Fish of the week! This fish of the week has to be the one which has caused the biggest stir in the shop this week.
RED FIN NOTHO.
... These absolutely stunning Tanzanian killi fish are without doubt winning over the hearts of us all here at Preston Dobbies Maidenhead, with their stunning colours, brilliant personalities and ease of keeping I can see a few of the staff setting up new tanks for them at home, my self included. These fish are available now in store in pairs!
Here is our fishy fact file about them: The Redfin Notho is found in transitory water-filled depressions in coastal Tanzania. These pools are heavily vegetated and the water depth gradually decreases as the dry season progresses. This beautiful species is an annual killifish, which means it only lives up to a year at most - so the need to reproduce is of high importance. As such, the adults develop very quickly in order to fulfil this need (sexual maturity is reached in a matter of weeks), and the resultant eggs are able to survive periods of drought in the substrate, hatching when the rainy season returns and thus providing a new generation to continue the cycle. The Redfin Notho will bring activity and colour to the upper levels of the aquarium, and is best maintained in a species-only situation, with 2 or more females to every male. If keeping more than one male in the same aquarium, do ensure that the tank is spacious and heavily decorated in order for rival males to retreat to safety if necessary. If tankmates are desired, these killifish can be kept alongside other small peaceful species such as pencilfish, Kuhli loaches, Corydoras catfish, Sparkling/Croaking Gouramis etc., which all enjoy the same softwater conditions. They are, however, not suitable for the general community. The aquarium itself should be heavily planted (include floating species) with the incorporation of plenty of bogwood. Peat filtration is suggested to help keep the water soft, acidic and tannin stained, all of which will help to show the fish in their best colours. Filtration should be efficient, but water movement gentle. Small partial water changes should be carried out on a regular and frequent basis. Tight fitting coverslides are a must as these fish are expert jumpers.

Springs around the corner. We now have our selection of pond Lilly’s in stock each tub contains 3 bulbs so you can replant them if you like as it’s the perfect time of year to get them in so they are established for when the warmer weather comes. If you want to keep them as they are the trio of bulbs will create a lovely dense patch of stunning flowering Lily’s!

The guys at MH aquatics at Dobbies Preston really helped me out a few weeks back. I am new to the hobby & got some bad advice from a certain large chain pet shop about setting up a tank. After realising my mistakes I went to this store on a few occasions & all the staff were always very helpful & knowledgeable. They got my setup sorted out & set me on the right path. My fish are now doing great & I'm enjoying my new hobby. Thanks all at MHA Dobbies Preston.
