"Some of the best times I've experienced have been when we as a team have been able to create laughter with our patients. It lifts the mood and maybe, just for a moment, those we care for can forget about their illness." - Nurse Pam https://bit.ly/2p81Ba5

"I could clearly see that his death had been very cared for, supported and painless. His death had been as a good a death as you could ask for.” The camera stays switched on as the nurses wash Alan’s body and comb his hair; their tenderness and respect are deeply moving.

"One patient of mine, with about a week to live, was mostly concerned that I keep the windows open, so that he could keep on feeling the breeze on his face and listen to that blackbird outside. I rushed to make sure of it." - Dr Rachel

It can be hard to know what to say during difficult times. Thank you to Mari Andrew for her beautiful illustration of things to say when you don't know what to say.

"I remember reading out a letter to a family from a man who had died. His daughter hadn’t wanted to talk to him before he died so he wrote it down. It was the most difficult thing I have ever done, but I did it. She was crying, I was crying, but I promised him I’d do it so I did it.” - Nurse Sally 💛 https://bit.ly/2CCDzgK

“If anything still needs changing it’s the notion that having cancer is a battle, as if those who die are losers.”
Rachael Bland made a huge impact on many people's lives, and helped to transform the conversation around cancer - during her life, and since her death. https://bit.ly/2oNNlmD

"It’s the simple things you can do to help someone achieve a small goal – like be able to take the bus, or go to a family wedding."
We're celebrating all of our amazing physiotherapists, who work hard to help people live their lives despite having a terminal illness. https://bit.ly/2wTqk5c #WorldPhysiotherapyDay

Gerard's amazing wife tells us the Echo Dot has given her Gerard some of his independence back -"It's enabled him to do those simple things that we all take for granted in life, whether it's changing the channel on the TV or turning on the radio. One of the biggest outcomes has been that for the first time in four years, Gerard was able to call me. It might not be that big a deal for anyone else, but for me, this was huge."
A great example of how new technology can help patients and their families http://bit.ly/2wVfpID

"She was my person. She had such a zest for life and we were so different but got on so well. I never thought I would watch her go so young and leave a young family behind, but the support the family were given was incredible."
We're so sorry you lost your best friend, Claire, but we're so glad we could be there 💛 http://bit.ly/2wLZE7s

"Grief is like wandering through a minefield, as my mother puts it: however carefully you tread, a sudden detonation can happen out of nowhere. A song played in a supermarket; an overheard phrase; someone in the distance who your mind cruelly suggests is your loved one for a fleeting moment." - Owen

"My husband passed away in 2012 and Kev lost his wife in 2006, so we both started volunteering for Marie Curie to give back. One day we went for a coffee together after our volunteering had finished, and then got engaged at my 50th birthday party! It's nice that something positive has come out of something that was so negative, and we're looking forward to our future together."
Congratulations to Jo and Kev who got married in June 💕

"I quickly realised that, being a hands-on person, my passion was actually for palliative care. I wanted to care for people who were at the end of their life – like my mum had been." - Nurse Shirley

User

"I'm sorry for your loss." Such a common expression to use when someone is grieving but is it the right one? Cat explains what it meant for her after her Nan died.

Look at this fabulous cake! Baked and decorated by Head Chef Bryan and his team, for one of our patients celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary.

These beautiful words come from a famous poem. If you're grieving the loss of a loved one, you may find that poetry provides some comfort through difficult times. Here are some of our favourites: http://bit.ly/2MVFIIA

"When patients and carers bring their loved ones into the Hospice it can be a terrifying and anxious time, so I like to think I provide a warm welcome with a smile putting them at ease, plus a few kind words to let them know that they are in a safe and caring environment." - Susan, a receptionist at one of our hospices http://bit.ly/2PzOBG4

Wonderful, compassionate nurses as other people have already said. Just lost my mother, but it was clear how it was more than just a job to them to check on her and reassure her so that she was comfortable during the three days she was in their care. 5 stars.

Today I was at Morrisons in Wakefield with my partner Graham with our collection tins for Marie Curie accepting donations from shoppers. They were very kind. Plenty collected.

