Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI) is a UK-registered charity fighting to end acid violence globally.
In 2017, ASTI were invited by the UK Home Office to contribute to the consultation process on what legislative changes were needed in the UK to tackle the growing issue of acid attacks. A team of Linklaters lawyers were then tasked with rapidly producing a comprehensive memo on the specific legislative amendments needed.
ASTI have been using our research as a powerful... tool to help influence a series of policy changes which were introduced throughout 2018.

What does the clerkship entail? The clerkship provides students with an invaluable opportunity to gain an in depth look into two practice areas at Linklaters. During my clerkship, I spent two weeks in the Capital Markets team and two weeks in the Corporate team. During my time in the two seats, I experienced what it was like to be a lawyer at a global firm, and how the unique principal-trainee model works. In addition, the clerkship involves numerous training sessions which are designed to educate you on other areas of the firm and to build your commercial awareness. Finally, through socials and (many) coffee meetings, the clerkship allows participants to foster close connections with people from around the world.
What were the main highlights? One of the main highlights for me was experiencing what it is like to work on a matter that involves so many different countries. Whilst I was at Linklaters, I worked on matters based in Greece, Turkey and Ireland. As an Australian, this was really eye opening and expanded my knowledge on European politics, economies and cultures. Further, spending 4 weeks in the UK with clerks from Australia, India and Africa was truly amazing; we developed close friendships that will last a lifetime!
What tips would you give to prospective applicants? In your application, try and identify what exactly makes you different from other applicants and therefore an invaluable resource for Linklaters. Linklaters really values commercial acumen and diversity, so try and discern experiences of your own that parallel those values. It is also important to think about why you want to move to London and how Linklaters fits into your future career plans. If successful in obtaining an interview, be aware that a component of the interview involves testing your commercial awareness. I would suggest learning what each team at Linklaters does so that you can identify how each group can be mobilised in a transaction to achieve the best results for clients. See the Chambers Student website for a run down on each practice group in a law firm. Finally, be yourself! Linklaters values individuality so I would strongly recommend being honest and authentic in your interviews.

Our 2019 Australian Clerkship applications have just opened!
Sarah Ward, who was on last years Clerkship has answered a few questions about her time on the scheme. Read on to find out more and apply now here: https://bit.ly/2svucZ8
Q1: What does the Clerkship entail?... My experience clerking at Linklaters was incredible. The clerkship was four weeks in total allowed clerks the opportunity to gain insight into two practice group areas. My first rotation was in Employment & Incentives, followed by my second rotation in the Mainstream Corporate (Mergers & Acquisitions) team. Throughout the clerkship program, it was apparent that Linklaters was committed to investing in our learning and development. There were a plethora of training sessions provided on the various teams within the firm, along with practical skill-building sessions.
Q2: What were the main highlights? The clerkship program was packed with challenging and stimulating work alongside fun social events that allowed us the opportunity to get to know London better and the other clerks. These socials saw us attending the theatre, stealing the crown jewels in a thrilling Escape Room, trying our hand at cooking, Christmas parties, ice-skating at Somerset House and more. Another highlight was the exposure I gained to the breadth and nature of work undertaken at Linklaters. In my first few days at the firm, I was listening to Brexit discussions from the top legal minds in the industry and working on my first ever multinational deal!
Q3: What tips would you give to prospective Australian applicants? Upon reflection, there were three main steps I took, which placed me in good stead throughout the application process. First, I attended the Linklaters Roadshow, which was held in the Allens Melbourne office. While these events may seem daunting, they are the perfect opportunity to speak with representatives from the firm and will help you in determining if you are a fit for Linklaters and importantly, whether Linklaters is a fit for you. Second, I conducted extensive research. You will need to display commercial awareness in both your written application and in the interview. One way you could do this is through reading financial news and keeping abreast of transactions involving the firm. I subscribed to two Linklaters blogs; EmploymentLinks and FintechLinks. These blogs continue to be of interest to me and contain industry and firm specific developments. Third, back yourself. Be confident in your preparations and show the interviewers how you think.
We will be in Sydney and Melbourne in March, to sign up to our roadshow, click here: https://bit.ly/2EPUjhv

Last night, we wrapped up LGBT History Month 2019 with an incredible talk by The Reverend Richard Coles. An early face on London’s ‘alternative gay scene’ and a Church of England priest, there are not many people who can give such an interesting perspective on LGBT history in the UK.
Richard came of age in London during the heady disco days of the 70s and 80s, a time of great social, cultural and political upheaval. While once best known for being one half of the chart-toppi...ng band, The Communards and a voice for marginalised youth, he later found a home in the Christian church, which to many seemed like an unusual transition. “Christianity served the parts of me that armoured activism neglected,” he explained.
Richard’s talk was peppered with hilarious and profound anecdotes from his life as an 80s pop star, gay activist and now, a man of faith. While it was uplifting to hear about all the progress he has witnessed in his lifetime, he is only too aware of the institutionalised prejudices that still exist within the religion he calls home. While an exemplar for many things, his story is above all a fascinating insight into the complex nature of identity and how seemingly incongruous tensions can exist within all of us.
