Liverpool John Lennon Airport Description

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) is one of the UK’s longest established operational Airports having been officially opened on 1st July 1933.

LJLA is situated seven miles South East of Liverpool City Centre and adjacent to the River Mersey.

In June 2010, Vantage Airport Group (formerly Vancouver Airport Services) acquired a 65 percent majority share of LJLA from The Peel Group. The Peel Group retained a 35 percent share. The Peel Group had acquired a 76 percent majority shareholding in 1997 from British Aerospace and the remaining 24 percent shareholding in May 2001.

In April 2014, the Peel Group once again became the sole owner of LJLA. During the four years of Vantage ownership significant improvements were made to the Airport and it now provides a best in class airport experience for both passengers and airlines.

Peel believes that by investing in LJLA, the business can be taken to the next level, attracting new airlines and new services by capitalising on the excellent operational and commercial performance.

LJLA is one of the UK’s busiest airports and handled over 4. 2 million passengers in 2013. Passenger numbers have increased almost ten-fold since the mid-1990′s, with the Airport moving from 20th to the 12th busiest airport in the UK with flights to approximately 60 destinations in the UK and across Europe.

The Airport has been at the forefront of low cost air travel since the mid 1990′s, when this growth sector of the airline industry started to develop. Airlines at JLA include two of Europe’s largest low cost airlines, easyJet and Ryanair, both of whom have large bases at JLA, offering a comprehensive network of point to point services. More recently, Wizz Air, the largest low-cost, low-fare airline in Central and Eastern Europe have developed their business from Liverpool and recently signed a further five year agreement, whilst FlyBe operate a popular service to the Isle of Man.

Significant investments in recent years include £130 million in a range of infrastructure works including a new and subsequently expanded terminal building, air traffic control centre, hangars, apron extensions, runway refurbishing and upgrading, multi-storey car park and on site hotel. Many of these projects also received support through the European Objective One programme and other regional funding. The new terminal was opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 2002.
A £12 million development programme has recently been completed providing a new larger passenger security screening area and an expanded departure lounge, including the addition of a number of new and exciting retailers.

This on-going investment in Airport facilities to provide an efficient operation and high levels of customer service has helped to firmly establish the Airport not only as a gateway to the North West but also as one of the primary airports in the UK. The Airport is now one of Merseyside’s major employers, attracting inward investment and bringing significant tourism benefits, helping to boost North West England’s economy.

In recent years, the importance and success of the Airport has been recognised both locally and within the travel industry, including receiving the accolade ‘UK Airport of the Year’ in 2007 from one of the industry’s leading trade media.

Liverpool was the UK’s first airport to be named after an individual when it was rebranded in 2001 as a lasting tribute to the Liverpool born, former Beatle, John Lennon.

Would like to give a massive thank you to

The special assistance staff for taking care of my dad who has vascular dementia

On his recent return journey from Liverpool to cork. The 2 guys that i came into contact with were very courteous and friendly and put myself and my

Dad at ease. These workers are a credit to your airport and deserve the recognition for doing an outstanding job. Well done Liverpool airport.

User

We did not travel to Kiev today. We where on a family holiday to Italy from Liverpool airport. The airport staff/ security/ patrolling security where amazing (esp at 5am). It was a lovely atmosphere in the airport this morning. Security search was efficient and quick. Well done to all the staff who obviously worked very hard for us all to have a safe and good journey

User

This was the first time we fly from this airport, it won’t be the last.

From the moment we got there I liked the ease of parking , the cost of parking.

The terminal was easy to get around, the check in was quick, the security was well organised.

In return it took 30 mins from leaving the plain to getting in the car to return home.Going through passport control was fast and efficient, it was actually quite nice to see someone with a smile on their face and wish you a safe journey home. Keep up the good work.

User

I try to use my local airport whenever I can.

I have to laugh at all these mingebags moaning about the £3 charge - well Manchester is about to start charging the same. Personally I get dropped off and picked up on Hale Road if travelling light.

Never had any trouble with the security staff, they’re always pleasant and manage a smile.

Border Force are quite straight laced at all border points - what do these people want??? A song and dance from them on checking their Passport.

Keep up the good work Liverpool JL Airport - take no notice of the moaners.

User

Easyjet Liverpool Airport customer services staff literally went over and above to get my family and I transferred over to a later flight and to actually make it to the gate on time after arriving very late for a connecting flight due to a catalogue of problems affecting the inbound flight. Suffice to say without their efforts there is no way we would have made it so big thanks to those guys for all their help!

User

The free drop off zone where my car park company dropped us off was miles from the terminal building (as they won't use the other drop off during the £6 charge!), security was quick and fine but 3 of us had burger king that cost £30!!!! And was terrible dry and rubbery the airport itself looks grubby and I can't wait to get a drink at the bar and pay a small fortune for it!!!!! I will literally only fly from here in future if the flights are dirt cheap nothing else will tempted me to fly from here

User

Haven’t flew out of Liverpool John Lennon for a few years and now I know why! Went to the Cabin bar for lunch, menu’s available with a small but suitable selection of food - queue for 10 minutes at the bar to order to be told, that they are not serving food today???. Flight is then delayed (totally understandable), decide to get a drink at Starbucks - unfortunately they have no hot water so can’t serve any hot drinks? Head back up to the Cabin bar to get a cup of tea but unfortunately they have no milk !! This is fine they do herbal tea - we do herbal tea but not to sell (what??). Moral of the story don’t fly from Liverpool John Lennon airport.

