Hello everybody,
my name is Marlies and I am a jewellery designer and maker living and working in the beautiful seaside town of Brightlingsea in Essex, UK.
After getting my degree in Holland where I am from, I met my husband while traveling the world and moved to the UK about five years ago. Despite that my work is still heavily inspired by growing up surrounded by flower fields in the north of Holland and Tulips are featured regularly in my work.
I grew up on the coast in Holland and live on the coast now where I go for long walks with my dog looking for inspiration in the wind and salty sea air. Love having the cobwebs blown away. I have recently started making bits and pieces with sea glass that I have found on the beach down the road and I am hoping that it will become a large part of my new collection.
I have always liked large gemstones and pearls and I tend to make quite a few pieces with 'just' one stone as I like the attention to be drawn to the stone rather than the rest of the ring. Real statement pieces. I go to work the same way with the sea glass that I find and make simple pieces with the glass as centerpiece.
That said I also like intricate wire work pieces where I start with a stone or pearl and create a flowing web of wires around it that somehow evolves when I am working on the piece.
I make everything by hand in my small studio upstairs while the dog snoozes next to me. Can't get much better than that right?

Yesterday’s prompt was photography. I take all my pictures with my iPhone or iPad on the kitchen table with natural light. And maybe a filter here or there 😊 Day 14 and today’s prompt is where it all began, for me that was an open day at de Vakschool voor Edelsmeden in Amsterdam when I was 17. That was all it took and I was hooked on being a goldsmith. I have missed a few days in #marchmeetthemaker2019 so I have compressed them into one. Day 9 - Story behind name is pretty simple. Marlies White is my name and I make jewellery. Need I say more? Day 10 - You, well...this is me. Hi 👋 I was born and raised in Holland 🇳🇱 but now living and working in Essex, in the UK 🇬🇧 Day 11 - Reducing Waste, we jewellers are very good at collecting any scrap metal as it is quite expensive to work in precious metals. I use up any bits and sc...raps I can until no further use for me and it goes into my trusty old biscuit tin. One day I will hand this in to be refined back into shiny sheet and wire to be used again. I also try and reuse as many plastic bags as I can. Today’s prompt is Product range. I tend to make a lot of one-offs, but to be more professional and organised I do try to design a line of jewellery. I work on my own jewellery at nap times and I work as a bench worker for a few other jewellers when there is work.
