoyed the food, flexibility, helpfulness and amends to the menu - as well as our fabulous waitress. Thank you

User

Took my wife here tonight for a meal. The staff couldn't be more accommodating the food was beautiful, the steaks were cooked perfect.

Many thanks for a lovely evening

User

Good food and quick service. Will return again 😁

User

Met up with a couple of friends and had a lovely time. There were only two waitresses on duty which suffice to say they coped extremely well considering Sunday lunch in the sunshine can be a rather testing time but they appeared to cope with the help of the kitchen staff. However all said and done our meals were delicious, served hot and with a smile!

User

I visited at about 1pm on a Thursday with my daughter - hadn't booked. Nice day so sat otside. I had cod in batter, chips and peas and my daughter had mac n cheese from childrens menu. Both were very nice and service was polite and relatively quick. For pudding I had a crumble with ice cream which was nice and my daughter had a 'Chocolate Flowerpot' which she enjoyed although I thought it was a little small and not particularly well presented.

Overall it was a pleasent experience and nothing to complain about... should say it wasn't busy!

User

Good menu, food excellent.

User

Friendly, efficient service and little delay in drinks and food arriving. The food is good value for money. We will eat here again.

User

This is the second time in 2 weeks we have visited the Jovial for Sunday lunch each time being a party of 6

On the first occasion although the food was only just warm it was passable i did mention this the the waiters and hopefully she passed on our comments

But yesterday the same thing food was only just warm and also the veg could and should have been a lot fresher i was unable to eat the veg, once again explaining this to the waitress but not really getting a response just a lame apology was this followed up by senior members of staff? no was my comments passed on? once again I have no idea

We gave The Jovial the benefit of the doubt the first time but will we return? unlikely and it is such a shame

User

Terrible terrible terrible. You'd think on a good Friday you would've have planned staffing and food suppliers. Most choices on the menu were unavailable, no burger buns unless you wanted one with a kids bun. Which I had and was very awkward to eat. My wife's steak was cremated and all the food was luke warm. We eat it as we didn't want to wait for the reheating process. Waited ages at the bar to be served, it wasn't busy but yet customers were turned away because of the shortage of menu items. On a small positive, our waiter was very good. He had a tough day and was embarrassed to represent chef and Brewer, give this guy a big pat on the back as he was empathetic. However, chef and Brewer management... Pull your socks up.

P.s I am not passing trade having grown up in Ripley.

My family and I visited the Jovial Sailor today. We were disappointed with the food. I had the slow cooked rib of beef which was cooked well but the roast potatoes were hard and tasted burnt. The Yorkshire pudding was rock hard and not edible. My husband had the trio of roasts which were over cooked and did not come with all the things set out in the menu like apple sauce. The roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding was over cooked and not edible. My son had a children's burger and it was burnt on one side and dry. In addition the men's toilets were unclean. It was a shame as the menu was good and the restaurant was nice looking.

User

Had the roast - slow cooked beef - which was tender but was done in some sort of smokey/BBQ sauce - very strange! Ordered a side of cauliflower cheese which didn't arrive and was told it would be a few minutes. I had finished my dinner and it never arrived! As we were leaving I saw the waitress with a bowl - presumably for me - and told her to forget it. My husband had the scallops and Bass with risotto. The fish was ok but he thought the scallops tasted strange so left the second one.

Not impressed - service was not great and the waitress looked like she would rather be somewhere else. Never asked if we were happy with food. Not somewhere we would chose to visit again

User

Didn't like the pork belly at all. Service was shocking, the waitress cleared two plates then was at the bar chatting, so my sister took the plates to the bar. We waited a good half hour for her to take our dessert orders. She never once asked if everything was ok with our meals. Shocking I won't be returning nor will I recommend! We spent a lot of money so expected more to be honest!

User

Wow an experience NEVER to be repeated!!Half the menu was not in stock, the service was one of the poorest I have ever experienced, the staff clearly wanted to be anywhere else than working oh and they thought folding napkins was more important than clearing our table. We booked a table at 5pm and after just our main course we left at 6:30 as didn't have time to wait another 45mins for dessert - it wasnt even busy! The member of staff with tattoo sleeves took our payment, we said it must be embarrassing for him running out of everything, to which he replied "Na, not really as I don't do the ordering so it's not my responsibility" wow, just wow!!!