Next week collecting at Asda, Shipley followed by several others leading up to Christmas. Although many establishments need extra cash we chose Marie Curie as a place close to our hearts. Anyone who will be visiting McDonalds, Ingleby Road, Bradford on the 17th Dec. between 12-3p.m. will have the opportunity to help raise more money as we are having a tombola and Santa will be there. All proceeds to Marie Curie Bradford.

User

They are the most amazing people in the world the help so many people to live the remaining days of their lives I remember when I was fundraising for them and a lady told me the storey of how her sister was terminal and they help her get married before she passed truly amazing people

My step-father, the most wonderful man, lost his fight against cancer yesterday at home. His final days were peaceful and full of love, dignity, compassion and concern, all because of the Marie Curie team we were assigned. They have had such an impact on the entire family, and they make me want to be a better person. I will never be able to thank the team here in Plymouth enough, I hope they see this and recognise themselves from this description. They made us feel as though we were their only concern - and the feeling of peace we now have has been posdible because of what they did for our loved one. What a gift they were and have. Thank you xxx

My mum spent 9 days in the Marie Curie Hospice in Newcastle before she sadly passed away on the 28.9.2017.

I can’t put into words what an amazing Hospice it is and how kind and caring the staff were from the cleaners, cook, nurses, doctors and handymen. They not only looked after my mum but also looked after my dad and the rest of our family. I will do all I can to raise money for your charity from now on. A truly beautiful place to spend your final days 😘😇

User

Marie curie organised a care home for my Mum in her last days. She was well cared for and the staff supported us when she passed.

User

Marie Curie you are true Angels x

You were there to comfort my loving dad to pass away in his own home with all his family around him.

Thank you for his care x

Marie Curie nurses support so many more people than the patient. During the last few weeks of my husband's life, they were the main constituent of the glue that held us all together. It was wonderful for me to go to bed knowing that there was an excellent nurse there to tend to Keith's every need, & to do what was needed in a far superior way than anything I could manage. It was also good to listen to Keith during the day telling me of the things that he had talked about with Lorna, or Luis, or Maggie, or Margaret. I think there were a lot of other things talked about that I didn't get to know.

It's a precious resource at a difficult time. Please do what you can to support this wonderful cause.

Marie Curie is a charity very close to my heart. They go above and beyond to help those suffering with a terminal illness to ensure patients have the best care during their last moments.

We lost my Mum, Claire Allen in December 2014, aged 44. She was diagnosed in the September, it was very quick from diagnosis to death. The Nurse are outstanding, they really are. They ensure that the patients and families are at ease during a very heartbreaking time. On my Mums final days she seemed calm because of the warmth of the hospice, being such a beautiful & peaceful setting.

I remember a Nurse who was looking after my Mum on a 12 hour shift actually rang whilst she was off to see how she was. This is why I will always continue to support this organisation as it's close to home for many of us. They rely entirely on the funding of kind hearted people. So please, do events, fundraise, get involved. Because with out them, I don't know how my family & many others would've coped without their support.

On behalf of my story & others. Thank you xx

User

Marie Curie community staff were angels in disguise they supported our family in caring for our Mum at home the last few weeks of her life and although were very compasionate they always brought a smile to her face with their bright and sunny presence. Couldn't of had her home where she wanted to be without them. Forever in their debt. Xx

User

Marie Curie are a Godsend, they enabled me to look after my dear Mum at home. Sadly it was only for a week as Mum lost her fight, but it was here at home-which is what she wanted more than anything. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making it happen for us, you gave me the strength to look after her. Now I just need to find that same strength for her funeral

User

I would just like to thank all the ladies involved in my Dad’s care. You are all earth angels, you’ve done so much for us as a family and made my Dad’s final days comfortable. My heart is broken but happy he’s a peace, Thank You xxx

User

I can’t thank everyone enough for the care my mum received In her last week of life, such a valuable & much needed service, not only did my mum receive the best care & dignity while in the hands of the nurses & HCA’s of Marie Curie they were also a great support to myself and my siblings during such a difficult time and even spent a couple of nights caring for my mum at home so we could get some much needed rest. One of the HCAs even kept in touch on her days off to check in on how mum was doing..... thank you to the Marie Curie Angels we couldn’t have done it without u!
