Merlin Archery Description

Est. 1975 and situated in Leicestershire and now Bishop Auckland County Durham* England, Merlin Archery Ltd. is a company specialising in everything and anything to do with archery!

This is how the story began. . .

It all started in 1973 when Chris Jones attended the IFAA's European championships in Germany. Chris was shooting a recurve at the time, but while he was there he saw an American serviceman shooting a compound bow. Having never seen a compound before he asked if he could have a closer look. The American was only too pleased to oblige, and handed the Jennings-made bow over to Chris. Immediately Chris fell in love with it and vowed he would have one.

Arriving back in England he approached all the archery equipment specialists but to no avail. No dealers in Britain stocked the new type of bow, but one of his friends was visiting the United States, and so Chris asked him to bring back a compound bow. His friend brought him back a P. S. E.

During that year he attended many archery tournaments. It did not matter which class of bow he was pitted against he still won. Primarily a field archer in those days, he tried to introduce his new compound bow to target archery. The governing body of England, the G. N. A. S. , had no classification for a compound bow, and with their motto 'union, True Heart and Courtesy', Chris was allowed to shoot, all be it on a separate target, at a different distance and sometimes in a different field!

What would normally be a deterrent for some people just made Chris more determined to introduce the compound bow to a wider range of people. In 1975 he decided to manufacture an English made compound bow, as unlike today, purchasing from abroad was very complicated and costly. So after closely studying his P. S. E, he produced his first compound bow. Merlin of England was founded.

In the early years from 1975 to mid 1984, the compound bow was not accepted in international competition throughout Europe, except within the International Field Archery Association (IFAA). But recognition was growing, and Chris was asked to take part in the first FITA field test tournament in Yugoslavia. Taking every opportunity to compete at international level throughout Europe and America, the brand of Merlin was starting to get noticed.

In 1985 Merlin won the prestigious MIDAS business award for excellence in innovation and manufacture.

For Ben, like Chris, archery was in the blood. He began shooting at the age of 8, travelling with his Dad to competitions all over the world. At 16, he had a choice to either stay on at school to further his education, or to join the company. Against his tutor's advice, he joined Merlin Bows, but continued part time college education studying Computer Aided Engineering.

It was apparent to Chris in 1989 that the compound bow was destined to change, and Merlin saw the advantage of C. N. C. machined risers. It was in 1990 that Merlin's first C. N. C. machined bow was produced, called the Omega. It is also interesting to note that Merlin was one of the first companies to realize the advantages of machined riser bows, before many of the major companies introduced them. After being continually let down on deliveries by sub-contractors, he bought his own C. N. C. machine, and had it installed at his premises. This opened up new opportunities, and was the beginning of what is now a thriving machine shop running seven days a week using between 2 and 3 tonnes of 6082 aluminium each month.

Today Merlin has some of the most sophisticated software systems, capable not only of producing machined components, but 3D modeling and mold tools are also designed and produced in house.

At the core of Merlin's company is a love of the sport.

The bow is part of an Englishman's heritage. Henry I, King of England 1100-1135, is credited with the first official encouragement of archery. The legend of Robin Hood was handed down from around 1200, and Henry VIII in 1511 passed a law that compelled bowyers to reside in such localities as may most require their services. Being an English company and only 30 minutes from Sherwood Forest we are based in an area steeped in tradition.

Merlin's services have been required throughout the world, supplying bows to National, European and World champions. They are proud of their tradition and will continue to provide and service what they consider to be the finest bows anywhere in the world.

We've been renovating our warehouse as of recent and we've found some Mybo risers that were slightly soiled during manufacturing and did not pass our stern quality checks.
Rather than letting them gather dust, we decided to drop their price by 20% off and see if we could find them a loving archery home!
A Mybo Wave - £180... A Mybo Elite - £288
Make sure to drop us a message or email our support team at support@merlinarchery.co.uk about purchasing, once they're gone, they're gone! Details on the riser are included in each picture.

Just a quick note to say we are running a little bit behind on dispatching online orders this last couple of weeks.
It seems the nice weather has inspired everyone to get out and shoot their bows! Our orders have spiked, and the team are working incredibly hard to keep on top of it. (We've even requisitioned the glamorous Aaron to help sort deliveries! 🤦)
So a big thank you to our warehouse and customer service team for powering through, and a HUGE thank you to our cust...omers for choosing Merlin.
Just so you know, we're expanding our warehouse team from next week with several new recruits. Customer service is of the very highest priority to us, and we will continue to invest in staff and processes when needed, and to justify the faith you put in us.
For everyone out shooting this weekend, shoot straight and enjoy! 🎯

Bargain corner time! This one has just come into our hands today and it's a lovely and rare Hoyt Tribute in excellent condition. It's the ultimate finger shooter bow for any left handed archers out there with a range of 40-50#, a 26-29.5" draw and want an axle length at 45". The bow includes a nicely fitted arrow rest already and the bow even comes with its original instructions all for just £375.
Remember this is a one sale item so the longer you leave it the more likely it'll disappear!

