Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel

Room was a 3/5 Food 5/5. The food was sublime and the wine choices were excellent. The room was in need of some serious renovation, there was zero water pressure so was impossible to take a shower, the wallpaper was peeling and there was mould in the bathroom. I would recommend a stay here but some money needs to be spent on the site

A characterful and beautifully situated hotel. The decor and facilities are rather tired but very clean and comfortable. The welcome was warm and the service friendly and efficient if a little effusive. The dinner tasting menu was good and the wines well chosen. The breakfast was outstanding. As good as I have had any where and better than most. A pleasant good value stay.

A really nice small country house hotel situated in wonderful countryside. Very close to some of the main Hadrians Wall sites (25 min drive). The decor is a little dated but is in keeping with the style of the house. The food is excellent and varied with a good wine selection. Highly recommended.

Luxury room well worth additional for space and view. Dinner is a "leisurely" 3 hour affair, one of best meals I've had. Hotel could do with a bit of love but nothing too unpleasant.

I love this place. Just for once I booked a Country House hotel and that was what I got.
The owners are brilliant and have built a team of staff willing to bend over backwards to make your staff an exceptional one.
I and my family have now been visiting for nearly 18 years.
Rooms in the hotel are fantastic. But we now have children and find it easier in the cottages. Which are out of this world.
If like myself you are a foodie please visit as you will not be disappointed, it along with owners, staff location are what has made us keep returning for so long.
So please change nothing.

Lovely location on the banks of a low lying river. Very pleased with the service, nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The premises themselves are in need of some attention however considering that it is a historic building it is to be expected and in some respects adds to it's charm. The only real negatives are that the external lighting made it difficult to get to sleep at first; and that the sound of the boilers starting up at around 6.30 can disturb sleep. Otherwise very happy with the stay.

Food was good wine with taster menu good. Decor in main house quite shabby. Bedroom spacious would have been a lovely view except windows overlooked rubbish area which although fenced in had no roof so you could see straight in. Staff on the first night helpful although no one had a clue on how to make a requested pre dinner cocktail that was listed on the menu, didn't spoil our lovely meal. Would I recommend to a friend !!!! Don't think so
