About London Glassblowing

Peter Layton's London Glassblowing is a hot glass studio focused on the creation and display of contemporary glass art. The studio has a reputation as one of Europe's leading glassmaking workshops.

London Glassblowing Description

The London Glassblowing Studio and Gallery has been established for over 35 years and is where world-renowned Glass Art pioneer and ambassador Peter Layton creates his work. The Studio is currently in its third home, located on the vibrant Bermondsey Street, SE1 - at the heart of a growing hub of London's finest Galleries and Eateries. Leading on from the street, doors described by The Guardian as 'Cathedral-like. . ' lead up to the cutting-edge London Glassblowing Gallery; a fantastic open plan space with regular exhibitions showing everything about contemporary glass from hot blown work, to cast pieces, to jewellery exhibits. Sitting behind the Gallery is the Studio /Workshop, where the vast team of renowned artists blow the work using the wide array of blowpipes, hot furnaces, the Glory-hole, the Kilns, and at a safe distance, a section for the public and passers by to sit and watch the beautiful act of blowing glass live. Behind the scenes is a cold workshop where all the cutting, polishing and finishing takes place.
London Glassblowing works somewhat as a collective, in which Peter Layton nurtures talent by inviting artists to work and blow for London Glassblowing, in return receiving an unrivalled space to blow and exhibit their own work.

If you missed our live video this morning here are some images of a commission being made in the studio. This is Peter's Klimt Landscape.
'Spring 2016 saw the launch of a new body of work by Peter Layton inspired by the Austrian master, Gustav Klimt. Following many months of developmental work, Layton has resolved the series with four stunning designs, three of which are presented here. A relatively lesser known aspect of Klimt’s work are his wondrous landscape paintings, which Layton has interpreted in glass'.
If you're interested in commissioning a piece from one of Peter's series contact Gena Johns in the gallery : gena@londonglassblowing.co.uk

'I experimented with a number of blue colour-grounds which eventually became a sky, while my murrini inclusions took on kite-like personae. While I dictate the process at the outset, as so often happens the design takes on a life of its own, evolving continually with the collaboration and support of my talented team.'
Peter's new series, Kite, pays tribute to one of his all-time heroes, Miro. Visit or call the gallery to find out more. Peter's show featuring Kite ends on 1 September.

Wish I could buy all the beautiful objects....taking some friends there this Monday!

We visit London Glass Blowing studios every Christmas to buy a new decoration for the tree. It is one of my Christmas highlights - beautiful glass pieces, demonstrations (and at Christmas, mulled wine and mince pies!) I'd highly recommend popping along - I'm sure you will love it as much as I do!

User

Loved my visit here, disappointed no glassblowing on the day but the glass pieces on display were stunning and good to see the last day of Latitude exhibition

London Glassblowing may not be on the typical tourist route, but it most certainly should be while in London. We visited in July 2015 during the summer open house. The glass pieces are beyond beautiful. The vibrant colors and organic shapes will take your breath away. To be able to watch such creativity in-person was a highlight during our trip. We now get to enjoy three pieces in the Ariel Series by Peter Layton in our own home every day. I highly recommend visiting London Glass Blowing so make the time to visit on your next trip across the pond.

I learned the basics of hot glass with fantastic instructors Anthony Scala and Tim Rawlinson who are glass artists and masters of the art. It's a hot and full on day but very productive and loads of fun.

User

I have had such a lovely day. A fabulous experience with expert trainers who were very patient with us and helped us to make some beautiful pieces. I would love to have another go! Thanks Anthony and TIm and thanks to the other people on the course for a great day.

I had the most amazing day on the beginners course today. Thank you Anthony and Tim for an incredible day I will never forget! Time to book the next course

User

I had an absolutely amazing class today with Anthony. He was so patient with the three of us students and we had so much fun watching all the magic he was doing and trying to replicate it!! Wish I could do it every weekend.
