Our Longhorn winter beef boxes contain sirloin and rump steaks, as well as heritage and contemporary steaks, melting slow roast and fast roasting joints for Yorkshire puddings plus plenty of mince and meatballs for midweek convenience! Each box is 10kgs - and uses the same space in your freezer as 4-5 loaves of bread.... . There is a very limited availability of luxury cuts such as oxtail, fillet and chateaubriand to add to your box. There’s been LOTS in the news about cattle and the environment, and we’ve noticed some confusion! Firstly to distinguish between global industrial beef farming (particularly the Americas) and British beef farming: Globally cattle are often fed mainly on grain, to fatten them fast and bulk them up. This is wasteful of water and of prime arable land and it doesn’t produce natural, healthy beef. In the UK cattle are mainly grass fed (even when ‘finished’ on grain) on land which ...is most suited for growing grass, something our 💦 climate does well! Additionally there are strict rules regarding use of hormones (not permitted) and antibiotics in farming, not so in many other countries where routine use is prevalent.
In some countries, natural habitats such as rainforest are cleared to make room for cattle on land which is basically unsuitable anyway. In Britain farms tend to be small (some US ‘feed lots’ contain 100,000 cattle in just a square mile!). @maydencroft_manor we graze our cattle at a very low density per acre even for the UK, and only their natural product - cow pats! - adds anything to the grass and soil. Such a well adapted breed as the English Longhorn is used by us to graze on nature reserves, improving the habitat by preventing scrub taking over. We’re really proud of the environmental work of our cows, anyone who enjoys a delicious Maydencroft Longhorn Steak knows they can do so with a clear conscience.