Fantastic weather deserves a fantastic woodland course to shoot at!

Superb service and knowledge! Recently got back into archery after a long break and had me shooting a piece of tape, reliably, in no time at all after sorting out my bow (and a few technique pointers!) Really very please and we will be back!

User

Ordered from the other side of the world, not only the shipment came in lightning quick and hassle free, but also their customer service is AMAZING (from answering doubts, to holding items for me that were out of stock, to modifying my order manually when I forgot something).

Thanks, you absolutely rock!

Luke Gill is an absolute star. Only went in to try some release aids, came away after spending all day there with a complete compound package. Awesome day thank you so much , great deal and superb knowledge

Incredible service as always today. I bought my first bow here 2 years ago and stopped in today for an upgrade. As usual the staff have no problem spending as much time as necessary to make sure what you buy is 100% suitable and set up correctly. Outstanding service and I'll continue to point all my archery friends this in the direction of Merlin.

User

I have looked at starting archery for a while and decided to pop and have a look. I was greeted by Dan who spoke to me about how I wanted to start , which bow I was looking at etc . I was taken to the range where Dan kindly set me up various bows , advised me and tutored me. Very patiently I was allowed to practice until I was happy to make a choice. I left with a great set up to start archery and was extremely impressed by the professional service and very honest approach to the sale . I traveled over two hours to merlin as I’d heard they offered an outstanding service, I was not disappointed! Well done , very happy and will certainly return my business in the future. I would recommend this place to anyone. Thank you very much for a great shopping experience and a personal thank you to Dan, he even offered me a coffee and we parted on a handshake. Outstanding service

User

I have been twice now to merlin which is very impressive with the amount of items on view, with even more kept in the back because they don't have room to fit it all. I especially love the way the traditional bows are set out and the amount to choose from.

My second visit was on the Friday after Xmas and it was extremely busy and long wait times which you don't mind when you actually see the care they take with making sure things are set up right for each person. Once served I got excellent help from Callum in getting set up with a bearpaw Blackfoot, arrows and a few bits that I had gone for. I also found out #35 is the max I will ever pull due to my bow elbow. I will definitely be using them more even though it is over two hours on buses to get there. Great choice with equally great staff and brilliant statue outside.

User

I can't say enough about everyone at Merlin Archery. They went above and beyond helping me get a mybo Edge into my daughter's hands. Even when I ran into my first issue they were quick to come up with a solution to my problem. I thought ordering everything from the U.S. could become a issue. But these guys kept in constant contact with me to verify everything was okay. I will not hesitate and continue to order from Merlin Archery. Thank You

Hi Team

I made a visit to the Loughborough store last Saturday to purchase a new recurve bow. I would just like to say how friendly and courteous the staff were. I entered the store and as the store was busy my name was put on the waiting board. I was soon met by Jim and I discussed with Jim that I was new to Archery and had just passed my Archery GB Instructors course the previous weekend. I explained that I had a budget of a maximum of £400 and thought I’d be in an out in 30 minutes. In fact Jim went through a very professional approach to fitting me totally out with all the equipment that I needed, discussing each article of equipment and any choices or decisions I needed to make to create the best setup for me. I was very impressed with Jim and his knowledge of archery. I was not rushed and Jim took his time and did not rush me helping me out all the way with my purchase and setup. Testing my setup on the range and also giving me some coaching on my form etc. Two hours later I left the building, fully setup with all my equipment grinning from ear to ear, very pleased with my purchase and under budget. I know Jim could have blown my budget totally and even gone over, but Jim tailored my setup to the best bang for buck for the level of archer I am and could afford and explained that there was no need to spend any more than was needed at my present level. I would just like to thank you all and especially Jim for taking the time for his polite and professional friendly manner. I will be recommending Merlin to all of my Archery friends.

Many thanks

Great customer service and very knowledgeable. We have bought quite a few products from Merlin over the past 2 years and everything is always perfect. Really appreciate their expertise and help when I don't know what I'm doing sometimes.

Thanks!

User

Firstly, a big thank you to a guy called Jim at the shop in Loughborough yesterday, he was fab! Went there to purchase my first ever bow and he just nailed everything. Must have spent about 2 and a half hours there, to ensure everything was correct and in good order to use once I'd left the shop. We were made to feel welcome and even offered a cup of tea.

