Wednesday evening was given over to a New Zealand #wine #tasting. Fifteen wines from all across this delightful land were opened for our tasters to assess and enjoy. There were a trio of #SauvignonBlanc, of course, with more variety and distinction than you might expect. Things got classy, though, with the airy elegance of Felton Road's Bannockburn #Chardonnay and a taste through the whole #KumeuRiver range of superlative Chardonnays. A brace of oily #Riesling including (...for me) the star wine of the night from the quirky and #organic #Waipara estate of Tongue in Groove. Perceptions were challenged by the second Tongue in Groove offering - their 'natural' 'orange' Little Stomper, a somewhat bizarre but interesting Pinot Gris/Gewurztraminer blend. The tasting was wrapped up by five elegant #PinotNoir that proved, once again, that NZ is one of the best places in the world for this most supreme of grape varieties. Our informal wine tasting evenings are a must for the enthusiastic imbiber. Why not pop along and see us and get yourself on our mailing list. You wouldn't want to miss the next one...

Just to say, we shall be closed on Bank Holiday Monday. Everyone needs a day off sometime.

It may interest you know when your favourite #wine shop will be open and not over the upcoming Easter weekend. Essentially open as normal apart from Good Froday and Easter Monday when we shall remain closed. Seems fair.

Last night's Côte Chalonnaise #wine #tasting was a chance for our gang of Chiswick oenophiles to explore this slightly less well-known region of #Burgundy. And all the wines on the night sung and proffered forth the comforting reality that good Burgundy is still just about affordable. The inspiration for the tasting were the #wines from Domaine Dureuil-Janthial, new to L&S and probably the best wines made in #Rully. Vincent Dureuil's 'basic' #Bourgogne Blanc 2016 (not actu...ally from the Côte Chalonnaise but from a small plot of vines in Puligny Montrachet) was an absolute hit - flavourful, with aromatic fruit and delightful freshness of spirit - and a steal at £23.50; his white Rullys impressed too, but the Bourgogne had VFM on its side. A long-time favourite with L&S, Rully 1er cru Pucelle 2017 Jacqueson, showed why it's a favourite with some many of our customers - at once bright and fresh, but also rich and toasty, and only £27.95 a bot. Vincent Dureuil, once again, amazed on the red front with his Rully 2016 (£31.50) - so pure but also juicy and mineral with crunchy blueberry fruit, joyous. The tasting was rounded off with some luxury in the shape of #Mercurey 1er cru Champ Martin 2010 Bruno Lorenzon (£37.95) which was bold, rich and deep, quite sexy. There were 12 wines on show and none disappointed. But, then again, what would you expect at L&S? To join us for our tasting evenings, you should get yourself onto our mailing list - all we need is a name and an e-mail address (which will not be shared with any other company, no matter how carefully selected). We'll keep you up to date on our #tastings here in #Chiswick but also the grander L&S tasting up town, not to mention offers and temptations of the vinous sort. How can you refuse?

Feeling the need for something a bit special on the #Champagne front? Among the myriad of great #fizz on the shelves at L&S we have secured a small quantity of Champagne #Gosset's very limited edition Gosset 15.
Gosset, one of the claimants to the title of oldest Champage House, make truly wonderful Champagnes with elegance and depth. Their Champagnes do not go through malolactic fermentation, thereby retaining their natural freshness. They also eschew the use of too much ...reserve wine, preferring to keep a more natural fresh feel rather than masking any bumps with older wines. We have sold the delightful rich and fruit filled (strawberry, red fruits and ripe peaches) Grande Réserve for many a year, and have been wowed by the deeply endowed Rosé this Summer too.
But the Gosset 15 moves things to a new and wonderful level. 60% Chardonnay 40% Pinot Noir; cellered in 1999, the crucial part is that the wine is then aged fifteen years on its lees before disgorgement. Fifteen years!
Gosset’s signature ripe palate is there, maybe a touch more butter and touch less red fruit with slightly higher proportion of Chardonnay but the layered yeasty/toffee/honey rich character of age is the striking thing.
It's thoughtful Champagne for sipping reverently (not too reverently, mind, you need to enjoy it), and a great present for a special friend. At £82.50 it's a little spenny (as the youngsters say these days) so your mid-week cheeky Prosecco isn't under threat, but compare it with the Préstige Cuvées of this world - Dom at £150, Krug at £145, and the comparable Bollinger RD 2004 at £175 - and it looks a little like a bargain. Best find something to celebrate.

Last night's #Loire Valley #wine #tasting was fun. We had 15 wines to show with a more or less even split between white and red. And one pink, which was the rather lovely #Sancerre Rosé 2016 from Domaine Delaporte - an extra year's bottle age has softened it into a charming strawberry/raspberry charmer with some noticable #Pinot Noir characters poking through. Delaporte's white and red Sancerres were also rather splendid, as was the ever reliable Chateau de Tracy Pouilly F...umé. But the stand out white was a ringer from South Africa (it's a Chenin Blanc, that's a sort of Loire connection...?) the awesome, rich, lush and enveloping Demorgenzon Reserve Chenin - ooh mamma! Aside from two excellent Sancerre Pinot Noirs, there was a quartet of #CabernetFranc from #Chinon and #Bourgueil with Bernard Baudry's Clos Guillot just about emerging as the favourite red. You should probably come to one of our tastings - they're rather jolly. We could, with an e-mail address, pop you on our mailing list; or you could follow us on Facebook or Twitter; or pop in to the shop and grill us for details. Cheers peeps.
