About Little Valley Animal Shelter, Exeter (Rspca)

Registered Charity No: 205154

Little Valley Animal Shelter, Exeter (Rspca) Description

Little Valley Animal Shelter is owned and run by the South, East and West Devon Branch of the RSPCA and is located on the outskirts of Exeter. The Shelter, founded in 1991, supports the work of local RSPCA inspectors by caring for and rehoming over 1000 of the neediest animals from our local area every year.

Little Valley’s running costs are in the region of £10, 000 per week and, although we are proud to be affiliated with the RSPCA, sadly we receive no automatic funding and we therefore have to rely totally on local support from our own community to fund our vital animal welfare work.

All animals stay at the Shelter until they are adopted into caring, responsible homes. A homechecker visits every prospective owner and follow-up checks are made to ensure the animal is well and settled.

The Shelter can accept a wide variety of animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, aviary birds, farm animals and equines. We also hold wildlife, pending their transfer to RSPCA West Hatch in Taunton.

Animals are only put to sleep on veterinary advice or because of incurable behavioural problems.

Did you know we have an Amazon Wish List for the dogs in our care? Why not take a look at what our dogs would like. You could make their stay even happier while they wait for their forever homes 😊 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/ls/ref=cm_ wl_rlist_go_o…

Pippa is looking for a new family, could this be with you?

Before visiting the Shelter, please take a look at the cats available for adoption on our website. If you see a cat you are interested in, call or pop into the Shelter during our opening hours to speak to a member of the cat team. We will then reserve the cat for you and arrange for all members of the family to meet before organising a home visit. We may ask for a cat flap, which we will usually ask to be fitted prior to adopting the cat.
All cats are microchipped prior to adoption. Adult cats are also neutered prior to adoption. Neutering vouchers will be issued for kittens.
Adoption fee: £60 (cats) / £70 (kittens)

The other day some volunteers from our Budleigh Shop came along to the Shelter to receive their RSPCA Long Service Awards. Between them they have racked up 99 years' service! An incredible achievement - thank you to them for their support. Pictured here with Cliff Marshall (Area Retail Manager), Joe Currey (South Street Shop), Jo Evans (Shelter Manager), Phil Brush (Treasurer/Trustee) and Suzanne Pugh (Branch General Manager).

The current Miss Devon, Clara George, came to visit the Shelter yesterday. She is a huge animal lover and uses her blog and social media platforms to promote animal welfare - check her out on instagram.com/claraccouture or www.claraccouture.com. It was a pleasure to meet you Clara and to show you around - here she is pictured with our lovely old boy Snoop.

This gorgeous young girl is Salami - a beautiful sleek shiny female ferret who is ready to find her forever home. Salami was very shy when she first arrived at the shelter but with time and love she has started to really gain in confidence, and it is lovely watching her true ferretness blossom! This lovely lady is good with other ferrets and would love a home with an existing gentle ferret or two to be her companions. She is starting to learn how to play and once in a nic...e proper home she is going to be a little superstar of a ferret we're sure. She handles well and has the softest silkiest fur! Ideally her new family will have experience of ferrets so that they can help her settle in and lavish her with loads of love. Any children in the home would ideally be older teens, calm and used to ferrets and be understanding of her need for quiet as she adapts to her new home. Salami is the current favourite of our resident ferret enthusiast and we think whoever takes this little bundle of cuteness home will be very lucky indeed!

Hector is a 2 year old, very large Lurcher type in desperate need of a new home.
As a lot of you will know, Hector has been with us a while now and we have had a lot of people asking why he can’t share his home with other dogs, children or be left; so we would like to let you all know a bit more about Hector and his needs.
We would love for Hector to be able to live with other animals and children, if this was the case he would be happily in a home by now which is what we all... want for him. However, he does have some behavioural issues that mean this would not be safe. He will be a project, but if you have the time and patience to commit to him, you will have such a rewarding and fun loving companion in return!
Only dog and adult home:
• Hector will guard items he sees as valuable such as toys, food and often other items – due to his size (around a metre tall with all 4 feet on the floor!) he can reach a lot of items that the average dog can’t! Hector will guard from people as well as dogs and so needs to be the only pet. If approached when he has something he can display aggression, so he would be a risk to other pets and children in the home who may not pick up on his early signals. This behavioural issue can be managed and over time work can be done to improve this behaviour, however it is unlikely to completely resolve.
Separation anxiety:
• Hector loves people and finds being left alone distressing. He will need someone home throughout the day who is able to slowly and gradually introduce time left.
No cats or small furries:
• Hector has a high prey drive and will chase anything that runs.
Positives:
• He is clicker trained and responds very well to reward based training. Hector is bright and intelligent and he knows lots of commands – Sit, lie down, touch, play dead, in your bed, recall and wait.
• Enjoys meeting dogs out and about, but would be better suited walking with other medium/large dogs as he can be a little over enthusiastic at times!
• He enjoys interaction and fuss once he has got to know you.
• He is hilarious! He never fails to make us smile and is a firm favourite with all who meet him.
Hector will really benefit from a consistent routine so his days are predictable and he won’t have to worry about the unexpected. He settles well in his kennel and may benefit from an outside space such as a converted barn, play house or shed where he can have time and space to relax such as if his owners need to go out or when meals are being prepared.
Hector is a fantastic dog who in an understanding home will blossom! Despite his behavioural quirks, he is an amazing dog with bags of personality!
Please contact us if you think you have the right home for Hector, full advice on how to handle and work with Hector will be given. We also provide a free, lifetime behavioural support service for all of our adopters.

