We went for an evening meal on Friday night and everything was fantastic.



I contacted Omar a while back as wanted to visit the restaurant to propose to my girlfriend and to see if there was anything they could help with.



The staff were absolutely fantastic. Everyone involved was brilliant and I cannot thank the team that worked Friday night enough.



Kirsty was our waitress and she was lovely. Really made the whole night special and nothing was a bother for her. She was fantastic from start to finish. Friendly, chatty, great personality. Really cannot speak highly enough of her.



Special thanks to Ellie as well who took me around previously to show me the area and helped with the plans on how to propose.



I haven’t even mentioned the food! It was lovely as well. We had the chateaubriann steak ���



We went into the function room after our mains and I popped the question in there. We did order desserts but to be honest we were a bit too excited to eat them haha!



We will defo be back again.



Venue is beautiful and the staff are all superb. Absolute perfect night.

This place does not dissapoint. All staff were lovely. When we arrived we got shown 2 our table and enquired about the steak chateaubriand as I like a medium steak and other half likes it rare. . Advised 2 get it cooked medium and I would have the outsiders of the steak and other half have the middle. And his advice was spot on . . It was absolute delicious. Our waitress Ruth could not do enough for us, asking if we were warm enough, advising us on the side orders etc. Then as it was quiet she asked if I would like 2 c a room. . It was beautiful.Ruth was very informative about the building and furnishings. We really did get 1st class treatment. Cannot wait to go back

The building is absolutely stunning and so full of character. Our waitress, Kirsty was very friendly and attentive and as for the food - everything cooked to perfection. I asked for pink lamb, and it was pink, soft and delicious. The accompanying fondant potato was soft and huge! The dressed crab comes with separate mayonnaise, which is a great idea - you mix it to your own taste. The potted duck was delicious and had excellent texture. I would definitely eat there again.

Had a lovely meal on Saturday afternoon with my girlfriend's Jane, Cheryl and Gail, food was exquisite, service excellent thanks to Kirsty our table host and the ambiance was second to none, set in the old Shire Hall Durham the architecture is out of this world, and is quite the setting for Lady Mary, Lady Jane, Lady Cheryl and Lady Gail.



We will definitely be returning soon for afternoon tea....crusts off the sandwiches please for the ladies who munch....�

First time visit and it was a fantastic experience, we decided to try a few of the cocktail specials which tasted out of this world and look absolutely fantasic these were recommended by the Bar Manageress Kelly, who was fantastic throughout our entire time in the bar area very friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be returning again to this stunning venue would recommend to anyone & looking forward to having more wonderful cocktails from kelly thanks again ��

The venue itself is stunning, it has been modernised to an amazing standard keeping all of the character and original features.

A pianist and singer played in the restaurant, the music was tasteful and set a lovely ambience.



The Food was out of this world!! Me and my Mam both ordered the 35 day aged ribeye steaks, they were perfectly cooked..melted In your mouth!

Awww... and The sticky toffee pudding.. Mmm!Also a great selection of drinks available.



The service was Absolutely Fantastic ...All of the staff were so friendly, from the minute we walked in the door to the second we left we couldn't of been any better looked after. Loved Coleen, so down to earth and super efficient, she made sure everyone was kept happy while they were in the bar area.



Me and my Mam were also lucky enough to meet Marco himself...what a guy!!

Would highly recommend this place to anyone, we will certainly be back.

I visited MPW as part of the meet Marco night with my partner. The food was excellent and flavours out of this world but the only thing preventing me from giving this an excellent review was the service. Hopefully these are just teething problems but will need addressing if they want to maintain the MPW ethos for great food and great service. The atmosphere in the bar is great with an excellent range of beverages.

Beautiful old building I had the pleasure of doing some work in many many years ago, and happy to say they've kept its character and added to it.

