About Malachite Theatre

Internationally-acclaimed, site-specific Shakespeare Festival in Edmonton, Canada.

Malachite Theatre Description

From 1589-1599 William Shakespeare and the Chamberlain’s Men premiered nineteen new plays in the London Borough of Shoreditch.

These early plays reflect the growth of a young writer learning to live and work in an East London alive with temptation and vice.

The SSC call this body of work the 'Shoreditch Nineteen' - written while Shakespeare was living in Bishopsgate and working for James Burbage, proprietor of The Curtain Theatre (Curtain Road) and The Theatre (New Inn Yard).

We focus on this early Shakespeare as a writer ‘in development’. By setting his early work ‘against the work’, the “Shoreditch Nineteen” can provide a unique perspective on the evolution of Shakespeare’s treatment of theatrical text.

Through our authentic work based upon original performance practices, we hope to raise awareness of this period of Shakespeare's life, and restore Shoreditch to its rightful place, at the heart of Shakespearean London.