User

Had a cancelled flight which understandably couldn’t be helped due to strikes but the two ladies at the swissport desk had no people skills. We was left waiting whilst they muttered between themselves, there was no polite welcoming or even a “sorry this has happened guys” we got nowhere with them. If you employ someone to deal with customers then they need to be able to communicate and assist. We decided to Travel up to Leeds Bradford who were amazing and helpful and managed to get us on a flight the very next day!

User

What a terrible experience! Everywhere empty cups plates and dirty glasses and dishes! Smoking zone is like a prison cell. Most restaurants have stopped serving food at 19.30. Had two burgers that were cremated and we sent back! Went to Burger King to find everything was cold! Poor John Lennon must be turning in his grave!

User

Waiting to deliver my lost bag from Saturday! Called yesterday and apparently they had a problem with the delivery company! This is not OK!

First the company I flyed with left my bag in Rome, took them 2 days to find it and delivered in Liverpool and now I'm waiting for them to deliver from Saturday!!!

They' ve asked me if i can collect my bag from the airport! No! I'm working and i'l will not spend £20 for their mistake!

From Monday they keep calling me to tell me that 'Tomorrow my bag is coming'

It's unacceptable! I had food in it which is spoiled now. Been using this airport for 2 and a half years and this is the first and worst experience ever! Never thought it will happen to me! How longer should I wait for this to be solved??!!!

User

Tried using Liverpool airport as it’s slightly closer to us than Manchester & thought it would be easier. Was dropping off a passenger & after having to pay £3 to drive through the car park it’ll be the last. There is absolutely no warning that you will be charged for dropping off & once you drive in you’re forced to pay the money to get out. I’m sure it’s great at creating revenue for someone, but people using your airport are being ripped off, even parking in Chester isn’t that expensive. Manchester airport for any future trips for sure.

User

This morning the baggage conveyer belt was down which meant after queueing for 45 minutes I got to take my bags to the back of another queue (funnily where I started) and queue all over again.

When you arrive 2 hours before your flight you like to think your in plenty of time, instead this became a rush.

Frustratingly nobody around from the airport (or easyJet) to explain what was going on.

User

Regarding the removal of footwear when going through security, my friend has contracted an extremely aggressive and painful verucca on her right foot under her toe. Airport security is the only place she has been required to go barefoot. I am surprised and frankly disgusted that this situation has not been catered for in a risk assessment and therefore prevented when you require people to remove their footwear. I will be reporting this matter to the World Health Organisation as it is a serious risk to the general public, especially young children. My friend will be contacting you shortly so you will be able to apologise to her directly.

User

No paper in the toilets (found out too late!!!), Cabin Bar had no coffee at 7.45am, tables were filthy and the girl working there was on her phone and not interested in providing service whatsoever. The next place, a Food bar downstairs in the departure lounge, also sticky/dirty tables, idle staff, 1 server so we had to wait 10 minutes to order a coffee. Overall, dirty, poor service, lazy staff, all very 3rd world!!!

User

Just got fleeced for £3 just to drop my son off using the Express Drop Off - took about 1 minute. Don't mind paying for parking - but it doesn't tell you the prices until you get to the barrier by which time there is a car behind you - it gives the impression that it is 'a drop off' not a car park. This is a penny pinching operation masquerading as a customer service!

User

It is a disgrace- our first time there we parked up in a near empty car park for long stay - only one car in front of us - only to get back to a notice slapped on our car saying our bumper was over the line- but only put on after the car in front had moved as if the other car was still parked they couldn't have taken the photo!!! It is easy money for the company £60 fine - never again!! We are regular travellers but never again will we fly from your airport first and last time !!!! Ps the cost of 2 beers was more expensive than Monte Carlo

User

If I could give less than 1 I would to this dire place flight was supposed to be at 17.15 and im still going to be sat here at 22.40 why? Its an absolute disgrace wasted an entire night of my holiday sat in your airport thanks alot guys

User

Horrible airport. Flew from there on 24/3/18. Flew back in on 29/3/18. First and last time at this vile place. Only good thing is that my car was still intact when I got to it. We landed in the rain, the signs to get off the car park are very poor. Never again from here.

User

First and last time. What a joke. No liquid over the allowed amount- check. Liquids in sealable see through plastic bag- check. Have I used this bag when travelling before? Check.

I got stopped at security as bag was too big and not allowed. I argued the case as above but no dice.

So had to go and buy a correct size bag, they put my liquids in there for about 30 seconds to go through security. Once through you can throw the bag away. What a bloody joke.
