About Leicestershire Secondary Scitt Teacher Training

School based teacher training leading to PGCE and QTS. You learn to teach in the best place to train - in schools, with teachers and at your own pace.

Leicestershire Secondary Scitt Teacher Training Description

We are delighted to welcome you to the Leicestershire Secondary School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme based at Rushey Mead Teaching School, the accredited provider. Rushey Mead School and its school partners have a longstanding tradition of engagement in Initial Teacher Training. It is an outstanding school; well placed to orchestrate the training of our next generation of teachers with an Alliance led SCITT.

The Leicestershire Secondary SCITT is a dynamic partnership between a large group of good and outstanding schools, mostly within Leicester City whose combined experience and close relationships will allow excellent practice and the most recent innovations to be shared with trainees. Working together, we have developed an effective, school based teacher training programme which is both supportive and responsive. It has been designed by and will be delivered by outstanding practitioners with current, relevant classroom experience.

We are confident that our partnership schools offer a variety of contexts in which trainee teachers will be able to develop the necessary competences to meet the challenges of teaching effectively in a secondary school and we have every confidence in our ability to help trainees to meet the challenges ahead, to take up their first teaching post and enjoy a successful and rewarding teaching career.

Completion of the programme leads to a PGCE validated by the University of Leicester and the award of Qualified Teacher Status to enable trainees to progress onto their first post in teaching as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).

For graduates with the ambition to become reflective, well informed teachers, able to achieve outstanding in their teaching practice, the SCITT offers the ideal environment for initial teacher training.

You CAN train as a teacher, even if your qualifications are not right…
Each year we receive hundreds of applications through UCAS and a great number of them are not YET ready to progress onto teaching.
This, however, does not mean that you cannot teach, simply that you have a few steps to take before you CAN train as a teacher.
... Let me give you an example...

Training to be a Teacher – Things you should know…
It is hard work and very tiring, but you get to meet the most amazing people when training…
You realise that small things are actually the really important things – the hello as someone walks in your class, asking someone if they are okay when they are not their usual self, checking how their weekend went when you know they were nervous about something…
... You will love some days and won’t believe that you are paid to do this job. But, there will be other days when you go home and wonder why you are putting yourself through this...

Teaching is changing… and it is for the better!
There has been a large shift in thinking in teaching, which has been solidified by the ‘Teacher Workload Reduction Toolkit‘.
This paradigm shift is slowly cascading down all tiers of schools. It will continue to do so until this is the profession that we all hope it will be and think it should be...

How does the teacher training course work...?
Our course is split into 4 key areas that develop you into an expert teacher:
1) Working with your Lead Subject Tutor ... 2) Professonal Learning sessions 3) School Placements 4) PGCE
1) you work with our amazing subject specialists, who are on hand to show what it means to be a great teacher in your subject. They build on the teaching pedagogy you learn and show you how you teach to an incredible level in your subject area. They have built a specialised programme that develops you into a powerful, skilled and knowledgeable teacher that has a great impact.
2) Professional Learning sessions shown you the basics of teaching - how to assess, use questioning, plan lessons, deal with behaviour and much, much more...
You learn all the skills needed to teach and then you take these into school, observe teachers demonstrating them before having a go yourself.
3) SCITT is all about schools (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) and so you get extensive time in schools. You watch your expect mentors deliver lessons and together unpick what it means to do the job. Then you have a go and begin honing your skill as a practising teacher.
4) PGCE - alongside your QTS, you also earn your PGCE. you learn how the theory of teaching impacts on your practice, you become research informed and learn the skills that allow you to blend theory and practice to become a really impactful teacher.
We are really proud of what we do and know it works. Our trainees tell us so, our schools tell us so, 100% employment in the last 4 years tells us so...
