Today we welcomed our ✨millionth ✨ pupil through the gates of Marwell! 🎉 🥇 That's right, more than one million young nature lovers have visited Marwell over the years and one of our long-term supporters St Margaret’s Church of England Primary School, from Angmering, helped us to celebrate the occasion. ✏️ 📚 We believe giving young people the motivation, tools, knowledge and insight to make a difference is more important than ever in order to conserve biodiversity around the world. 💚🌎 Our VIP pupils toured the zoo, discovered fascinating artefacts and met live animals during workshops at the Science and Learning Centre before leaving us with their special Marwell gift bags. 🐯 🌱

The birthday bell is ringing for our beautiful Amur tiger Milla! 🎉 🍰
Turning nine today, Milla has spent the last few weeks basking in the sunshine and cooling off in her pool. 🐯💦
The population of Amur tigers today is estimated to be between 400 and 500 but this number is falling, mainly due to poaching but also because their prey species are being hunted.

What better way to cool off in this hot weather than with a refreshing shower? We think Ernesto approves.☀️🛀💦
Ernesto, our giant anteater, recently celebrated his 14th birthday. 🌱
At the end of a long day and despite being adept at digging, giant anteaters choose not to sleep in burrows. Instead they seek a secluded spot to curl up in, covering their head and body with their fan-like tail.
... Cosy indeed!

We're thrilled to announce our keepers have named our two Arabian oryx calves, Galaxy and Orion 🌱 😍
We’re the only UK zoo to keep this ‘vulnerable’ species so the arrival of our two calves is positive news for the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme (EEP) 🌏
Arabian oryx were hunted to extinction in 1972, but thanks to successful captive breeding and reintroduction efforts, the species is now facing a more secure future with its wild population growing to around 1...,100.
Both the calves are thriving! Have you spotted them in their paddock yet?

We have some wonderful news from the field! Results from this year's Great Grevy’s Rally (GGR) show there are now around 2,800 Grevy’s zebra in Kenya, representing a healthy increase in the population since 2016! 🦓😁🦓
Grevy’s zebra populations have historically experienced declines from around 15,000 individuals in the 1970s, to just 2,000 in the early 2000s. Estimating population sizes for this species is challenging, so in 2016 the Grevy’s Zebra Technical Committee, of which... Marwell Wildlife is an active member, proposed a radical change in tactic by enlisting the public to search for them and take stripe pattern photographs over two consecutive days.
The 2018 GGR returned 23,000 images of Grevy’s zebra, and with an increase of around 400-500 individuals since 2016 the results are heartening. Remarkably, this is the first time that census results from a non-governmental group or consortium have been officially accepted for an endangered species in Kenya.

Love is in the air! ❤️🐒🦓🎉🍾 A huge congratulations to animal lovers Ben and Mike who got engaged here at Marwell Zoo - with a little help from their friends and family who each held up a letter spelling 'Will you marry me?'
Ben says: "There was no other place that I could think of proposing. As animal lovers Marwell is where we chose to go on our first date. We then returned for our first Valentine's Day together and for our first anniversary. We have both visited Marwell before and love the work the charity does for the world's wildlife and we love following the changes and growth of the zoo grounds."
We'd love to hear all about your romantic moments at Marwell...💕

Tongues are wagging at the zoo today as we're celebrating Ernesto the giant anteater's 14th birthday! 🍰🌱🎉
Giant anteaters are considered the most threatened mammal in Central America. However, they are found in many protected areas and a reintroduction program is currently being carried out in Argentina.
How many of you have spotted our lovely boy, Ernesto on one of your trips? 🕵️‍♀️🌱

Wow wow wow. As Londoners who live in Hertfordshire now and thought the zoos we have are fab they are nothing compared to Marwell. Staff super lovely, enclosures FANTASTIC and shows with the happy animals, beautifully designed to feel like you are on a little sort of safari. We spent a good 3 hours and saw almost everything but we have young children who were running everywhere we will definitely come back and recommend to everyone! If I was nit picking the lack of open kiosks around the park are a problem but we had drinks and snacks so didn’t affect us. Great job Marwell!

