Labour And Wait Description
We believe in a simple, honest approach to design, where quality and utility are intrinsic.
From hardware to clothing we offer a selection of timeless products that celebrate functional design and which are appropriate in a traditional or contemporary environment.
We have assembled a carefully curated collection of new and vintage items, some of them familiar, others waiting to be discovered. These everyday classics will not date but will mellow with age and are destined to become favourites.

As if reading our lengthy product descriptions on the website wasn’t enough, we have an ever-expanding library of books related to East London, London in general, and others of specific and peculiar interest to us.
An enamel milk pot defying gravity. A magic product! And one we’ve supplied for nearly 18 years. Made sustainability in the foothills of the Austrian Alps. This colour is just for us, too.
A dollop of the East End in the West; our Dover Street Market London space has been topped up with new items- in particular some vintage 1960s canvas bomber ’battledress’ jackets.
New in, for the modern ‘flaneur’; this fascinating book explores the stories and history which lie behind the myriad curiosities found in London. @ Labour and Wait
Back in stock, this handmade Swedish soap. It’s made from all natural ingredients, including organic oatmeal, essential oils and Sea Buckthorn. The latter is well known for its beneficial and calming effect on sensitive skin. The 'no-nonsense' packaging is made from environmentally friendly paper. It’s also a pretty hefty bar, so we recommend the slightly larger Japanese soap dish to keep it in order! @ Labour and Wait Workroom
Just when you thought it was safe to close the shed door... new colours now available in Trusco toolboxes, only in our Workroom or over the telephone. Not at our Shoreditch shop unfortunately!
Richard here giving some ‘backseat’ advice on how to arrange products in our display box. He’s been at Labour and Wait for over ten years now, so you’d think he knows what he’s talking about...

From the outset, there was only one typeface in our minds for Labour and Wait: Gill Sans.
These classic letterforms were designed by Eric Gill and first appeared around 1928. For us, Gill Sans perfectly embodies a graphic simplicity; clear, informative and timeless. Naturally, our choice was influenced by the iconic covers of the first Penguin books.
Gill Sans was also widely used for industrial supply catalogues from the 1930s through to the 1950s, which we enjoy collecting. In addition, we appreciate traditional stationery such as rubber stamps, embossed cards and school exercise books. We like to reference all this material in our branding.
