This time our #FeaturedFish Post will be taking a closer look at the intriguing Glass Catfish - It’s easy to see how this fish gained its common name, with an almost transparent scaleless body you can see the elongated spine and rays.
This curious Catfish is of a very peaceful nature, making it ideal for community Aquariums with other peaceful tankmates, and due to their relatively small size when mature - usually attaining no more than 8cm - they suit Aquariums with small s...hoaling mild mannered species, such as small Tetra and Rasbora.
A micro predator in the wild, it lives off tiny water insects found in drainage basins and rivers of Thailand. Although in the home aquarium, it will accept a variety of flake and prepared frozen foods such as Daphnia and Bloodworm.
For these fish to thrive, they will be best suited to a planted aquarium in a good size shoal of 6 or more. Areas of cover should be provided, to avoid this species becoming timid. When healthy, aquarist often enjoy a rainbow iridescent shimmer when the Glass catfish swims under aquarium lighting.
These intriguing catfish are available now at Maidenhead Aquatics at Brigg!

⭐️ It’s time for another Featured Fish! ⭐️ This time, we’re taking a look at Daisy’s Blue Ricefish! Which despite this fishes attractive colouration, it is easily overlooked! These little Gems originate from Sulawesi in Indonesia. Sometimes referred to as Daisy’s Blue Killifish, it inhabits streams that are largely covered by forest, with sandy/muddy substrate and leaf debris. In the home aquarium, this fish has proven to be very adaptable to PH, however, to show best colour...ation, it’s best to keep them in slightly softer water at 24-26 degrees. Aquariums should be mature and well filtered, and decorated with wood, and sandy substrate to mimic their natural environment, but they are also great additions to well-planted aquarium. Keeping them in groups of 6 or more helps intensify colour, with Males (pictured) shining bright blue, with red accents on their fins and underbelly whereas females have a stunning yellow gold body- breeding isn’t uncommon either! With females producing eggs that hang from her underside, which once fertilised, are deposited on leaves. Tankmates should be of a similar size, small Tetra and Rasbora are ideal, as these bare no threat to the tiny peaceful ricefish - which usually attains no more than 3cm! It’s dietary needs are easy to meet, with most specimens accepting crushed flake food and small frozen preparations like Daphnia and baby brineshrimp. These wonderful little fish are available now at Maidenhead Aquatics at Brigg! Pay us a visit in store to see our full range of tropical freshwater fish!

🌟 It’s time for another FEATURED FISH. 🌟 This week it’s the turn of the Stunning Redhump Eartheater (Geophagus Steindachneri). This Incredible South American Cichlid is native to freshwater drainage basins of Colombia and Venezuela, where, as its name suggests, the redhump sifts through silt and substrate for edible foods and organisms - a fascinating practice often observed in the home aquarium environment! Growing to about 18cm, these Cichlids should be kept in an aquariu...m with ample room, and show best colouration in slightly soft acidic water with a PH range 6.5-7. Sexing these cichlids is an easy task, as they grow quickly, and Sub-adults show sexual differences. Males have the signature “Red Hump” on their heads, develop stunning iridescent markings on the body, and grow larger than females. It is recommended that you keep one male to several females to reduce harassment. Breeding in the home aquarium isn’t uncommon. this a mouthbrooding cichlid, with the female holding the eggs in her mouth for 2-3weeks, releasing free swimming young to forage for themselves, the Mother will signal her young to return if she suspects danger is close!
🌟 These wonderful cichlids are available now at Maidenhead Aquatics at Brigg! (Including the handsome male pictured!) 🌟

This week it’s the turn of the Easily overlooked Hockeystick Pencil fish, Also known as the Rocket or Diptail Pencil fish - a name drawn from its interesting upright swimming nature!. This sweet little Gem grows to about 5cm long and has incredible monochromatic markings that make a striking contrast in a well planted ...aquarium - an ideal habitat for this shy species, which usually inhabits the slow moving streams and swamps of South America. This Fish will do best when kept in mixed sex groups, with other small and peaceful tankmates, boisterous species should be avoided to keep this pencil fish happy and active.