User

We visited here on 4th May 2018, the staff are very helpful, the area is very clean, the animal talks are very good, knowledgeable staff. The Tropical House & Lemur Loop is amazing. Also, the cold blooded corner is great too - especially if you're a reptile lover! We managed to get some great photos!

We loved seeing the Penguins & listening to the Penguin talk & feed - we missed seeing Ralph though as I've seen him each time I've been to Marwell Wildlife since I was little!

Marwell Wildlife is a amazing place, a great charity, the ticket prices are good for what you get and it's a great day out, only thing I wish for is that I could go more often!

Keep up the great work! :) x

User

We visited again today, we LOVE marwell zoo and as home educators the educators discount makes regular trips to the zoo affordable! It was a cold and wet day but we ate our lunch in the lovely picnic room. We were really impressed that the penguin talk included information about protecting our oceans etc/zero waste/plastic pollution and that the restaurant were more than happy to refil my re useable coffee cup! The penguin keeper was also lovely and perfectly happy to answer my 3 children’s numerous questions! We’ll definitely be back in the summer!

User

We come to Marwell a couple of times a month, more if we can. It's the best zoo I've been to, and we go to as many as possible, we travel the length and breadth of the country to see our favourite animals, but we always feel happiest at Marwell. Personally I wish there were some great apes, especially Orangutans as they are my favourites, but we can usually fit marwell and monkey world in in one day so its not such a big deal. We especially live the Giant Anteater, Giraffes and the white faced saki Monkeys. Friendly, helpful staff, clean and spacious enclosures for the animals and Marwell house is stunning.

User

Thank you for a wonderful visit, well worth it despite (or was it improved by?) the snow flurries we had today. Had a lovely chat with the keepers in Lemur Loop, I hope you guys manage to find Peter a lovely peahen! Despite the weather I managed to see nearly all the animals, although a few decided to keep warm (and I can't blame them) - worth staying the day and checking back on enclosures if you didn't get a good view the first time. Certainly considering becoming a member in the near future!

User

Just got home what a great day the main reason we went was to see the new tropical house and was I disappointed no not by a long shot it was amazing every aspect of it is well thought through the consept of the carbon neutral is fantastic I got a great picture of the sloth what a great day many thanks see you soon

User

I have an annual pass and can honestly say I’ve been about 20 times this past year, I regularly come just with my son and we can spend all day together there with neither of us getting bored, yesterday we arrived at 10:10 and left at 4:55, could have spent a couple more hours too! He tells me it’s his favourite place, and I have to agree!

User

I go to marwell frequently. Been with my 2 year old today, it was great. Now the weathers warming up the animals are starting to come out more. I managed to actually see the sloths face in the brand new tropical house! And the mouse deer! My 2 year old ran off so didn't get to spend ages looking. It's a great day out for everyone. Some of the enclosures are empty whilst animals have moved etc. I don't feel it has affected my visits. The staff are friendly and always happy to tell you about the animals. My son enjoyed the ants love marwell and the parks are good fun for both my boys.

User

We had a lovely day at the Park today with our five year old on his inset day. The new tropical house is really impressive, we loved seeing the sloth, and it was a fabulous warm up for us on a cold rainy day. We were a bit disappointed though that all of the glass panels around the walkways had a huge frosted pattern all over them so we had to lift our little boy up to see anything over the edge which wasn’t ideal considering the drop underneath. No idea why someone would design something that is for all ages like this.

We still had a lovely day though.

User

Been to Marwell a few times and always loved it.

What did surprise me was the things like face painting and pop up shops and train stops would only take card payments, not knowing this and going on past experiences I only took cash with me and left my cards behind as I was carrying around a picnic.

