About Kate On Conservation

A wildlife conservation blog highlighting important conservation issues, individuals and organisations to give a voice to the voiceless.

Kate On Conservation Description

www. kateonconservation.com

The goal when I started this blog was to be a campaigner and educator, spreading the word on things I felt weren’t receiving the coverage they should have been, and to inspire younger people to take an interest in the need for environmental and wildlife conservation.

By admitting my own misconceptions and ignorance at times (I’ve visited SeaWorld, petted a lion, seen elephants perform in Indonesia…), I have hopefully struck a different note, a passive voice who speaks from experience, but has now become knowledgeable enough to trust: and my blog follows that journey into knowledge and education.

I began blogging in 2011, as part of a university course, which required that I create four different types of post during the semester. I was asked, when I pitched my idea to the class, whether there would be enough to write about on the topic of conservation to fill the semester. Six years later, I continue to write regular updates on the site, have met some of my biggest idols and inspirations to discuss world-changing issues, and have done my best to spread the word on compassionate conservation; that is, to use cases and examples of individuals to promote a bigger conservation message.

Brilliant to join the Wild Zone's 'Should Nature Work For Us?' Panel talk at Bird Fair this weekend, alongside fellow conservationists and bloggers James Miller, Beth Jennings, Bella Lack, Alex White and Georgia Locock. Thanks so much to Dominic Dyer for organising! And to all the lovely people who came along to listen (and took these lovely photos that I pinched 😊)! Great to see some friendly faces in the crowd! X

After hearing all about the Javan rhino from Mark Carwardine at the Remembering Wildlife talk at Rutland Bird Fair, this was a fascinating read. Thank you for sharing Bella Rebell. X

Such a wonderful weekend at Rutland Bird Fair! So many brilliant, inspiring people to mention, tons of photos to sort and many messages of thanks to send... but for now, I need some quality, relaxed time with the little lady 💖! Here she is meeting the fox at the Wild Zone! Xx 🦊

After feeling terribly ill all week, I've finally worked up the energy to put together my presentation for BirdFair! Yay! Early start tomorrow as I journey to Rutland Water, and I can't wait! Don't forget, if you want to see the fascinating panel talk 'Should Nature Work For Us?' -- chaired by Dominic Dyer, where I'll be joining a bunch of brilliant young conservationists (James Miller, Alex White, Georgia Locock, Bella Lack and Beth Jennings) to debate the issue, come along to the Wild Zone at 1pm on Sunday. Hopefully see lots of you there! xx

Today, I really want to share with you this absolutely beautiful book! “The Magic of Hope”. It's an absolutely stunning photography book; the second by Matthew Copham, Pia Dierickx and Karin Van Couwenberg. It is self-published to allow all proceeds to go to the Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots Foundation and Save the Elephants Foundation.
The book is filled with messages of hope from politicians, writers, royalty and conservationists and has a wonderful foreword written by Dr. ...Jane Goodall.
Karin says: "Our project begins from children's drawings in Africa and Europe depicting their view of wildlife, to messages of hope from conservationists and iconic individuals throughout the world together with our photographs.
Through “The Magic of Hope” we connect the purity and innocence of the next generations to the confidence and wisdom of generations present and past. There will be a day when all will admire the rhino, practice conservation and inhale the wilderness.
Embrace the beauty of our planet, our Earth and believe in Hope." 💚 . . . #compassion #inspiration #hope #wildlife #naturebook #newbook #heartwarming #naturebooks #nature #animallover #naturalhistory #reader #read #naturalhistorybook #book #animals #animallovers #booklovers #wildlifelover #booksofinstagram #bookworm #books

I'm so excited to be able to share this with you! In case you haven't heard of Wild Voices Project podcast, I really recommend having a look through the archive and giving them a listen! So many wonderful interviews and inspiring stories (including a chat with the late Alan Rabinowitz). For me, it's an absolute honour to be able to help out on a few episodes, the first of which has been shared this week! Please have a listen here to my chat with Dr Jane Goodall about Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots Program for this brilliant initiative. If you enjoy it, please share it with others who you think may be interested. Many thanks xxx

On Monday (6 August) I joined Vegan podcaster Evanna Lynch (aka Harry Potter’s Luna Lovegood) and one of my blog readers, the lovely Annabel Lever (who’s been helping out at the National Geographic Kids UK office this week), outside 10 Downing Street as @stae.org staff, trustees, volunteers and supporters gathered to deliver a petition to Prime Minister Theresa May calling for a ban on advertising and promotion of elephant-related tourist activities

Wow, please take some time to watch this wonderful new film from TRE Productions (Tania Rose Esteban) this #WorldElephantDay!
"There is a special way to communicate with her; not using sticks, no riding, no chains... I only use my VOICE -- this is the right way.

User

Please take a few moments to watch. These guys are doing great things for lions!

R.i.P Dr Alan Rabinowitz, a hero to jaguars.
In ancient Aztec mythology, the spirit of the jaguar is an indomitable, mystic force — the jaguar was see as the ‘master of animals’, and the spiritual lord of the powers of fertility in the natural world.
When I spoke to Dr Alan in August last year, he was part-way through a mission titled ‘Jaguar journey‘, to walk the spine of the Jaguar corridor he had personally secured for the big cats. While I’m terribly sad to hear that Alan... will not complete his journey, I strongly believe that his equally indomitable spirit lives on in the jaguars whose very existence depends on them freely walking those protected corridors to mate and diversify the species’ genetics. Perhaps it’s not hard to imagine that in many ways, his spirit has already touched all of the many pathways that span the Jaguar corridor.

Great to join the @stae_elephants team outside Downing Street today, as they delivered their petition to Theresa May, calling for a ban on adverts for tourist activities featuring elephants. #Mondaymotivation I love these amazing animals which represent real change! They are made from flip flops collected from beaches on Africa’s east coast. Here, flip flops wash up from Asia, where refuse systems in some countries are poor, causing flip flops (many people’s primary form of shoe) to end up in the rivers and, eventually, the sea. These incredible animal sculptures are not only making use of the thousands of flip flops collected each year, but they're also raising vital awareness of the environmental impact of the non-biodegradable footwear.

Rare footage: A wild snow leopard mother and her small cub were filmed by a remote-sensor camera trap as they took an excursion down from the high peaks into a narrow valley. Globally, it is thought that only between 4,000 and 7,500 of these endangered big cats remain.

So excited about this. Massive congratulations to Margot Raggett! And Ian Redmond, who I know worked on this project

😯 Most of the plastic food containers that householders wash out after use and put in the recycling bin cannot actually be recycled, it has emerged...

Wow, amazing to understand songbirds a little more. This is the first time that another animal (aside from primates) has been shown to exhibit categorical perception of colour.
