Lisa Smith Counselling Description

Choosing any kind of therapy is difficult, but when it comes to emotional issues; not only are there lots of options but the selection process becomes more complex because we are in a place in which we feel venerable, anxious and maybe even confused. There are times when we can find life challenging – we may feel overwhelmed, feel down or stuck in repeating patterns of negative behaviour. Emotional turmoil can be brought on by a current crisis, persistent long term problems, depression, anxiety, difficulty in relationships or other emotional problems. For our own protection we often bury or deny what it is we are feeling, these suppressed emotions then form the blocks or filters through which we live our lives and limit our true potential.

Emotional Therapy holds the premise that the spirit and emotion are of equal importance to the mind and body. It differs from counselling in rather than simply using the mind to analyse symptoms, it seeks to promote healing of the original wounds or blocks by working through the feelings and emotions, looking at the connection between past events and current feelings can bring about a greater understanding, leading to increased personal strength.

Emotional therapy uses the ‘inner child model’. As a child we learn that certain behaviour is deemed unacceptable, we learn that certain types of behaviour will create a certain kind of response from family, peers and culturally, we learn to adapt and suppress our feelings. An example of this could be, what happened when you got angry when you were little? Did you get sent to your room? were you hit?, Now think about what happens now when you’re angry, do you bottle it up adding to it when something upsets you further only to explode later? Get angry at someone else instead of who has upset you? Looking at and nurturing our inner child can show us emotional patterns that are effecting our lives enabling us to be aware of our triggers and our emotional wellbeing.

Using a variety of skills and techniques Emotional Therapy helps clients uncover, explore and express feelings in a safe, supportive environment. This process helps to heal the emotional pain and brings a sense of liberation and personal growth. Emotional Therapy is a person centered therapy. Feedback from clients suggest that Emotional Therapy can help clients develop a better understanding of who they are, their desires, needs, attitudes, feelings and behaviours and how these are negatively affected. It aims to help clients develop their true positive potential.
