From doctors responding to incidents in their own cars, to our new Magpas Air Ambulance rapid response vehicles, we have always ensured we can deliver our advanced medical care to patients at the scene of their emergency by land, as well as by air. Last year alone we responded to 890 incidents via our rapid response vehicles and travelled over 36,000 miles – which is more than it would take to drive around the world!

Magpas Air Ambulance's training has always been an important aspect of the charity. From creating a very successful community first responder scheme in 2001, which later became part of the NHS Ambulance Service, to leading the way in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine training.
Magpas began providing pre-hospital training when we formed our first doctor and paramedic team in the early 2000's. From there, we piloted the first PHEM training scheme for doctors in 2007 and in 2014 the charity became the first accredited pre-hospital emergency training scheme nationally! In 1997, after looking into how the charity could improve the way it operated, Magpas entered a new partnership with Cambridgeshire Constabulary to use the Police Helicopter. Magpas Air Ambulance then began providing medical care to patients at the scene of their incident by air as well as by land - the first emergency we ever flew to was in Wisbech.
We acquired our own, current, air ambulance in 2013 and now we're fundraising for a next generation helicopter for your community. Find out more about our Further, Faster, Greater Appeal here: www.magpas.org.uk/heli-appeal #NAAW2018

This National Air Ambulance Week we're looking back at the history of Magpas Air Ambulance and how we've become the charity we are today...
Did you know Dr Neville Silverston MBE and Dr Derek Cracknell MBE founded Magpas in 1971? Over 100 GPs around Cambridgeshire volunteered to be on-call 24/7 to treat people involved in road accidents. They found that by bringing medical care to the scene of accidents, patients had better chances of survival and recovery – an idea which remains at the heart of our charity today. Magpas saved my life, such a short string of words but so much more, the road accident in February 2011 left me with life changing injuries but through them I met all of you, that lead me to volunteering 2 days a week in Huntingdon and now I have a whole new group of people I proudly call my Magpas Family. Thank you for my life

Magpas saved my life on the 8th October 2014. I was on my way to work in my van, just like any other day, when a lorry pulled out on me. I hit the lorry head on, leaving me with life threatening injuries.

Luckily the Magpas Helimedix arrived very quickly after the accident, and immediately started to give me the critical care I required. The team managed to stabilise my condition whilst I was still trapped in the van, allowing the fire crew to work on getting me out of the vehicle. Once I was out of the van, the Helimedix team worked on me on the road side, taking over my breathing and putting me into a medically induced coma.

Today, 11 months after the accident, I am well on my way to making a full recovery. I honestly believe that without the immediate critical care I was given by the Magpas Helimedix team, I would not be here today.

I can not thank Magpas enough for what they did for me that day, I will be forever grateful and support Magpas as much as I can.

5 years ago today we met under almost fatal circumstances. After being involved in a head on collision it was touch and go, my lovely Dr VJ and CCP Dan Read came to my aid, bringing their critical care skills and expertise. I still believe had it not been for that very early intervention, I would not be here with my family. Thank you never seems enough, but I feel lucky to be alive, live each day to the full and will forever have a very special place in my heart for all the great work that you do.....long may it continue
