MARIAGE BLANC
a play by Tadeusz Rozewicz
In a middle class Polish household, Bianca is due to be married. Whilst her family busy themselves with tradition and wedding preparations, Bianca and her sister Pauline navigate growing up and womanhood.
Male dominance and power dominant create a backdrop against which Bianca struggles to find fulfillment and ultimately resists her imminent wedding. As her story unfolds, we see a complex portrait of a young girls’ exploration of her sexual and gender identity.
Performed on stage for the first time in London, Mariage Blanc is brought to you by Director, Philip McGoldrick and Producer, Avni Patel. Working in collaboration with POSK (Polish Social and Cultural Association) they bring to life Tadeuz Rozewicz's remarkable talent.

Never before seen in the UK. Already condemned by the Church of England, this is a surrealist dark comedy unafraid to explore the taboo, the unsavoury and the erotic through the lens of sisterhood - all with tenderness and humour.

Mariage Blanc tells the story of Bianca, a young woman who has been brought up as a boy only to be married off upon her coming of age. Facing the torment of burgeoning womanhood and the sexual expectations of marriage, Bianca becomes increasingly consumed by surreal phallic visions whilst clinging to childhood remnants. Acclaimed Polish film Director Andrzej Wajda hailed Mariage Blanc as “a fairy tale for adults”, while Artur Lundkvist an influential member of the Nobel Laureate Swedish Academy Jury derided it as “overly erotic”. For us, this is a surrealist dark comedy un-afraid to explore the taboo, the unsavoury and the erotic through the lens of sisterhood - all with tenderness and humour. Rozewicz himself wrote it as part of “a fight for freedom”.
The British debut will be directed by National Film and Television School graduate Philip James McGoldrick (winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Angers Film Festival and Berlinale Crystal Bear nominee for his films), and introducing Producer, Avni Patel. Patel and McGoldrick will be incorporating a range of scents to enhance the visceral nature of the work, making for a unique sensory experience. In collaboration with 4160 Tuesdays perfume, a company specialising in bespoke scents for the arts, smells as diverse as ‘farmer’s sweat’, ‘violets and custard’, and ‘sperm’ are already in the making!
