Sports Therapy

Sports therapy objectives include improvements in daily function, sporting performance, recovery from activity, posture, body awareness, well-being, reducing and eliminating pain. Sports therapy is not just for athletes as the name may suggest, with injuries occurring at anytime, throughout everyday life and activities. Treatments aim at eliminating and reducing pain through a variety of techniques, working on stimulating and strengthening weak muscles and also increase range of motion in restricted areas to further enhance performance.

Sports massage

“Massage can be used to soothe sore muscles, increase local circulation, loosen muscle spasms and adhesions, stimulate muscle spindles and reduce local inflammatory responses (Moraska 2005; Weerapong, Hume and Kolt, 2005)”

Sports massage is a physical therapy method that incorporates a selection of manual techniques which have been developed to improve a variety of conditions, and in particular musculo-skeletal problems. Sports massage can be used in a variety of ways. Post event massage aids the muscles in there recovery, speeding up recovery time and relaxing overactive muscles that may spasm and cause pain. Pre event massage prepares the muscles for activity through a series of stimulatory techniques to improve performance. Massage techniques help to mobilise fluid, release soft tissues, increase blood flow, improve joint mobility and muscle extensibility, also reducing and preventing adhesions in post-acute injuries and to help remodel and optimise newly forming scar tissue.

Many clients may not have specific pain but still benefit from have a sports therapy treatment to prevent injury. Preventing injuries is a key objective of sports therapy through the assessment of biomechanics, with the use of postural assessments, screening tools and corrective exercise. The study of biomechanics helps the therapist to view the posture, movement and physical functioning of the body to identify muscle imbalances before an injury occurs, which is vital to success in sport and a pain free lifestyle.
