Living Coasts

About Living Coasts

Living Coasts is a zoo and aquarium located on Torquay harbourside, South Devon. Home to otters, seals, penguins, rays, wading birds, puffins, guillemots and many more marine species.

Living Coasts Description

Torquay's coastal zoo and aquarium, Living Coasts, as well as being a conservation and education charity, is also a unique, all weather visitor attraction. Located on the harbourside, not only does the site offer breath taking views across Torbay but is also an amazing environment to get up close to the animals.
Penguin Beach is home to African and macaroni penguins. All the penguins are free to roam and frequently walk amongst the visitors. You can also see them swimming in the panoramic viewing area. It is also possible to see seals and tufted puffins swimming underwater.
Even an estuary has been recreated, allowing you to get up close to wading birds.
The mangrove section of Living Coasts is a habitat that is home to over 20 species of fish, including rays, archer fish and the amazing four-eyed fish.
There is also Octopus Odyssey, the opportunity to come face to face with a life size great white shark animated model, and plenty of arts and crafts activities for children to get involved in.
The Café @ Living Coasts features breath taking views across Torbay, and there is also the Tradewinds gift shop which stocks a wide range of ethical gifts and souvenirs, including Fairtrade jewellery and local art.

Native seahorses are back at Living Coasts! The two male and two female short-snouted seahorses are now living in our aquarium and we hope to maximize the chances of them breeding by providing the right conditions for them. There are two species of seahorse found in UK waters - the short snouted, which we have here, and the spiny or the long snouted seahorse.

This is a Lovely Place with Beautiful Surroundings. Myself, Daughter & Granddaughter Visited last Friday. Fortunately it was a Beautiful Sunny Day, a Tad Cold But we were able to appreciate it and it’s Surroundings. The Keepers we met were Lovely and the Talks were interesting which even our 3 year old Granddaughter understood and took in and she was well Amused with it all Especially the Penguins. We are going back for definite as we Missed a bit of Days Routines as we got there later than intended but that’s ok as Thanks to Amazing Offer where can Return a Few Times More up to March 26th So Thank you As Definitely make use of that Good Offer Plus we got more of Family who are Keen to join us Next time too. Oh The Cafe also has the most amazing Views out across Torbay and On a Warm Summers day I can imagine how Lovely it’ll be Sat outside the Cafe on The Outside Seating Plus We Noticed Various Seats dotted about the Place too where you can just sit and take in the Views and watch the Animals happily enjoying their Lives. There’s a Little indoor Play Area with Ballpool and Slides Which is Lovely For Toddlers too Which my Granddaughter enjoyed Plus a very Reasonably Priced Gift Shop where you’ve got the choice to spend as little or as much as want as plenty of variety. We’d definitely Recommend Living Coasts And Thank you for a Good Time And a lot of interesting Facts we learnt. Plus The Amazing Offer to revisit for Free. Personally I think it’s worth the Money as it’s about the Same everywhere now. It’s made more interesting where you get to see all Animals being Fed and learning interesting Facts about them all. You get to feel involved too as Penguins literally come up to you Which my Granddaughter Of 3 found Hilarious As one Penguins was nibbling at my Tie belt hanging down and The keeper hurried him along and he kept returning which my Grannddaughter was so amused by Bless her!! She had Fun As did Myself and Daughter. I see some people mention about it not being very big and not much to do and only an hours worth to see, However in our Opinion we felt you can easily spend a good few Hours there by time you’ve watched all the feeds and listened to Talks. Let your Youngsters (if any) play in Play area for a bit. Have a Nice Meal in The Lovely Big Bright Cafe As we did. Or have a Cuppa even in-between and I see outside there’s even an Ice-Cream Shack obviously Open for The Warmer Months And above all If you love these Animals As we do then you can easily spend time just observing them for a while Plus the Bonus Of Taking in Lovely Views Around you. As for The Price of Admission I felt it’s about the same as most Places. After all the Money Paid to get in is in a Fact helping to keep these Lovely Animals to get the life and Care they deserve.A Visit To Living Coasts In our opinion can be as Long as you Choose And if you like this Sort of Attraction then you can easily stay for a few enjoyable hours. We will be back soon and Thank you Living Coasts for an Enjoyable Time Had By all 3 Of us

I live next to Paignton zoo so I have an annual pass which I use every week but last week my daughter suggested taking my 2 year old granddaughter to living coasts as a change. My granddaughter loved it. It's not very busy this time of year so we found the keepers very willing to talk. The man looking after the penguins was telling us all their names and ages. There were some sitting on eggs and we were lucky enough to see one pair changing places to incubate the egg. My granddaughter loved the ones swimming in the water. She was scared of the wave machine by the puffins at first but got used to it after a while. She absolutely loved the otters and they kept going into their house and were right up against the window and when the seals made a noise she was trying to imitate them. You could walk around it in an hour but when you have a 2 year old on her first visit she wanted to spend 20 minutes at every enclosure. We stopped halfway for an ice-cream and coffee and the assistant was very chatty and friendly. We liked the tanks downstairs where you could see the seals and penguins swimming under the water but the glass needed cleaning. My granddaughter was not very interested in the fish but would have spent all day in the sand pit if we'd let her and we had tears when we eventually took her out. However these soon dried up when we went round the corner and found a small soft play area for under 5's. We loved the octopus that was moving around in his tank but she didn't like it. We then went to the cafeteria for lunch . The smell of the pasties was very enticing and we had one each and bought a kids bag which my granddaughter asked for. It had a sandwich, yoghurt, raisins and drink. The cafeteria was clean and reasonably priced. The assistant even reminded us that we could have a 10% discount with our pass. The view across the bay was a bonus. We'll definitely go back at some point but as we live next door to the zoo that will obviously be our first choice.

User

I don’t think the price reflects what’s on offer. Don’t get me wrong it was lovely to see the Penguins and the Seals but other than that, there was nothing else. All the offers were gone, the seal show / feeding lasted about 5 minutes if that then it was over.

User

Glad we paid for the zoo and living coasts ticket as it's not worth the money else. We have an aquarium a lot closer to where we live and get a years free pass for one entrance fee. Was nice to get up close to the penguins, even though you get told off for crouching down to take photos. The seal feeding was quite disappointing as we had a lovely view of the seals then the staff moved them all away yo another part of the enclosure where our daughter could no longer see at all. We everything in an hour, without rushing, and even went around twice. We expected to be able to talk to the staff more but didn't really see that many unless you were in with the penguins or during a talk. I don't think we will return, I know a free pass for a week is great for locals but not when it takes 2hours to drive there.

User

My son loves this place! The only problem is he's severely autistic and needs 4 carer's to keep him safe, and this place only allows 1 carer for free, so a 15 min visit (he gets around it quick!) comes to nearly £50! i've complained and the best they can offer is a yearly deal for him and the carers which comes to around £250!!! Plymouth Aquarium and other venues allow as many carers as needed, (as its obvious they're there for the disabled persons! ) and for a years worth of visits charge £9! huge difference in price and attitude, Please review your policy as it's looking like you're discriminating against disabled people.
