Marmalade Trust Description

Why Do We Do It?

Social isolation is a huge problem, it predominately affects older people (due to difficulties in accessing local support and due to loss of peer group) but also affects other groups, i. e. such as people with disabilities
Over the course of the last three years, it became very clear to our founder, Amy, that despite the amazing efforts of existing charities, a number of vulnerable, isolated adults were missing out on the basic, opportunities that we all enjoy. She resolved to do what she could to close this gap.

Lead volunteers needed!
Would you like to play a rewarding and hands-on part in bringing joy to our lonely and isolated guests this Christmas Day? We need over 100 volunteers this Christmas, 20 of which are lead volunteers who help coordinate our Christmas Day lunches across Bristol and the wider region.
It's a great role to share with a partner, friend or family member. Vicki and Stu enjoy it so much they are returning for the third year in a row!
... As a lead, your help will be needed for approx. 6 weeks on the run up to Christmas Day and on the day itself (3-4 hours per week, very flexible working). Training will be provided by us and lots of friendly support is at hand. Be part of something amazing!
You can download the role profile here https://marmaladetrust.org/volunteer/ and we're of course always happy to have a chat 07566 244 788

'Loneliness is a growing crisis, akin to an epidemic. It is one of the greatest challenges we face as a society. But addressing it would present one of the greatest opportunities to build a kinder and less divisive society.'

The season of goodwill is approaching…
Marmalade Trust is looking for venues in Bristol, South Gloucester and North Somerset to host our members for a Christmas Day lunch.
This year we have 150 people to take out who would otherwise spend the day alone. 5 venues confirmed so far, another 5 to go. 15 people per venue.
... Is your pub/restaurant open and has space for us?
Or perhaps you’d even consider opening your doors especially for us like the lovely The Bristolian Cafe and Post Office Tavern have done for us.
Can you help us spread some Christmas cheer this year? Contact us if you can help or to find out further info.

There are just a few weeks left for Marmalade Trust to be one of the Co-op Food good causes for the local community fund.
We're raising as much as we can to help provide Christmas dinners for lonely people. Every penny will make a difference.
If you can help in any way, please do.

Companionship comes in many forms. We love this super friendly reptile who want a hugs. It's not just dogs and cats who can be our best friends.

Be this person!
Be the friend, the family member, the neighbour, the classmate, the colleague who is there for someone. Being there for someone, may also mean someone is there for you.

'When it comes to your health, loneliness may be as bad as smoking and worse than obesity.'
Exercise, volunteering, having good connections with family or friends, participating in a community - these are all ways to help reduce loneliness.

We're a charity with a big heart. We've got an important mission too - to find and support isolated people to reconnect with society and enjoy better lives.
It's no simple aim and we can't do it alone. We need a community of people with big hearts as well.
... There are so many ways you can help us. You can volunteer, you can donate, you can start a conversation about loneliness, you can take a moment to reach out to an isolated person.

True companionship can be elusive. Some of us search all our lives for this and it is a treasure when found.

It is so gladdening to hear about the fantastic people out there doing amazing things.
Hats off to Mike who set up B:Friend. Take a moment to read his story. We're all in this together, we all want to wipe away that needless loneliness and bring our communities closer together.
It can be done!

'The Campaign for Better Transport (CBT) has released a report showing that Government budgets to subsidise bus routes were reduced by over £20m last year and that more than 300 services were reduced or removed completely in England and Wales.'
'This means that many local charities and community groups would have to stop providing these services, leaving thousands of older people trapped at home and unable to access their activities.'

Today The Independent celebrates 10 years of their annual Happy List, a celebration of remarkable people whose kindness and selflessness enrich the lives of others.
We are extremely proud that our founder Amy Perrin is one of the 50 who has made it onto this year’s list. A wonderful recognition of her compassion and tireless hard work to help lonely and isolated members of our society.
Congratulations to all other nominees too and as always, a big thank you to our incredible ...volunteers, without whom we couldn’t do what we do 😊🧡

'When loneliness becomes a lifestyle, it can have a profound effect on health and can lead to increased levels of stress hormones as well as a heightened risk for heart attack and stroke, dementia, and premature mortality.'
This is precisely why we have so much work to do.

Summer time is not all sunshine and socials for many. July and August are busy times for one helpline, with people feeling alone and isolated.
This article talks about how 'everyone should take their “five a day” – not just five sets of tennis or five minutes to enjoy a sunset; but a recommended five meaningful conversations in their community – conversations about love and loss, hope and heartbreak, mischief and misadventure'
What can you do to get your five healthy interac...tions?
