New to classical music? Where to begin with a genre 600 years old, differing in structure for the likes of pop, and with track titles reminiscent of the Enigma code... Lifehacker may just help.
Whether you're a venue, musician or audience, if you love music, you win: property planning law in England now dictates that existing Music Venues must be allowed to co-exist and operate. Music Venue Trust UK Music Musicians' Union
It's been a long debate - what did the classical music of ancient Greece sound like? New research & some recent experimentation leads us to lend an ear..
The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) are on a mission to find out how adults taking part in music education in the UK and Ireland can be better supported. There are two surveys to complete:
• One for teachers with adult learners: https://teachingadults.questionpro.com • One for adult learners themselves: https://adultlearners.questionpro.com
... There is an optional prize draw at the end of both surveys, where you can win one of 10 £50 Amazon vouchers. Please send to your networks and to any teachers and learners who might be interested. The surveys will close on the 10 September.
Your answers will help us to understand what’s working well and where learners require more support from the sector.

Making Music have teamed up with the Association of British Choral Directors (abcd) to hold a day of talks and workshops especially aimed at conductors and music directors of Making Music member orchestras.
Taking place on Saturday 25 August at Leeds Beckett University Headingley Campus, the timetable of the day will include:
10.45am Bring your own questions and topics for a ‘round table’ discussion... 11.45am Break 12.15pm Session on group dynamics, led by Xenia Davis 1.15pm Lunch (included) 2.15pm Orchestral conducting workshop, led by Justin Fung (includes a tea break) 5.30pm finish
Places cost £90 and must be booked through the abcd convention website. Please select ‘Making Music Orchestral conductors day’ from the relevant drop down menu. If you can’t attend for the whole day, you are welcome to attend for only part of it, but you must still book a place and the price remains the same.
We are delighted that Justin Fung will be taking the orchestral conducting workshop, alongside one of our member orchestras. Justin has worked with many orchestras both amateur and professional, and is currently Orchestral Education Leader at Opera North.
If you would like to be coached as part of the orchestral conducting workshop, you will need to apply for this separately and there will be a £20 supplementary charge. We will send details of how to apply, and the repertoire to be workshopped, in mid-August to all those who have booked.
Please note that whilst we welcome applications from anyone to attend the day, conductors and MDs of Making Music member groups will be given priority for the coaching spaces in the conducting workshop.
During the breaks you'll also have the opportunity to browse the music-trade exhibition, with major music publishers, tour agents and many other specialist suppliers available to help you get new ideas, plan new repertoire or tours, buy equipment and gifts and much more.
