Redditch United F.C. - Match Preview
Brakes travel to Redditch for their first game of pre season 2019. Redditch play in the Southern League Central Premier Division and finished 15th last season, but manager Paul Smith departed at the end of the season to take up the vacant Halesowen Town manager position, causing the Reds to hire ex-Brakes assistant manager Ian King. King started his time at the Trico Stadium at the start of May, and has since lost over 8 players who have f...ollowed Paul Smith to Halesowen and Richard Batchelor who has signed for Mickleover Sports.
Paul Holleran has managed to keep nearly the whole of last season’s squad, only losing Ahmed Obeng. The new recruits so far for the Brakes are Josh March, Reece King, Kaiman Anderson and Cieron Keane. Brakes returned to pre season training on Wednesday 26 June, and also trained in the sweltering heat on Saturday morning. Volunteers have been busy at the Phillips 66 Community Stadium throughout the pre season period, helping to clean and get the ground ready for the new season. A new away fans bar has also been constructed along with many other maintenance issues around the ground being resolved.
The Brakes have faced Redditch many times since 2000, mostly in the Southern League Premier in the 2010s. The first game was a friendly in 2001, as Redditch ran out 2-0 winners on their home patch. The clubs would not face off for another 10 years though, as the Brakes navigated their way up the football pyramid to the Southern League Premier, and 10 years and 18 days since the last meeting both teams played out a 1-1 draw, with James Husband scoring his first of four goals that season in that match. The most memorable game for Brakes fans between the two sides was most definitely the Play Off Semi Final in 2016, with Courtney Baker-Richardson scoring late into injury time to send the game to extra time, and with the scores still deadlocked after 30 extra minutes, Tony Breeden came out as the hero of the day, saving two penalties and scoring one himself as the Brakes came out on top after penalty kicks.
Here’s to the new season, Come on you Brakes,
Max

Paul Holleran's squad building for the 2019/2020 season is almost complete, with Joe Clarke and Ben Newey the latest players to commit for the new season.
'I'm delighted that Joe is back on board,' said the Brakes manager. 'He has played a big part in helping to stabilise the club in the National League North over the last two seasons, and is a very experienced player who knows his way around the pitch. He's got a voice on and off the pitch and I'm delighted that he's back with us next season.
'Young Ben is a local lad who is showing great potential, and I think in time and with a bit of experience he could have the makings of a good non league goalkeeper.'

TRANSFER NEWS: Ahmed bids farewell but Brakes welcome Keane.
Paul Holleran has announced that he has reluctantly agreed to let Ahmed Obeng leave the club, while making another new signing for the coming season in Cieron Keane.
‘Sadly Ahmed’s time at the club has come to an end,’ said the Brakes boss. ‘He lives in Wolverhampton, and he’s got to the stage now where he’s finding the commute difficult. He’s got different circumstances at home and with his work - we had a chat la...st year but we managed to persuade him to stay again. Being honest he’s done great for us and we’ve had a good three years out of him but he wants to be nearer home, so he’ll sign for a club nearer to his home and maybe drop down a league but we wish him all the best, we’ve enjoyed working with him. I’m sad to see him go, but these things happen in football. He signed off on a great note with us. He’s been a good squad player for us, had some good little runs in the team; we’ve had some important moments with him - he’s always done well in the Senior Cup for us, and certainly his pace enabled us to stretch teams and get in behind. He’s a good kid and we’ve enjoyed having him at Leamington.’
On his latest new arrival Keane, Holleran said ‘Cieron is a lad that we’ve had a chat with before. He had a difficult time last season with one thing and another but he’s been working very hard in the close season and is raring to go. We are looking forward to having him at the club. He’s a good age - 22 - and can play in a number of positions and with him being left footed he will be a good addition to the squad.’
Nottingham born, Cieron ended last season in the Northern Premier League with Basford United as he worked his way back to full fitness following an injury hit campaign that began at our National League North rivals Boston United.
