Refugee Action last week published a short update to its July 2017 report on the Government's failure to supply the necessary asylum support to many asylum seekers.
For the report, Refugee Action analysed 162 applications for asylum support made between May 2017 and May 2018 through its projects in Birmingham, London and Manchester. The analysis showed that destitute people in the asylum system continue to struggle to obtain the support they desperately need and there has bee...n little concrete improvement since last year's report.

New guidance on immigration bail for judges of the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) was released last week by Judge Clements, President of the First-tier Tribunal.
The new guidance reflects the changes introduced by schedule 10 of the Immigration Act 2016, which made significant changes to immigration detention powers and saw a new status called "immigration bail" come into force on 15 January 2018.

Windrush children - We are offering free, half hour consultations, for those concerned about their position in the UK. We confirm that we will not make profit from these cases.
We will continue to lobby for fair treatment and remain grateful to the media outlets that have highlighted what has been a problem for many years and has been bought to the forefront by this government's 'hostile environment.'

Concerns have been growing over the treatment of members of the 'Windrush generation' who had not formalised their immigration status and who now find themselves victims of the Government's 'hostile environment' policy towards undocumented migrants.
If you are concerned about evidencing your immigration status and wish to make an application to verify accordingly - call our offices today.

The Migration Advisory Committee today published its interim update on EEA workers in the UK labour market.
JCWI's CEO Satbir Singh has responded to the report:
“Today’s MAC report is another piece of evidence demonstrating the failure in Theresa May’s immigration policy. Her obsession with creating a hostile environment for immigrants rings hollow alongside the stark evidence of the crucial roles migrants play in the economy. It’s clear, that the main challenge for a post-...Brexit Britain with an ageing population will be to attract more of the migrants that keep our NHS and economy running
“This will require a complete rethink of this Government’s handling of immigration. Currently the system is a cruel shambles administered by an incompetent and underfunded Home Office. If we are to ensure that the immigration system works for the people and the economy of the UK we need to transform it with simpler rules, fast and efficient processes and a fair and transparent Home Office. This is a mammoth task, but one that needs to begin today.”

Key Case Alert: B (Algeria) (Respondent) v Secretary of State for the Home Department (Appellant) [2018] UKSC 5:
The Supreme Court considered in this case, whether there exists a power under the Immigration Act 1971, to grant immigration bail to a person who can no longer be lawfully detained.
The Secretary of State suggested in this appeal, that a purposive interpretation of the relevant legislation should apply so that bail is available regardless of whether the individual ...is lawfully detained or would hypothetically be lawfully detained.
The Supreme Court unanimously dismissed the appeal and held that the Court was required to interpret the statutory provisions strictly and restrictively.
The Court found considerable modern authority which supported the Court of Appeal’s statement of principle that the power to grant bail presupposes the existence of and the ability to exercise the power to detain lawfully.