User

We live locally and so from time to time keep giving The Jovial a chance because it's a local pub....it's become a standing joke between us and our friends that we never pay full price when we go because there's always some sort of problem, long wait, cold food, mistaken orders etc etc. and so management knock something off the bill! However I'm posting this time because our latest visit was the worst yet. We were out with my brother and sister in law and my 11 year old disabled niece. We ordered. No starters just main course. No one said there was any waiting time. As we had quite a bit to catch up on we got chatting and before we knew it, nearly an hour had passed and no food. We called the deputy manager over and asked how much longer and he apologised and told us some staff had walked out, they were struggling in the kitchen and muttered something about the manager having to help (we think). He assured us it wouldn't be much longer. We got chatting again and another half hour went by. By now we noticed other tables were murmuring and complaining about the wait. We called the deputy over and once again he apologised but said there was nothing he could do to speed it up. Maddie (my disabled 11yr old niece) was getting a bit restless and grizzly by now as she was hungry, so we decided to just wait a little longer as it was getting late. Just as we were about to get up and leave our food arrived. So we settled down again and prepared to eat.........no such luck! My partners lamb shank was cold, the pie and chicken in my chicken trio were also cold, we checked the food in the others plates and that was cold too! We placed our order at 745 and the food arrived st 950, over two hours! Just disgraceful. We'd had enough and decided to leave, closely followed by two other groups of people who had been on other tables and had also had enough. What on earth had gone wrong? This is your business, what's happening? It will take a lot to give The Jovial any more chances I'm afraid! Not recommended unless you want gold food and a chat! Incidentally after we left we managed to get a table at The Curry Garden in Ripley, who could not have been more helpful, seated, ordered and had got food in front of us within 20 mins, as did another couple who came in after us who also walked out of The Jovial that night. Can definitely recommend the Curry Garden, steer clear of the Jovial Sailor

User

Waited one hour for our two baked Camembert and toast after being told that mains would be 45mins...an hour later and we were told that our mains would be another half hour. The pub didn't look particular busy and another table had the same issue. Both tables walked out before we could get the mains. Shame as it used to be a great pub/restaurant

User

This is my local and I am absolutely disgusted with the level of hygiene, the food and capability of the staff.

We visited tonight I am pregnant and I was served gammon, egg and chips. The gammon was half meat half fat, soaked in oil and the egg I picked up fell apart as it wasn't even cooked properly! I complained and he gave me a free coke! That was it! Absolutely disgusting and never going again! I will travel further for the same price but 100% guaranteed staff to actually have a bit of enthusiasm to be at work! 2 members of staff on 1 at the bar and 1 in the kitchen. I don't know how that place is still open! Do not eat there!!!!

User

Service wasn't great waited a long time for our meal, to then having to return the steak as it was off. It smelt awful and was slimy. Waiter said sorry and come back to say the chef said it was delivered yesterday and had the cheek to offer us free coffees !!

User

My partner and I popped in on Wednesday evening to have a bite to eat and were told there was no space for us and that service could not be guaranteed. Had we booked. No. It was a Wednesday and no more than half a dozen tables were taken. The rest were empty and that was a lot. Perhaps they should not be serving food at all if they cannot manage 2 people who walk in for food without booking. I would have given this 0 stars so please don't think I am giving 1 (I am not). Disgusting service (or lack of I should say). Then went back to the Prince Of Wales in Esher who were fab as always and served delicious food with a smile and brilliant, helpful staff. 5 stars for The Prince Of Wales in Esher.

User

I paid the bill with tesco vouchers, I said to the server. Good job it's only vouchers, I wouldn't be happy to pay for our experience with real money, I said to him " it must be embarrassing for you with loads missing from the menu" to which he replied " nah not at all, I don't do the ordering so it's not my responsibility".. I mentioned that that's not a very good attitude to have! Sunday evening, coming out of winter season I completely appreciate running out of stock by a Sunday evening but extremely poor standards of service (front of house) is inexcusable. Especially as there was only a few tables, for a company as large as chef and brewer I expect so much more in standards... I could formally complain but the standard reply is a complimentary meal, which tbh I have no desire to subject my family to such poor standards again...... More and more I realise it's safer to stay at home and cook up a decent meal.
