Letchworth Salvation Army Description

We are a Christian organisation dedicated to bringing the message of Salvation through Jesus Christ. Our ministry is strictly Scripture based, and incorporates music, song and drama.

Letchworth Garden City was founded in 1903 by Ebeneezer Howard, was one of the first new towns, and is the world’s first garden city. Built on quaker principles, the town was “dry”, no alcohol was served in any public houses. Indeed, the “Skittles Inn”, opened around 1907, was known as the “pub with no beer”.

During January 2005 “Sollershot Circus” (to give it its formal name) in Letchworth Garden City was recognised as having the first roundabout on a public road in the United Kingdom, dating from circa 1909.

The Salvation Army have been active in Letchworth since 1913, originally meeting in the Co-operative hall in Leys Avenue. Meetings were then held at a hut in Norton Way North. The present hall was built in 1936