This did mean that my children ended up missing out on these things as to pay cash you had to go all the way back to the start to pay at the gift shop and we were already on our way round the zoo with two little ones in toe x

User

The park very good for animals but not for some people like us , it was hot on Sunday and it was as expected busy, so why only a few places to get drinks and the cafe near entrance no toilets no ice cream left and only one or two serving , my 80 year old friend, and disabled husband was told to go to top of hill to use toilet Train not working not good as my back gave out walking so far ..... we missed most of it and went home such a shame I always wanted to go and this was a birthday treat for our friend who was 80 ... on a good note what animals we saw was very good and looked content.......the fact you didn’t plan ahead of the place being packed out by no staff to work it properly you have three stars I might come again but more things like food outlets and toilets would be good

User

Ok so the enclosures and animals are 5 out of 5. We loved that side of things...but 2 stars lost due to catering.

Hottest day of the year so far...a Bank Holiday Sunday and half the catering outlets closed. Those that were open were either single or double manned when 4 would be the minimum for good service.

Wait in a queue for a drink/Food/ ice cream a minimum of 20 minutes!!! Then when we got to the front of the queue...only half the menu available and no large drink cups...so we didn't eat. Just a snack....Why no signs...no extra staff...no planning?

I would recommend going if you love animals...give yourself at least 4 hours...but take a picnic & plenty of drinks.

Big plus is it is reasonably priced and the habitats are great...lots of happy animals. Would go again even though travelled from Kent...with a picnic.

User

Went there this Sunday gone very cold a lot of empty pens , didn’t rain thank god , paid £60 and the rest , 3 adults 2small kids , food was good on the restaurant , chilli con carne , won’t be back in a hurry , longleat is better

User

In all honesty, it was a very big let down. My family and I were so excited to come back after 2 years and see the new Tropical House that I was so excited to see, and it was very upsetting to see that what was a near £8M build, is not much more than a giant green house with butterflies, birds, a lizard, sloth and a couple of tiny monkeys. Nearly 70% of the animals we didnt see due to either being in their shelter which isnt accessed by public or it was empty! there is such a huge proportion of wasted ground it was reallt disappointing to see. Also these comments are not only from myself but through other convosations we over-heard from other members of the public. Anyother time I would have given Marwell 5/5 but sadly its lowered its rating :(

User

I was expecting too much to see more happy animals. Penguins do not feel as good as home. I saw a penguin who could not breathe and I was feeling the same thing. And surprise. There was no vet to alarm. I hope he's alive. By the way. I ate something that OMG .. And now I'm not feeling too good. Contains gluten and raisins. And I drank a juice. Cmon ... you can do it much better. The monkeys are so bored. And a bit of a psychopath ... a few of them ... I'm sorry, boys. But this time it was not very cool.

User

What a let down. Not many animals at all.

I have been before many years ago and it was a lovely zoo

This time it cost us £192.50 entrance and there were not many animals at all. No lions, tigers etc

I was beginning to wonder why we had bothered. It was warm but the animals were not even inside they were just not there at all. Long list of animals on the website but it would appear they are extinct!

Certainly wouldn’t go again and wouldn’t recommend.

Very disappointed children and adults

This weekend I managed to get the family away from Merlin for a day seeing cats and monkeys.... £71 for a family of four to walk round Jurassic park! Great location unfortunately many of the enclosures were empty. There were no cats or monkeys and whilst I know wildlife does it’s own thing, the enclosures are not so big we could have missed all of them. Sorry that was our first and last visit.

User

One of the worst zoos I have ever visited! Lots of empty enclosures, and only one restaurant in the whole place! Queuing for half an hour to 45 minutes for lunch when you have a starving family with you is ludicrous! Would not recommend to anyone and definitely wouldn't come again!!!

User

One of the worst days out I've ever had. Hardly any animals in the enclosures, toilets closed, very long lines at lunch that staff couldn't cope with, it took 45 minutes to get served, and when we did get served, the food was cold. The ground staff were doing their best, it's management that need throwing to the tigers. (If there's any in the enclosures). Will never visit again.
