Carnival Day today, looks like it's going to be a scorcher, the ice cream is chilled If you need to cool off the aquarium tanks are chilled down to 15 °C so we're a great place to visit after a few hours in the sun.

Our lobster hatchery is up and running for the 2018 season. This morning we arrived to 500 baby lobsters in the maternity unit, these have been transferred to their grow out kreisel, where they will spend a number of weeks during their planktonic form (stages 1 to 3) before being moved to the Hive when they moult into a stage 4 lobster, this is when they move to the sea bed and develop further into a stage 6 lobster which is their adult form. They will spend a number of weeks in the Hive fattening up before being released back into the wild.

Krill cropped up a few times yesterday. Krill makes up the bottom of the food chain in the polar regions, technology has advanced in fishing that allows humans to harvest fantastic amounts of krill from huge factory ships, this highly nutritious "shrimp" is then added to pet food and used as an omega 3 supplement for humans. With Climate change also effecting the range of krill due to reduced ice coverage we might be in line for a large scale catastrophe in the polar regions.

User

Every time you take Omega 3 supplement your pinching food from a Blue Whale. Patrica from the American Museum of Natural History guides us through their hall of ocean life.

Wonderful aquarium, bigger than I thought, the staff are friendly and helpful, my girls aged 12 - 5 really enjoyed it, the ladies in the café where really helpful and accommodating to our needs, will definitely be coming back!!

User

We were on holiday in Cumbria, and were advised to go here with our 3 year old. She absolutely loved it. It was an amazing day out for our family. Would highly recommend coming here. The staff are very friendly, helpful and lovely people. Our daughter is autistic and didn’t get bored once. We went twice in one day as the ticket allows you to come and go as you please

User

We had a fantastic day today at the aquarium. Both our kids loved seeing all the different displays, my daughter and husband loved being able to touch the stingrays and at the rock pool. There are very few centers like this where you can really get hands on and enjoy the experience fully. My son loved the wave he would have watched it all day!! We drove down from Annan and it was well worth it, and well worth the money. As a family of 4 we would all recommend the aquarium, the staff were all very friendly and very knowledgeable when asked lots of questions. Great day out.

Was in for a prebooked Christmas dinner today with my family.

The service throughout was fantastic and very friendly.

We had our table trimmed with tablecloth...candles...crackers... and glasses....

We didnt wait long for our delicious starters to come out.

Bless the girls. They know me from my many visits and i am a tricky customer to cater for. I am gluten and lactose intollerant... and have many other allergies. Unfortunately i had forgot to mention that i am also allergic to tomato. The soup of the day was tomato and basil so again was a no go.... haha i went with the pate as the lactose is more pleasant of the symptoms to suffer if that makes sense.... i didnt eat it all for that reason but what i did eat was beautiful. My two children enjoyed their prawn cocktails and my husband his tomato soup... he prefers a chunky soup whereas i like the thinner... each to their own eh!!!

We were soon served our massive platefuls of christmas dinner. Mine was all gluten free..and my own gravy boat...very much appreciated...my husband got my pig in blanket as i am allergic to pork (told you...awkward) everything was delicious. We took what my daughter didnt eat home in a takeaway box. Too good to waste!

My daughter was too full for pudding but i had the gluten free sticky toffee pudding with dairy free custard. Beautiful. Im not a lover of either but id definitely have these again! My husband devoured his chocolate loaf and custard and my son said the apple pie with ice cream was one of the best he has ever eaten....

We had the best treatment throughout our almost 2 hour meal.... the girls all done an absolutely fantastic job for us and we greatly appreciate all their hard work! We visited on the 22nd at 1pm and please send over our thanks to all who were on that shift!!! We come every year for a dinner and will definitely see you next year!

User

Visited yesterday and it's a Great place. Our little girl loved it here. The food in the cafe is lovely and reasonably priced. We will definitely be back. Next timw when the weather's abit better so we can have a proper look at the things outside aswell

User

Visited today with my twin boys aged 9. One of whom has autism. Very good carers rates for admission. Super helpful ladies on the desk. A great aquarium lots too see. Game of crazy golf included. Fab swing park at the back. Cafe with wee dog friendly outdoor area. A great day out.

User

Took our 4 boys aged from 10 to 3. We all had a fantastic time and great fun seeing all the animals. Learning loads as we go. The dome aquarium was brilliant, but stroking the stingrays was incredible. The adventure playground is perfect to blow off steam after all the excitement of the aquarium. We will be going again and again. Crazy golf. A walk round the harbour. The new lighthouse. Remote controlled boats. Too much to list, but the special spawning aquarium is a fantastic addition. Worth every penny.

User

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the aquarium. Marvellous day out had by all.

The Lake District Coastal Aquarium at Maryport may be small, but the staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the displays give a great insight into the British coastal environment. The new lab exhibit with its tanks of hatchlings was fascinating (and cute!). The rays showing off to get extra treats at feeding time was particularly memorable!

User

Myself and my son had a day out at the aquarium today. We visit quite often, which is quite a feat in itself as we spent 5 hours on the train from newcastle each time but it is completely worth it. Absolutely love the aquarium and we spend ages in there! There is such a variety of marine life from our own coasts which I especially love, and the new lab is amazing and something you don't really get to see in other aquariums, totally reasonably priced as you can go around as much as you like and so is the cafe!!! Love the gift shop also, always a great variety. Thanks again for a fab day and I'm sure we will be back soon

User

My family and i are on holiday from suffolk. We visited this place and loved it the staff was nice helpful and welcoming would recommend it to anyone for the people and the fish. Top marks in our books if we are in this part of the country again we will be back

User

Lovely place. We have the annual pass & it's a great place for us & the kids, whatever the weather. There's always something new to see or different to learn. The cafe is a real plus after a stroll along the beach (especially with the log burner in the colder months!); and the gift shop has some beautiful bits (not badly priced either) as well as little bits for the kids

User

I would like to thank the staff from the Harbourside cafe for their help and kind wishes today at a family birthday. So nice of the staff to give our mam a birthday card, she is a regular visitor to the cafe and has made friends with the staff. Thank you x

User

I visited today with my sons and sister. My little boy has sensory processing disorder and suspected autism. He had a meltdown half way around. A lovely member of staff helped me calm him and took him around some of the displays really lifting him mood. Thank you so much for going to that extra mile and helping me and him so much. Sometimes you can feel so judged and she was so helpful and kind it was refreshing and has left me extremely grateful.

User

Had a really enjoyable visit to the aquarium. So much to see and kept my almost 4 year old entertained for 3 hours and probably longer if we had arrived earlier. Loved the little touches like providing step stools for the kids and a quiz. Next time we will visit on a nicer day weather wise and enjoy the outside bits too. Had a quick look in the shop and prices seemed good as was the price of ice cream £1.35 for a single scoop).

It's not a huge place but it's really friendly and has plenty to see.

Also thanks for letting my son do the hoovering at closing time!

User

Great place to drop in very educational and the new hatchery is brilliant

User

Great little aquarium and fab cafe! Lovely cakes I would happily go just for the cafe xx

User

Great day out. Well worth the admission price! My toddler LOVED the rock pool & ray pool. Really interesting talks along with the feeding!

Will definitely return again

User

A really REALLY good day out for all ages. The lobster nursery and the microscopes are AMAZING and the Ray pool is a wonderful experience. The staff are helpful and friendly and the cafe more than exceeded expectation. We shall most definetly be back.