We visited Little Valley shelter last Saturday as a family to have a look at the cats they had up for adoption. The lady that showed us around was lovely and very knowledgeable about all the cats there. We shortlisted two, Bob and George. We were given plenty of time to meet them both. Although we loved them both we made a family decision that George was the lad for us. A home visit was arranged for first thing Monday morning and the beautiful George came home with us on Tuesday can't recommend Little Valley enough; we just wish we could've taken more home!

We have just adopted a lovely, energetic collie cross from Little Valley. He has only been home for a day, but he is already making himself well at home and is loving all of his cuddly toys and being close to the moors!

The adoption process was made so clear to us, with advice being offered for local training centres for nervous dogs. It is clear that the people working at little valley really love the animals they rescue and want the best family for each of the animals in their care!

I could not recommend any more how great it is to adopt an animal, and little valley made the whole experience great!

We got our boy Charlie from little Valley. If anyone has space, time and love for a furry friend then the team here are amazing! Helpful, friendly and genuinely caring.

User

We adopted our white boy Massen (previously Coconut) 2 weeks ago and they were fantastic. Would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking to adopt. Please adopt!

User

We adopted Mitch - a gorgeous 2 yr old black cat - 3 weeks ago. He has settled in and is so friendly and we all love him. It was hard choosing from all the lovely cats they have but he was definitely the one for us and we are glad he found a home with us !

User

We adopted Holly the labradoodle! And we couldn’t have got her from nicer, more helpful people. The receptionist was so lovely all the times I seen and spoke to her, the dog girls were also really lovely every time! She was obviously well looked after by you guys. She’s such a beautiful soul and we are so happy to have her in our family. Thank you guys!

User

We adopted Alaska a beautiful pure white cat, he is now called Aslan! I would not hesitate to adopt an animal from the RSPCA again, the entire experience was fantastic with the exception of not knowing what to expect with the home visit, but the gentleman that came out was very pleasant and we had a nice chat, just a shame I had made myself physically sick with worry about it, which I can now laugh at!! The staff at the centre gave us some great advice unfortunately I think Aslan listened in and decided out of pure devilment to do things his way instead, he is the first adult cat we have taken into our home and we are learning as we go, my other two cats adore Aslan and he enjoys playing with our younger cat, they have broken a few things and run around at the speed of lightning but no worries all in good fun. Yes I would recommend the RSPCA and will probably not buy again but rescue instead :) Well done Little Valley Animal Shelter :)

User

The best place to go, I think some people forget how many loving dogs there are that need homes!

We adopted tito today but I couldn't wait to get him home, the staff were truly amazing when it came to helping us find a dog suitable for my home, and I couldn't have thanked them enough for everything.

Thank you all so much xx

User

Thank you to everyone at Little Valley for taking such good care of Marcus before I met him and helping him to be the soppy character that he is. I’d recommend anyone looking for a special furby visits Little Valley - the staff are fantastic and obviously invest lots of time in ensuring that the those waiting to find their forever home get the best care and attention possible.

Puma has been with us 5 months and it's like he's been part of our family forever. Thank you.

User

Lovely staff, gave us plenty of time to get to know a suitable dog before bringing him home. We now have family member number 5! 24 hours in and it’s like he’s always been with us, thank you for all your support!

User

Lovely informative staff who made the whole process so easy and stress-free. Picked up "Hughie" who is now Bramble and couldn't be more pleased. Still going through the bonding process but looking really positive so far :D

User

Lovely Shelter, friendly helpful caring Staff. Thank you for Nibbles, Bonding with Thumper has started and seems to be going well. Nibbles has been out exploring her new living area. Once the pair have bonded Nibbles will be allowed out in the garden. I can see she has a very inquisitive nature.

