About Maiden Distillery

An artisan distillery making Maidstone Gin in a lovely copper pot still.

Maiden Distillery Description

A small, copper pot distillery which currently makes gin.

Our distillery, housed in an early 19th Century brewery, overlooks the site of George Bishop’s distillery of 1789. Mr Bishop, a Maidstone native, brought his distilling skills straight back from the genever distillery in Schiedam where he originally learnt his trade.

George Bishop’s ‘Maidstone Hollands’ became particularly popular and was made under a special Act of Parliament after George petitioned the Legislature, claiming his gin production would reduce smuggling. This Act proved so beneficial that several further Acts followed. After George’s death the business passed to his three relatives, one of which set up a rival distillery at the Medway Brewery - the site of our very own distillery!

In 2016 we hope to open on selected days & also hope to hold special evening events for tastings and workshops.