Wide selection of bows to suit all ages and abilities, top quality equipment and just generally an all-round good store. Before leaving, I got given a free bow stringer for being a good customer, which was so lovely! Will definitely be coming here again when I need anything else. Thank you again!

User

Fast delivery! I placed an order on sunday 22nd and received the package today! (26th), from Merlin to sweden in 4 days, which is amazing!

Thank you! :D

User

Bought my first bow from Merlin yesterday. Jim was really helpful (and patient!) and spent a long time going through every item and option to make sure I got the right kit for my budget and (lack of) experience. Huge shop with loads of choice, will definitely go back.

User

Been to Merlin Archery quite a few times but the customer service and expert staff were fantastic today. Dan helped my wife to pick her first traditional bow and also my second bow.

He was a lovely well mannered chap and nothing was too much to ask for.

We both left feeling very happy with our purchases and look forward to our next visit.

As a novice to Archery and having just completed the 6 week beginners course, my club recommended a visit to Merlin Archery. What brilliant advice that was so combined with visiting local relatives, I popped in to set myself up with all the gear. I was met and served by Jim who had the patience of a saint as well as being a font of archery knowledge. I cannot recommend Merlin more highly for their professionalism and customer service including an ample supply of much needed coffee. The visit exceeded all expectations and would certainly advice any novice to visit Loughborough, you would not be disappointed. Well done to all members of Merlin Archery.

User

An incredible shop, awesome staff. So much knowledge in there, nice to see a shop that challenges your thinking and asks why do you need that particular item, rather than just looking for the sale. Think I’ll be shopping here a few more times...

My experience with merlin archery was... hard to describe more than anything, let me preface this review by saying that the guys on the phone and the customer service has been amazing, they are all exceedingly polite and helpful, However from the second of me placing the order it seemed although things could only go downhill. Initially they had their servers crash by no fault of their own but this delayed the delivery/sending date of my order. When it finally came to delivery day i wasn't able to track my parcel or even get an estimated time of delivery for 9 pounds that's a bit of a pisstake but i cancelled a day of work and decided it was worth just waiting in for as the birthday is tomorrow. at about 11am it turns up but only half of the order i then called up to find out what happened to to other half only to be told someone had forgotten it after a while on the phone they told me that a driver would drop it off before the end of the day, seems reasonable its only 11 am and they dont stop delivery till 5:30 pm considering the depots a 20 minute drive away this shouldn't be to hard... after waiting till 5:30 pm i called them again only to be told that the driver couldnt be bothered and so went home without dropping off my order. i was then told that i could either pick it up tomorrow if id like.. obviously not being impressed by the fact id paid 9 pounds for delivery after a short period they agreed they could send it out again on Saturday to which i agreed as i didnt have the time to go and pick it up or take another day away from working. Eventually on saturday the other half of the order turned up but unfortunately a tad late for the birthday of a close friend albeit he was happy that he at least had the bow for 9 pounds this was a bit of a nightmare. Over all it was more of a stressful experience rather than a smooth one. That being said due to the awesome customer service from merlin i would order from them again, and if things go better next time id be more than happy to adjust my review but unfortunately this time they didnt quite deliver.. geddit? Joking puns aside my only real issues

-Delivery price is exceedingly high for what you get, not to mention on orders nearing 400 pounds you might expect free delivery?

-The couriers used by merlin are useless in every sense of the word

User

Not the best service in the world. Waited a 1 1/2 hours to get served which I didn't mind.

I needed the men's room and while I was in there there was a all mighty bang on the door all I can say is that its a good job i had my pants down.

I was met by a short dumpy looking girl who really never gave a flying hoots.

All I wanted was 1 compound bow re strung. 1 compound bow set up. And to trade in a recurve bow I purchased of them 3 years ago only to be told that they supplied me with the wrong arrows.

Some 5 hrs later we pop out for a quick bite to eat while there making some arrows up. Come back arrows are done girls serving some one else. So I wait patiently and then she just disappears.

So I am left with other staff that don't know what's happens ! Or what to charge me for.

6 hrs to get served .... The girl needs the bloody sack.

User

Myself and my sister called in today, shop was practically empty (staff & customers), a few people in the shooting area. After looking at a few items but failing to find what we needed, we managed to track down a member of staff. No greeting or anything, felt like I was bothering her rather than being a customer needing some help, left the shop feeling like I'd had a poor visit with nothing to encourage me to shop here again. I travel right from across the opposite side of Nottingham to visit Merlin Archery, but next time I need equipment, I'll be visiting elsewhere.