Just over a week ago we adopted the amazing Terry. The whole adoption process was smooth and even the horrendous weather really didn’t get in the way. I know Terry had been at the shelter a long time so everyone was keen to see him placed in his forever home. He’s is a complete joy and has kept us amused and entertained ever since . He has settled really well considering the length of time he was at Little Valley. Our only regret is not finding Terry sooner. Thank you all for all that you did for him xxx

User

Adopted two lovely cats from Little Valley this week. What a wonderful place. The staff really know the animals so can make sure you take home those most suited to you (we already had an elderly cat at home to bear in mind). All the cats are well cared for and the shelter is lovely and clean. Thank you Little Valley Xxx

We went on Sunday to look in to adopting a small animal/animals. This was my first dealings with the RSPCA.

The receptionist on Sunday was awful, it took me three times to ask her if I could look at the small animals and I even ended up asking if I should go back and look on the Internet as she was not forthcoming and looked At me like I was an inconveimeance or wasting her time. I don't think she even cracked a smile through out my conversation with her. I had a friend with me, whom felt the rudeness from the receptionist and we both agreed if we felt any more uncomfortable we would leave. Luckily for us Anna came along to show us the small Animals. Anna was informative, friendly, and cracked a smile or ten!

The next day (bank holiday monday) I rang to adopt two little boys and there was another receptionist on. She was fantastic, and I believe she (Julie?) was in when I picked my boys up. Lots of smiles and a general appreciation of us coming in. Great Service! The lady whom brought my boys out was great too!

I have to say if it wasn't for the initial welcome (or lack off) I would have given 5 stars however i was very close to walking off. I hope that this receptionist was having just an off day.

I went to little valley to reserve a rabbit to be a companion for the rabbit I already have, I picked one out and then waited for my home check, home check was fine and they could see the rabbit would have the run of the garden, and the run of the garage at night with a hutch to hide in as well. After the home check they contacted me saying I needed to email them pictures of where each rabbit would be kept during the bonding process, my garden is an awkward size/shape to put some sort of temporary fence up so I borrowed a large dog cage and went back to the rspca saying the rabbits could take in turns one in the cage and one in the garden switched over during the day and could have contact through the bars. Although not ideal it would only be temporary. They weren't happy with that and wanted me to buy/build a hutch with a run for the bonding process! We all know how expensive hutches are and to spend that on something that would only be used for probably a maximum of 6 weeks is completely unreasonable! They said the bonding won't work with one rabbit in the cage and one running around the garden and that I can't have a rabbit stuck in a cage the whole time. I explained again that the rabbits could be switched over during the day and that I have previously successfully bonded rabbits, 2 female rabbits in fact! And had no problem. I've had to cancel my reserve on the rabbit. 1. I feel like they have wasted my time 2. They have lost that rabbit the chance of having a lovely home where he would be free to run around all day and not be stuck in a cage. Once the rabbits were bonded, at no point would that rabbit ever be locked in a cage, what more could the rspca possibly want for the rabbit?! And now I can see why they have so many stuck in there.

I called about Bronson twice and spoke on the phone a total of 3 times.

I told them that my current dog is around 12 years old, she can be slightly reactive towards certain dogs and that I had recently been through and am recovering from surgery (to point out that I couldn't be too hands on if an altercation were to break out between the dogs.)

I was told to travel the 30-40 miles anyway because they wont know until the dogs meet, so yesterday on the 22nd I came to what I thought was going to be a viewing and introduction.

Once I had got there and reiterated that my dog can be reactive, they no longer thought it'd be a good idea to introduce them and that was okay BUT I am confused as to why I had to travel all that way to be told what I could have been told over the phone, especially as I did say I was recovering from a surgery and they didn't learn ANY new information as I had told them all of it over the phone.

In the end I met a lovely dog called Diesel, he was absolutely gorgeous in every way but after only a 10 minute walk I didn't feel that my dog or I were allowed the time to really settle into the situation and feel at ease around Diesel. I think Diesel is beautiful and if it weren't for the other things I'd probably ask to come and bring my dog over again and allow them both more time to feel at ease around each other but I feel as though I was ruled out after 10 minutes.

I hope both Bronson and Diesel find the homes they deserve and if I didn't already have a dog I think everything would have gone smoother so if you're looking at any of their dogs, don't be put off by my review because these dogs deserve homes. This was only my experience, yours could be different.

We adopted one of our dogs from the RSPCA a few years ago and had nothing but problems with staff that didn't seem to communicate or were just rude and miserable. Reading people's comments it's a shame to see that the problem clearly has still not been resolved! Hopefully they look into this and change this because all the animals there shouldn't be left and have to suffer not finding their forever home just because of bad customer service! I personally would always use The Blue Cross now!