We had the Afternoon Tea which was very nice. A small selection of sandwiches, scones, and other bite-size cakes. We'd taken advantage of the special offer that was running for just under £10 per person and it was well worth it, but I wouldn't say it was worth the full price (almost double that).

My only other slight gripe is the surcharge that is added to your bill with no previous notification or explanation of its purpose.

Having said that, the food was nice, the staff were exceptionally friendly and it didn't feel forced, and the venue is wonderful.

Went for birthday lunch ,the building is beautiful . We had drinks first then where seated st pig table , what a beautiful restaurant. We all chose off the lunch menu 4 roast dinners and 2 veggie starter and mains £18 p/head . The food was good and service good but not organised .



I would def go again and would have given 5stars if was not off the fact of the extortionist price of parking at the hotel, I think any guest of the hotel and MPW should have free parking .

The building itself is absolutely amazing. Beautifully renovated and a really nice setting for afternoon tea. Staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Sadly afternoon tea was disappointing,my gluten free version was served on 2 small plates, not a cake stand. Nothing about making people feel like their meal isn't as good as the 'normal' one. That would be because there was enough food to fill the 3 plates of the normal cake stand! Gf sandwiches were only 2 varieties, not sure what one was but the other was tomato sandwich! No meat or fish in sight. My husband had 4 varieties, including Ham and salmon. Mine cost the same as his, no meat or fish, 3 varieties of cake (2 of 2 of them) Compared to his 4 varieties plus trifle shot and a cream scone. Disappointing.

So looking forward to trying out MPW for lunch time menu! Sadly disappointed visited today menu on website on is not actual menu at restaurant! Asked for advertised menu to be told chef said he would make it but would have to pay normal menu price! Service was very slow to the point my friends and I panicked about getting back for school run and potentially getting parking tickets which somewhat dampened our get together!

I was going to book for my wedding anniversary but reluctant to pay full menu prices if we receive service we did today so maybe next year!

Disappointed to say I can’t recommend the afternoon tea based on my experience. There were three of us but only two of each unremarkable sandwich, and only two of one of the little deserts. There were three scones but only a teaspoon of clotted cream between the three. We asked for more of these things and were brought them without argument (apart from the cream, which we got a tiny bit more but they said they didn’t have enough of) but it meant a lot of waiting each time so scones were cold by the time we got to them. Tea was just ‘tea or coffee’, no choice of teas. All in all a very disappointing experience, when I was really hoping to be wowed.

We were really disappointed with our meal , slow service due to fact not enough staff / waiters, food came out under cooked, waited ages for drink, and charged us way over then should of been. Totally over priced for basic food. Won't be going back ���

Sunday lunch birthday treat. Starters and desserts good. All had steak for mains. Very poor. Cannot order rare. Only medium or well done. Medium looked exactly like the well done. All meat very thin slithers of dry beef and tasteless. Should be faultless considering the brand name 'Steakhouse'.

Since it was announced that the Old Shire Hall in Durham was going to be renovated into a hotel with a Marco Pierre White restaurant we've eagerly awaited it opening. We've visited the restaurant in Newcastle a number of times and never come away disappointed. On the positive side, the way the building has been restored is fabulous. They've managed to retain so many of the original features. On the negative side, the bar area echoes terribly. Also, the reduction of noise isn't helped by bar staff literally throwing empty glass bottles from a distance into the bottle bin. As for our food, we skipped starters and ordered 2 burgers, one chicken dish and one lamb dish. One of our party was gluten free which I stated on our online booking form and we had to ask for the gluten free menu. We had quite a long wait for the food which was average and overpriced. You really needed to order sides with the chicken and lamb dishes. The menu stated the burger came with 'pommes frites'. They were more like oven chips and not like the pommes frites I've had in France or restaurants such as Brasserie Blanc. For desserts we ordered two sticky toffee puddings and one Eton Mess. They were fine, but nothing to make us say 'wow, they were so delicious'. We'll most likely return to give this restaurant another try, but I'm afraid to say it won't be in the near future.
